What is an Alter?
What is an Alter?
A place to offer burnt offerings to the Lord (Gen. 8:20).
In this text, the word “Alter” is derived from the Arabic word
“maḏbaḥun” which means “Place of slaughter.”
Slaughter is the act of killing; therefore, if something is being placed on the alter, it must be killed before there’s an offering. If it isn’t killed, it could fight and escape once fire is put to it. It is important to slaughter what you put on the alter before offering it to God, so that there’s no chance that it can escape the place of sacrifice.
2. A place where God speaks and make covenant with his people (Gen. 8:21-22).
a. We cannot hear God properly if we haven’t slaughtered and offered to Him what he has commanded us to slaughter and give to him.
