Nick Saban a head couch in Alabama football college team was asked during a recent interview “how do you set expectation for you team”.
His response was that “I don’t set expectations its just a precursor for disappointment.”
He’s coaching a highly organize sport, where the name of the game is to win. And he said he doesn’t set expectations.
That doesn’t mean he doesn’t plan.
He didn’t say there isn’t a process to achieve a curtain goal.
But he doesn’t expect things to always lean in his favor.
Though he works hard, plans, strategize but the result are going to be what they are going to be.
Sometimes we think our expectation is in God but it’s not, it’s in a curtain out come.
We can say I had an expectation that church was going to be this way.
That if I overcame my addiction this is how I would live and think
That marriage would look like this
Or you meet someone famous person thinking they would be kind or nice and they are rude and standoffish.
I met Torrey Smith at my job I had to chase him down because he didn’t pay for his product. But he was different than I thought he would be.
Faith expects from God what is beyond all expectation.
Andrew Murray
Psalm 62:5 NKJV
5 My soul, wait silently for God alone, For my expectation is from Him.
This is an expectation that isn’t divided this is a expectation that is in God alone.
Mingled expectation produces discouraged faith.
Unmingled expectation produces encouraged faith.
When my expectations are divided my faith becomes unrivaled.
When my faith is divided I become the double minded man unstable in all his ways.
Matthew 6:19 NKJV
19 “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal;
Jesus draws attention to mans prize in this life.
Jesus is saying why would you put all of your emphasis on what may be lost.
He is not saying reject due care for you and you family.
He is not saying don’t run your business profitably.
But it is worldly mindedness to which he is objecting , the concentration on prosperity in this world to the neglect of all else.
Worldly mindedness is spiritual idolatry.
Anything that we exalt above Christ is spiritual idolatry.
I good way to check you heart concerning riches.
Is my heart towards riches transient (temporal or lasting a short time) or is it eternal?
Is there an eternal perspective on why I’m accumulating this wealth.
Is my wealth used to the glory of God
I good way to evaluate your heart concerning riches is are your riches afflicting the poor.
Matthew 6:20 NKJV
20 but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal.
Message: Stockpile treasure in heaven, where it’s safe from moth and rust and burglars.
Matthew 6:21 NKJV
21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
“Storing up treasures on earth is a life bombarded by faulty expectations.”
Single Eye
Matthew 6:22 (NKJV)
22 “The lamp of the body is the eye. If therefore your eye is good, your whole body will be full of light.
KJV The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light.
When the eye is functioning normally, the light it perceives means illumination of benefit to the whole body.
The proper function of the eye brings illumination to the whole body.
Is your eye single (good) or is it evil.
Or is your eye evil because God is good.
The eye I believe is talking about the heart.
How is your heart ? Is my heart fixated on evil things.
Can i rejoice when my brother and sisters are rejoicing .
Or do I get upset when God blesses someone apart from myself.
Matthew 20:15 NKJV
15 Is it not lawful for me to do what I wish with my own things? Or is your eye evil because I am good?’
This psalm is more than likely ascribe to David and the descendants of Korah song it. Korah was one who was swallowed up because of his sin. He tried to lead a rebellion against Moses and Aaron and accused Moses that he had to much authority over the people. He asked him why are you ruling as a prince over us isn’t there many people here who fear God.
Numbers 26,27
But God gave grace to Korah sons they dedicated there lives to praising God through there music .
Though Korah was rebellious against God his descendants received mercy and grace and they dedicated themselves (at least in David’s time) to singing for God.
they became so filled with gratitude that they addicted themselves to sacred music in order that their spared lives might be consecrated to the glory of God.
But Korah had no sons. But he did have daughters. And after Korah’s death they beg God not to cut off his name. And the bore the name of Korah
This was written by the Sons of Korah but Korah had no sons the name was passed down to the daughter.
Psalm 42:1 NKJV
1 As the deer pants for the water brooks, So pants my soul for You, O God.
The deer needs water for its survival so the soul needs God.
David is going through great anxiety at this time. Great persecution.
He maybe even excommunicated from worship.
David is debarred from worship and he is heartsick.
David didn’t seek ease, he didn’t lust after honor, but the enjoyment of communion with God was an urgent need of his soul; he viewed it not merely as the sweetest of all luxuries, but as an absolute necessity.
Do you view communion as a luxury and a absolute necessity.
If we view our relationship with God this way there would be great fulfillment in our lives.
“My soul.” All my nature, my inmost self.
David said he thirst for God, he didn’t say he hungered for God. If you hunger for God maybe you can endure for longer. Hunger can be manageable for a season roughly 40 days. But thirsty is swift. But thirst is awful, insatiable ( its impossible to satisfy thirst)
Nothing else can satisfy that thirst.
Psalm 42:2 NKJV
2 My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When shall I come and appear before God?
He is the living God!
There are three respects especially in which our God is said to be the “living God.”
- First, originally, because he only has life in himself, and of himself, and all creatures have it from him.
- Secondly, operatively, because he is the only giver of life unto man. Our life, in the threefold extent and capacity of it, whether we take it for natural, or spiritual, or eternal, flows to us from God.
- Thirdly, God is said to be the “living God” by way of distinction, and in opposition to all false gods .
Psalm 42:3 NKJV
3 My tears have been my food day and night, While they continually say to me, “Where is your God?”
Psalm 42:4 NKJV
4 When I remember these things, I pour out my soul within me. For I used to go with the multitude; I went with them to the house of God, With the voice of joy and praise, With a multitude that kept a pilgrim feast.
Vs 4 imagine being in the city where everybody is praising God, neighbors and praising God we are praying for you just praising God you have instruments, blaring songs do you have drums you have trumpets everybody is praising God, the whole city people your neighbors come out and everybody is praising. God, celebrating God, saying a holy, holy holy.
I remember a lady at my job I’m so excited. She just beat cancer and she was praising God she was telling me all about the glory of God and then I seen her may be a month later, and it was almost like she forgot about the joy and the excitement she had.
Psalm 42:5 NKJV
5 Why are you cast down, O my soul? And why are you disquieted within me? Hope in God, for I shall yet praise Him For the help of His countenance.
He is speaking to himself as though he is two men.
His faith reasons with his fears, his hope argues with his sorrows.
WE have to speak to our souls because our souls will speak to us.
We speak to our souls with the new heart.
To search out the cause of our sorrow is often the best surgery for grief. Self-ignorance is not bliss; in this case it is misery.
The mist of ignorance magnifies the causes of our alarm
David was a man who under went some of the most traumatic events man can think of . And the remedy was God speaking to his soul.
