INTRODUCTION

Hey everyone! so glad ya’ll were able to make it!
tonight we are going to be continuing our study on the Attributes Of God
Last time we spoke on God’s faithfulness and this week we will be discussing Gods sovereignty
So I wanted to open up the same way I did last time and ask How would you define God’s sovereignty?
What comes to your mind when you Here the word Sovereignty ?
According to the Lexham Theological Wordbook
Lexham Theological Wordbook Divine Sovereignty

Divine Sovereignty

Divine sovereignty refers to God’s all-encompassing rule over the entire universe.

Concept Summary

The divine sovereignty of God is a central theme throughout the Bible. God delegates authority, establishes kings and kingdoms, and brings to ruin any king or kingdom that fail to submit to his authority. The Bible presents Yahweh as the Creator God, with a sovereign right to rule over all creation (Psa 104). Yahweh is the “great king (מֶלֶךְ, melek) over all the earth” (Psa 47:2) who “reigns (מָלַךְ, mālak) over nations” (Psa 47:8). In Genesis 1, as God creates all things, he also delegates authority, such as by making greater and lesser lights to rule (מֶמְשַָׁלָה, memšālâ) night and day and by giving man dominion (רָדָה, rādâ) over creation (Gen 1:16, 18, 26, 28).

Divine sovereignty is viewed both in the OT and NT as God’s all-encompassing rule (מָשַׁל, māšal; Psa 103:19; βασιλεύς, basileus; 1 Tim 6:15). God’s sovereignty is displayed in his divine kingship over Israel. He rules over them (memšālâ; Psa 114:2), but he will also judge all nations (Isa 2:4; Psa 96:13) for rejecting him and worshiping idols (Isa 2:12–22; Rom 1:21–25). Even foreign kings confess the ultimate sovereignty of the God of Israel. In the book of Daniel, both Nebuchadnezzar and Darius proclaim the enduring dominion (שָׁלְטָן, šālṭān) of the God of Israel (Dan 4:2–3; 6:26).

In the NT, God’s sovereignty is revealed through the presence of Christ who ushers in the kingdom (βασιλεία, basileia; Mark 1:15; Matt 4:23; 12:28; Luke 17:21) and exercises his divine authority over all realms of creation.

All of that to say God has complete and total authority over everything.
Matthew 28:18 “And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.”
Nothing is outside of the control of God
We can have complete and total confidence in God
So as we continue I want to look at 3 ways we can see God’s sovereignty and the what that means for our lives.

(Point 1) God is sovereign over, He rules over the GOOD things

in Daniel 4:36 Speaking of King Nebuchadnezzar it says
Daniel 4:36 ESV
At the same time my reason returned to me, and for the glory of my kingdom, my majesty and splendor returned to me. My counselors and my lords sought me, and I was established in my kingdom, and still more greatness was added to me.
in Genesis 41:37-40 it says...
37 This proposal pleased Pharaoh and all his servants. 38 And Pharaoh said to his servants, “Can we find a man like this, in whom is the Spirit of God?” 39 Then Pharaoh said to Joseph, “Since God has shown you all this, there is none so discerning and wise as you are. 40 You shall be over my house, and all my people shall order themselves as you command. Only as regards the throne will I be greater than you.”
Joseph was made to be second in command of all of Egypt and by this he saved the nation of Israel from starvation before it was even a nation.
we also see Gods sovereignty in the life of Job,
Job 1:1–3 ESV
There was a man in the land of Uz whose name was Job, and that man was blameless and upright, one who feared God and turned away from evil. There were born to him seven sons and three daughters. He possessed 7,000 sheep, 3,000 camels, 500 yoke of oxen, and 500 female donkeys, and very many servants, so that this man was the greatest of all the people of the east.
Job was blessed by God and made grate by His sovereign rule.
we will touch more on each of these later.
I want to look at 2 more passages before we move to the next point.
Psalm 103:1–5 ESV
Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless his holy name! Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits, who forgives all your iniquity, who heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from the pit, who crowns you with steadfast love and mercy, who satisfies you with good so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.
And the answer Is GOD
and finally James 1:17
James 1:17 ESV
Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.
ALL Good is from God
God is sovereign over the Nice, Good, and Amazing things that happen every second of our lives.
but God dosent just rule over the good things that happen in our lives He is also ruler, Sovereign over the bad things as well.

(Point 2) God is sovereign over, He rules over the BAD

looking back at king Nebuchadnezzar we see Gods Sovereignty over the bad.

we are going to look at Daniel 4: 28-37 but for context just before this section we read about Daniel interpreting a dream to the king.
in this interaction the King is warned that God will take everything away from the king unless he turns from His sin and Pride and submit and worship God
and now we are a year later when we come to verse 28.
Daniel 4:28–37 (ESV)
All this came upon King Nebuchadnezzar. At the end of twelve months he was walking on the roof of the royal palace of Babylon, and the king answered and said, “Is not this great Babylon, which I have built by my mighty power as a royal residence and for the glory of my majesty?” While the words were still in the king’s mouth, there fell a voice from heaven, “O King Nebuchadnezzar, to you it is spoken: The kingdom has departed from you, and you shall be driven from among men, and your dwelling shall be with the beasts of the field. And you shall be made to eat grass like an ox, and seven periods of time shall pass over you, until you know that the Most High rules the kingdom of men and gives it to whom he will.” Immediately the word was fulfilled against Nebuchadnezzar. He was driven from among men and ate grass like an ox, and his body was wet with the dew of heaven till his hair grew as long as eagles’ feathers, and his nails were like birds’ claws.
At the end of the days I, Nebuchadnezzar, lifted my eyes to heaven, and my reason returned to me, and I blessed the Most High, and praised and honored him who lives forever,
for his dominion is an everlasting dominion,
and his kingdom endures from generation to generation;
all the inhabitants of the earth are accounted as nothing,
and he does according to his will among the host of heaven
and among the inhabitants of the earth;
and none can stay his hand
or say to him, “What have you done?”
At the same time my reason returned to me, and for the glory of my kingdom, my majesty and splendor returned to me. My counselors and my lords sought me, and I was established in my kingdom, and still more greatness was added to me. Now I, Nebuchadnezzar, praise and extol and honor the King of heaven, for all his works are right and his ways are just; and those who walk in pride he is able to humble.
God is Sovereign over the bad that came on the king just as much as the good that he had before, and after the Judgment.

looking back at Joseph:

God was sovereign over the pain and suffering that Joseph went through before and after he became the second in command of Egypt
he was beaten
betrade by his family
sold into slavery
striped of his family, and thrown into a unfamiliar cutler
lied about and thrown into prison
and then forgotten about
And GOD was sovereign over the suffering that he endured. looking at Genesis 50 Joseph talking to his brothers he said...

20 As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good, to bring it about that many people should be kept alive, as they are today

and finaly lets look at Job.
English Standard Version (Chapter 1)
Satan Takes Job’s Property and Children13 Now there was a day when his sons and daughters were eating and drinking wine in their oldest brother’s house, 14 and there came a messenger to Job and said, “The oxen were plowing and the donkeys feeding beside them, 15 and the Sabeans fell upon them and took them and struck down the servants with the edge of the sword, and I alone have escaped to tell you.” 16 While he was yet speaking, there came another and said, “The fire of God fell from heaven and burned up the sheep and the servants and consumed them, and I alone have escaped to tell you.” 17 While he was yet speaking, there came another and said, “The Chaldeans formed three groups and made a raid on the camels and took them and struck down the servants with the edge of the sword, and I alone have escaped to tell you.” 18 While he was yet speaking, there came another and said, “Your sons and daughters were eating and drinking wine in their oldest brother’s house, 19 and behold, a great wind came across the wilderness and struck the four corners of the house, and it fell upon the young people, and they are dead, and I alone have escaped to tell you.”20 Then Job arose and tore his robe and shaved his head and fell on the ground and worshiped. 21 And he said, “Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked shall I return. The LORD gave, and the LORD has taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD.”22 In all this Job did not sin or charge God with wrong.
God was sovereign over even the most Honorable things In Jobs life. and job knew this and responded rightly, latter on he dosent respond perfectly but he is restored to where he was before and then some
So God is sovereign over the good the bad what else?
i wanted to qickly point out one more simple but amazing fact.

Point 3: God is sovereign over, He rules over the BIG AND SMALL THINGS

God is control of the most powerful men
Proverbs 21:1 ESV
The king’s heart is a stream of water in the hand of the Lord; he turns it wherever he will.
He is in controller of nature,
Matthew 8:23–27 ESV
And when he got into the boat, his disciples followed him. And behold, there arose a great storm on the sea, so that the boat was being swamped by the waves; but he was asleep. And they went and woke him, saying, “Save us, Lord; we are perishing.” And he said to them, “Why are you afraid, O you of little faith?” Then he rose and rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm. And the men marveled, saying, “What sort of man is this, that even winds and sea obey him?”
God is sovereign over the little things as well
Matthew 10:29–31 ESV
Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? And not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father. But even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not, therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows.
if God cares for and is sovereign over the lives of animals how much more our own lives?
God cares about the big and small things in your life.
God is in control over the things that to us seems meaningless.
God is sovereign over the marriage or brake-up
God is sovereign over the car accident or the belling of a new car
God is sovereign over the promotion and the unemployment
God is sovereign over the country and our individual.
God is sovereign yesterday, today, and tomorrow.
Matthew 6:34 ESV
“Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.
we don’t fear tomorrow because we know who holds tomorrow.
God is the one who holds the world together by His strength, by His power, by His will
Colossians 1:17 ESV
And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together.
There is no one like Him, there is no one above Him, He is the “I AM” and He is sovereign over the entire universe, including the little things we worry about. or even thing about.

Conclusion: So what dose this mean for us? How should Gods sovereignty change our lives practically?

1. When we are in the storm we know who controls the wind and the waves

2. When we are we don’t know what tomorrow holds we know who holds tomorrow

3. when we are week we can know that He is strong.

4. when we can’t we know that He can

5. When life becomes unbarable, painfull, or even hopeless, we can still reast and know that the God of the universe has a plan and will carry out that plan no matter what.

In romans it says God works all things for good to those who love him.
no matter what he is Good and he is in control and there is peropse in what you are going through and that perpose is Good!
to close us out i want to look at the rest of matthew

18 And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

Becuse God is sovereign we can Go with confidence to share the Gospel.
