Tonight
John 18:15-18 25-27
15 Simon Peter was following Jesus, and so was another disciple. Now that disciple was known to the high priest, and entered with Jesus into the court of the high priest, 16 but Peter was standing at the door outside. So the other disciple, who was known to the high priest, went out and spoke to the doorkeeper, and brought Peter in. 17 Then the slave-girl who kept the door said to Peter, “You are not also one of this man’s disciples, are you?” He said, “I am not.” 18 Now the slaves and the officers were standing there, having made a charcoal fire, for it was cold and they were warming themselves; and Peter was also with them, standing and warming himself.
25 Now Simon Peter was standing and warming himself. So they said to him, “You are not also one of His disciples, are you?” He denied it, and said, “I am not.” 26 One of the slaves of the high priest, being a relative of the one whose ear Peter cut off, said, “Did I not see you in the garden with Him?” 27 Peter then denied it again, and immediately a rooster crowed.
This is the same Peter who encountered and experienced God in some mighty ways before all this
This is the same guy who just a few hours early said this
33 He spoke another parable to them, “The kingdom of heaven is like leaven, which a woman took and hid in three pecks of flour until it was all leavened.” 34 All these things Jesus spoke to the crowds in parables, and He did not speak to them without a parable. 35 This was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet: “I will open My mouth in parables; I will utter things hidden since the foundation of the world.”
Nothing was going to stop Peter from following or claiming Jesus right
And then Peter goes and denies Jesus not just once but 3 times with the same few hours of each other
For most people if you denied them 3 times they would be done with you
But Jesus was no man He was the savior the God of the universe
Peter most likely had so much guilt and shame which only comes from satan that he did not go to the crucifixtion and he did not go and see Jesus be buried
And so much so that he returns to what He knows
Fishing
By this time Jesus has been crucified and has risen
Peter has even seen the empty tomb
But non the less Peter returns to fishing
1 After these things Jesus manifested Himself again to the disciples at the Sea of Tiberias, and He manifested Himself in this way. 2 Simon Peter, and Thomas called Didymus, and Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, and the sons of Zebedee, and two others of His disciples were together. 3 Simon Peter said to them, “I am going fishing.” They said to him, “We will also come with you.” They went out and got into the boat; and that night they caught nothing.
Sounds familiar they had done that at another time as well day 1 of VBS Peter was fishing and didn’t catch anything and he encounters Jesus
4 But when the day was now breaking, Jesus stood on the beach; yet the disciples did not know that it was Jesus. 5 So Jesus said to them, “Children, you do not have any fish, do you?” They answered Him, “No.” 6 And He said to them, “Cast the net on the right-hand side of the boat and you will find a catch.” So they cast, and then they were not able to haul it in because of the great number of fish. 7 Therefore that disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, “It is the Lord.” So when Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put his outer garment on (for he was stripped for work), and threw himself into the sea. 8 But the other disciples came in the little boat, for they were not far from the land, but about one hundred yards away, dragging the net full of fish.
Peter is so excited to see the Lord he jumps right into the water and swims to get to Jesus
9 So when they got out on the land, they saw a charcoal fire already laid and fish placed on it, and bread.
They saw the charcoal fire
We have seen this a few days earlier
18 Now the slaves and the officers were standing there, having made a charcoal fire, for it was cold and they were warming themselves; and Peter was also with them, standing and warming himself.
The last time Peter was at the fire was when he denied Jesus
This time would be different
15 So when they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of John, do you love Me more than these?” He said to Him, “Yes, Lord; You know that I love You.” He said to him, “Tend My lambs.” 16 He said to him again a second time, “Simon, son of John, do you love Me?” He said to Him, “Yes, Lord; You know that I love You.” He said to him, “Shepherd My sheep.” 17 He said to him the third time, “Simon, son of John, do you love Me?” Peter was grieved because He said to him the third time, “Do you love Me?” And he said to Him, “Lord, You know all things; You know that I love You.” Jesus said to him, “Tend My sheep. 18 “Truly, truly, I say to you, when you were younger, you used to gird yourself and walk wherever you wished; but when you grow old, you will stretch out your hands and someone else will gird you, and bring you where you do not wish to go.”
Jesus asks Peter 3 times if he loves Him and 3 times Peter says yes
Where else have we seen this
Jesus is restoring Peter back to where he was essentially canceling the denying 3 times previous
Jesus is a forgiving God but notice what Peter did
He went back to Jesus and see what Jesus does He forgives Him
SKIT
GOSPEL
The only way to get to heaven is through Jesus
6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.
No one gets into heaven without a personal relationship with Jesus
Here is what Jesus did and why it is only Jesus
21 He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.
He made Him
God the father had Jesus
Who knew no sin
Who had never ever sinned
To be sin on our behalf
Jesus who had never sinned took your sin and my sin on as His own as if He Himself had committed them
Jesus was innocent completely and yes took our punishment of sin
So that we might become the righteousness of God Himself
Jesus did all that so that you and I could stand before God and in the righteousness of Christ
Jesus did all that so that we could stand before God innocent of sin
So it is only through a personal relationship with Jesus that you can be saved
You are a sinner that is a fact
You need a savior that is a fact
And in just a few minutes we will ask you if you want to accept that free gift that Jesus have you here tonight.
