Pattern for Parenting

Ephesians 6:4

First part of this passage says, ‘do not provoke your children to anger’. What might this look like?

1) Favoritism

a) Isaac and Rebekah with Esau and Jacob (Gen. 25:28)

b) Joseph (Gen. 37:3, 4)

2) Comparing children with siblings

3) Pushing achievement beyond reasonable bounds

4) Discouragement and negative

5) Parents failing to sacrifice for their children and making them feel like an intrusion

6) Failing to let children grow up

7) Using love as a tool of reward or punishment

8) Physical and verbal abuse

Second part of the passage, ‘but bring them up in the discipline of the Lord.’
