Today we are going to go over the next piece of armor the helmet of salvation, another defensive tool in the Christians toolbox. We have girded our loins with the belt of truth to be ready, and we put on the breastplate of righteousness to protect our hearts, we have shod our feet for readiness with the gospel of peace, and we then have taken up the shield of faith to stop the temptations of the devil. We are piecing our armor together so that we can be ready at all times for the battles that we face against satan and his army. Today we are going to be looking at the helmet of salvation. So, lets dive in and see what God’s word teaches us about the helmet of salvation.
10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. 11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. 12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. 13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm.
14 Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, 15 and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace. 16 In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one;
17 and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God,
We are to “take up the helmet of salvation”, now we need to understand that Paul is talking to believers here so he is not talking about our initial salvation, he speaking here of the security that we have in our salvation. The Roman soldiers wore a helmet to protect them from the large two sided sword that their enemies would use against them. Just as the devil uses his two sided sword of discouragement and doubt against the believer.
15 Though he slay me, I will hope in him; yet I will argue my ways to his face.
Job’s helmet of salvation helped him to deflect the discouragement and doubt of satan. Through all his trials he remained faithful to God. Job exemplifies true saving faith by showing us it is not tied to what benefits and blessings a person has or loses. This goes back to our question from two weeks ago, why are you here, do you come to give or to get. The next few verses we are going to look at show us the security in our relationship with Christ, the security of our salvation.
37 All that the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never cast out.
28 I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand. 29 My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all, and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand.
17 and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God,
There are three aspects to our salvation, Justification, Sanctification, and Glorification. When we accept Christ we are justified, that is the first part of our salvation, once justified the process of sanctification starts and this is the life long pursuit of being more and more Christ like. The final part of our salvation is glorification, this is the final part where we receive our glorified bodies and spend and eternity with our LORD. It is this hope that is in the helmet of salvation. The longing for the day when we have finished the race and have the final and complete restoration.
8 But since we belong to the day, let us be sober, having put on the breastplate of faith and love, and for a helmet the hope of salvation.
Paul here assures the Thessalonians of their hope, the hope in their salvation. Protection from the doubts that satan throws at us.
17 and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God,
How does satan use his two sided sword of discouragement and doubt against us. He tries to discourage us whenever something goes wrong, he tries to discourage us when we hear bad news, he tries to discourage us by saying we are not good enough. He tries to get us to doubt what God has promised to us, to doubt our salvation, to doubt the truth and reliability of God’s word. When we have these discouraging and doubtful thoughts enough they carve new Neurol pathways in our brains, they make ruts in our mind, and in order to fix those we need to think the opposite, we need to trust in God’s word, and reform new Neurol pathways of truth, the truth of God’s word, the truth of our salvation. We need the helmet of salvation to protect us.

Battle Ready Part 6
What application can we learn from this. Once we accept Christ, and have a true salvation experience as Paul tells us there is nothing that can separate us from the Love of Christ. We have a hope to cling to, a hope of an eternity with our Lord and Savior. The reason we have security in our salvation is because it rests in Christ not us. He has already won the war, we are just to be fighting the daily battles to share the gospel with as many people, sharing the love of Christ with the world around us. But we must have a relationship with Christ in order to partake in this future hope.
