Matt 5:29 and Matt 18:9

Matt 5:29. Setting up the scene. In Matt 14 Jesus had just fed 5000 people, and all were gathered around to hear what he had to say. Matt 5:3-12 Jesus starts talking about the behavior of people in the Millennial kingdom

Matt 13-16 Is addressed to believers and is an encouragement to stay positive to the word of God

In matt 17 He starts talking about the Mosaic Law. It is very important because it holds the key to understanding verse 29. He says he has come to fulfill the law. This is important because it shows that no one could fulfill the Law perfectly but Jesus Christ.

Remember Romans 3:20 that through the law comes the knowledge of sin.

Then he shows the impossibility of fulfilling the Law. In Verse 20 He says that unless mans Righteousness is greater than the pharisees then they wouldn't be going to heaven. What was Jesus saying. As Morally great as the pharisees thought they were, Jesus said a persons righteousness has to be greater than there's. (It has to be perfect) The conclusion is that your righteousness has to be like his, PERFECT. He was saying to the people that Your Righteousness has to be better than the Pharisees righteousness (the righteousness they were seeking)

He further goes on to show no one could live by the Law perfect. The Pharisees thought that if you didn't sleep with another woman (other than your wife.) you didn't commit Adultery. Jesus said if you even fantasize about someone other than your spouse you have committed Adultery.

In verse matt 5:21 Jesus said that the pharisees taught you shall not murder, but Jesus taught that the anger behind the murder is just as bad, and if you've had that anger before you have violated the Law

He then goes on to state that Brothers in Christ should take care of their angry feelings between each other before going to offer sacrifices to God. (Remember they were still in the Dispensation of the Law)

Matt 5:29 You will not come to a good interpretation of this verse without using the I.C.E principle. So we have to ask a few questions. 1. Is hell really what Jesus meant? Yes! Gehenna is the Hebrew Gehenna — (derived from the Hebrew word Ge Hinnom; i.e., “the valley of the sons of Hinnom”), a deep, narrow glen to the south of Jerusalem, where the idolatrous Jews offered their children in sacrifice to Molech (2 Chr. 28:3; 33:6; Jer. 7:31; 19:2–6). This valley afterwards became the common receptacle for all the refuse of the city. Here the dead bodies of animals and of criminals, and all kinds of filth, were cast and consumed by fire kept always burning. It thus in process of time became the image of the place of everlasting destruction. In this sense it is used by our Lord in Matt. 5:22, 29, 30; 10:28; 18:9; 23:15, 33; Mark 9:43, 45, 47; Luke 12:5. In these passages, and also in James 3:6, the word is uniformly rendered “hell,” the

So we know that the word Hell was used by Jesus. So we must next figure out what this verse does not mean. Obviously Jesus wasn't literally talking about self mutilation. So he was referring to something else. The Hand,eye reference is used to make the point to the audience that they must remove something. Remove what? Remove the stumbling blocks in their lives. Now lets tackle the hell reference. John 6:37-40, Hebrews 10:14, Rom 3:23

In Verse matt 5:38 Jesus pointed out, however, that while the rights of the innocent were protected by the Law, the righteous need not necessarily claim their rights. A righteous man would be characterized by humility and selflessness. Instead he might go “the extra mile” to maintain peace. When wronged by being struck on a cheek, or sued for his tunic (undergarment; a cloak was the outer garment), or forced to travel with someone a mile, he would not strike back, demand repayment, or refuse to comply. Instead of retaliating he would do the opposite, and would also commit his case to the Lord who will one day set all things in order (cf. Rom. 12:17-21)

Your Strong Faith Matt 15:28, Mark 5:34, Mark 10:52,

Jesus emphasizes trust. Trust in what? In Him!! If the person was a believer Jesus encouraged them to stay faithful If they were beleivers and they were still hesitant to trust him he would lecture them.

Example of witnessing to the disciples Matt 16: 13 Now when Jesus came into the parts of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, saying, Who do men say that the Son of man is? 14And they said, Some say John the Baptist; some, Elijah; and others, Jeremiah, or one of the prophets. matt 16:15 He saith unto them, But who say ye that I am? 16And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ,(Messiah, Anointed one) the Son of the living God.

26For what shall a man be profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and forfeit his life? or what shall a man give in exchange for his life? 27For the Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with his angels; and then shall he render unto every man according to his deeds. Man will be judged either by the deeds of Christ. (because when God see's a believer he sees Christ deeds, Christ's sacrifice. Or for the unbeliever, God see's their own imperfect deeds. So what the advantage if a Man has everything in this world, but doesn't have eternal life?

Matt 18:

matt 18:1-9 Verse 1. The disciples were discussing who would be most important in the kingdom.

matt 18: 3. Jesus said that unless you had “Child like faith” you would not enter the kingdom. (no doubt there were those involved in the conversation who looked at Christ as a teacher, but not savior)

matt 18:7 Jesus said Woe unto the world because of occasions of stumbling. Jesus was referring to Mans condition, and the condition of the World system because of Adams original sin.

Matt 18:8-9 He goes on to point out the impossibility of living a perfect life.

Matt 18:12 He tells his disciples that he has come to save the lost. He gives the example of a hundred sheep. He says that if one of the hundred is lost, and then found. The shepherd rejoices even more finding that one lost sheep, than the ones who were never lost.

So when going through the difficult verses in scripture instead of focusing on the one or two verses that mention HELL. Focus on the verses of the ones about saving the lost sheep.
