Introduction:
It’s been a busy, busy week with preparing for this service and with work and while trying to get everything ready for college. I kept going back and forth on where I wanted to go. Last year I took a day off from school and went to visit TBI’s campus. I just wasn’t for sure if that was where I wanted to go. Later that year I became supper successful in my theatrical lighting design. So that’s what I decided I was going to go to school for. I had my big plan of getting a technical theatre degree and perusing lighting in college. I was even going to go back to my High School directors and help them with their shows. I soon learned there was one major flaw in my plan, that it was my plan and not God’s. I fought God calling me to TBI for a bit. I trusted God with a life changing decision to surrender into ministry but couldn't trust God on a simple college. I have since then said OK God let your will be done in my life I know you are the King of Kings. So now I leave on the 13th for TBI. I had Faith in Jesus but was not applying it. That’s how we as Christians can be towards our Faith. This idea of having Faith but not using it. We can see dating all the way back in the Old Testament of people struggling with this idea of not applying the Faith we have. God used Moses to bring these people who had the Faith in God to even follow Moses to the promise land, lost their Faith when an obstacle occurred and God made them wander 40 years in the desert until that generation died. How many times in our lives when its easy to have Faith we have abundant Faith but the moment there is an obstacle(Snap) you lose the Faith you just had because we don't apply it. Unlike the story we just talked about God wont make you wonder in a desert for 40 years till your death but instead when we lose that Faith we are the ones wondering from God. We shouldn't need to pick and choose when we have faith and when we don’t because God doesn't pick and choose when hes with us and when he’s not because our King is always with his people. That is what the apostles just got done doing they were going town to town preaching the Gospel, preaching the Kingdom of God, and what we are going to see this morning is the human nature and how even tho they were with Jesus physically they are still like us.
-If you able stand with me in the honor of reading Gods word.
Luke 9:10–17 KJV 1900
10 And the apostles, when they were returned, told him all that they had done. And he took them, and went aside privately into a desert place belonging to the city called Bethsaida. 11 And the people, when they knew it, followed him: and he received them, and spake unto them of the kingdom of God, and healed them that had need of healing. 12 And when the day began to wear away, then came the twelve, and said unto him, Send the multitude away, that they may go into the towns and country round about, and lodge, and get victuals: for we are here in a desert place. 13 But he said unto them, Give ye them to eat. And they said, We have no more but five loaves and two fishes; except we should go and buy meat for all this people. 14 For they were about five thousand men. And he said to his disciples, Make them sit down by fifties in a company. 15 And they did so, and made them all sit down. 16 Then he took the five loaves and the two fishes, and looking up to heaven, he blessed them, and brake, and gave to the disciples to set before the multitude. 17 And they did eat, and were all filled: and there was taken up of fragments that remained to them twelve baskets.
-And Gods people said “Amen”
Big Idea: When our Faith is challenged remember Jesus Christ is King. That in times when its hard to have Faith and when the times its easy for us to have Faith that Jesus’ ruling doesn't change, he loves you the same today just as much as he did yesterday and tomorrow.
Transition- What I want us to think about as we read why is this one of the only miracles recorded in all 4 Gospels the only other miracle is Jesus’ Resurrection?
Luke 9:10–11 KJV 1900
10 And the apostles, when they were returned, told him all that they had done. And he took them, and went aside privately into a desert place belonging to the city called Bethsaida. 11 And the people, when they knew it, followed him: and he received them, and spake unto them of the kingdom of God, and healed them that had need of healing.
Background Info:
1.We learned Last Week what the disciples just got back from doing(Luke 9:1)
2. Bethsaida- “House of Fishing”,
Home to 3 disciples Phillip,Andrew,Peter,
Healing of the blind man and walking on water
3. The Bible never tells us if the apostles and Jesus ever had their private conversation, bc they got interrupted by the crowd, I believe we don't know what that private conversation was bc it wasn't supposed to be private, Jesus knew that the crowds would follow and its no coincidence that they just happened to be in the same place as the other miraculous miracles. I say this cause I want y'all to see that Jesus knew already what he was about to do he was already getting everything prepared for this miracle he was about to pull off. Jesus is like that with us today, Jesus already knows every little detail of when we will be abundantly faithful and when we wont apply our Faith. Or when we will trust Jesus for the physical and not the spiritual. But instead we should trust Jesus at all times cause he reigns over all.
Luke 9:11 KJV 1900
11 And the people, when they knew it, followed him: and he received them, and spake unto them of the kingdom of God, and healed them that had need of healing.
1.The first thing to point out is Jesus is doing exactly what his disciples just got back from doing.
2.There’s a phrase in this passage “Kingdom of God”
“Kingdom of God”-Kingdom of the Lord-Kingdom of Heaven
1.Refers primarily to Gods kingly power exercised over creation and people.
2.Jesus does not define the Kingdom of God but describes it only through parables.
3.Jesus’ teachings is the claim that the kingdom had actually arrived
4.Jesus spent all his ministry preaching this idea and as we are about to read a lot didn't follow
5.Jesus on the cross with the words “King of the Jews”- Prove his point when he rose again, when the second miracle recorded in all 4 gospels happened
6.The Kingdom of God is present wherever the king is to be found. Jesus is present by his spirit both in the church and the world.
Transition:Before we get to our first point this morning there is a passage from John and I wanted to share it with you to see how this crowd is acting towards Jesus.
Read John 6:2
John 6:2 KJV 1900
2 And a great multitude followed him, because they saw his miracles which he did on them that were diseased.
Summary: Jesus is having crowds follow him bc of his miracles and not bc they believe.
Point 1- Misapplied Faith
The crowds trusted Jesus for the physical and not the spiritual.
Illustration: For those of you who know me y'all know I love going with friends to go do whatever. (Zoe not wanting to drive bc im a bad driver)
Apply: How many times do we as Christians want God to fix a problem in our lives but we don't want him to fix the main problem, Our Hearts. We pray asking God to take care of a situation we got into but how many times did you pray asking God to help you fix your heart to get away from what caused that problem.
1.Getting pulled over for speeding and pray that you don’t get a ticket.
2.Buy something you don't need then pray asking God to help you financially bc you cant pay your bills
3.(School about to start)pray to God that you wont get in trouble at school but you don't pray asking God take fix your heart away from that sin.
Transition:We are like the crowd we want Jesus to physically change our lives but not spiritually.
Luke 9:12–14 KJV 1900
12 And when the day began to wear away, then came the twelve, and said unto him, Send the multitude away, that they may go into the towns and country round about, and lodge, and get victuals: for we are here in a desert place. 13 But he said unto them, Give ye them to eat. And they said, We have no more but five loaves and two fishes; except we should go and buy meat for all this people. 14 For they were about five thousand men. And he said to his disciples, Make them sit down by fifties in a company.
Breaking it down:
12- The day is getting late everyone is getting ready for dinner and the apostles tell Jesus to make them leave go home and go get something to eat.
13-Jesus tells his 12 feed them(the confusion on their face) the disciples say but there is only 5 loaves and 2 fish do you expect us to go buy them food?
14- Jesus tells the disciples to put them in groups of 50. The Bible says there were 5000 men we don't know how many women and children there were as far as we know there could have been up to 20000 people .
Transition:Even tho the disciples doubted they still trusted Jesus and did as told.
Point 2-Unapplied Faith
The disciples trusted Jesus for the spiritual. The disciples question Jesus but obey and trust.
1. John 6:5-8(Jesus tested Phillip)
John 6:5–8 KJV 1900
5 When Jesus then lifted up his eyes, and saw a great company come unto him, he saith unto Philip, Whence shall we buy bread, that these may eat? 6 And this he said to prove him: for he himself knew what he would do. 7 Philip answered him, Two hundred pennyworth of bread is not sufficient for them, that every one of them may take a little. 8 One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, saith unto him,
2.Jesus knew what he was about to do. He tested his disciples to see if they had the Faith they had when Jesus gave them the power to heal and cast out demons.
3.The same people who Jesus gave the power to heal and cast out demons are now questing Jesus.
Illustration: Story of hurricane Harvey and guy on roof. Latter,Boat,Helecoptor. Dies goes to Heaven ask Jesus why he did save him and Jesus said I tried.
Apply: Folks we can be like that in our lives. How many times have we asked God to show us a sign when we are dealing with something and God says okay here I am. Then a week goes by and something else traumatic happens and you say God give me a sign you are here
1.Trust God of the family he has put together but doubt when there is drama
2.Trust God for starting a bible study with your friends but you worry about what other people think of you.
3.Or in my case you trust God for calling you into ministry but doubt about a college.
Transition: We shouldn't need to pick and choose when we have faith and when we don’t because God doesn't pick and choose when hes with us and when he’s not.
Luke 9:15–17 KJV 1900
15 And they did so, and made them all sit down. 16 Then he took the five loaves and the two fishes, and looking up to heaven, he blessed them, and brake, and gave to the disciples to set before the multitude. 17 And they did eat, and were all filled: and there was taken up of fragments that remained to them twelve baskets.
Summary: The disciples obeyed then Jesus took the 5 loves and 2 fish looked up to God and blessed the food, and broke the food into pieces and gave each disciple a basket to hand out. Everyone ate till they were filled, and there was so much left that all the leftovers was enough to fill each of the 12 baskets for the disciples to have.
Point 3-Prevailing Faith
We should trust Jesus to reign over all
The disciples obeyed Jesus when he told them what to do and when they did Jesus provided.
2.The same Jesus that that fed 5000 men died on the cross for your sins
3.The Kingdom of God is present wherever the king is to be found. Jesus is present by his spirit both in the church and the world.
Apply-Are you trusting Jesus with everything?
1.Do you pray only when something major happens and don't worry about it when nothing is going on
2.Are you giving God part of your life bc you don't want to give it all up
3.Are your priorities in place where Jesus is first?
Transition:Jesus Christ reigns over the big just as much as he reigns over the small.
Conclusion:
As we talked about at the beginning Jesus already has a plan for you. Jesus already knows when we will be with him abundantly and when we will try to deal with something by ourselves. Jesus slowly set up his plan to feed the 5000 he put everything in place for a reason, and hes doing that with your life right now. God has a major plan for you and your life, a plan so big that he has been getting everything ready for you since the day you were born. At camp we learned about Gods voice, so I ask are you listening to it? Are You listening to the Good Shepard’s Voice? Are you like the crowd and only wanting Jesus for the physical? Are you the Christian that doesn't always apply their Faith. Or do you know that Jesus is king and trusting him to reign over all. No matter when our Faith is low no matter when we are doubting...Jesus Christ will still provide. If you are here this morning and you have never trusted Jesus Christ as your savior what are you waiting for? Is Jesus giving you signs but your like the crowed and keep saying just give me one more. Are you the Christian that trust Jesus with the big but worry about the small? But folks its important that we give Jesus all. When our Faith is challenged remember Jesus Christ is King. So I ask again are you listening to Gods voice? Are You hearing the Good Shepard’s Voice? If you need to make a decision today, Are you ready to make that decision? If so won’t you come.
After Invitation: I asked y'all at the beginning why was this passage in all 4 scriptures?
This miraculous provision of food reveals the Lord as the source of life, or "bread of life," John 6:35
John 6:35 KJV 1900
35 And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.
