Welcome to VBS Sunday
This morning the idea is to share with you what the kids learned all last week
It was a good week
It was a long week
It was a hot week
But we had a blast and we learned a lot about Peter and Jesus
The them for this yrs VBS was Twist and Turns
“Following Jesus Changes The Game”
We know that to be true most of you are followers of Jesus and it has truly changed your lives
TWIST and TURNS for the week was focused on this one verse
The Bible verse for VBS was
Psalm 25:4 NASB95
4 Make me know Your ways, O Lord; Teach me Your paths.
What a battle cry for followers of Jesus
Show me your ways God and Help me to follow you
Show me the path I am to take
And God as you show me the path
Teach me to follow you
That was our goal this week to teach that verse to the kids and to help them learn how to follow Jesus
Day 1
The Theme for this day was “Jesus Is Holy”
The scripture used for day 1 is
Luke 5:1–11 NASB95
1 Now it happened that while the crowd was pressing around Him and listening to the word of God, He was standing by the lake of Gennesaret; 2 and He saw two boats lying at the edge of the lake; but the fishermen had gotten out of them and were washing their nets. 3 And He got into one of the boats, which was Simon’s, and asked him to put out a little way from the land. And He sat down and began teaching the people from the boat. 4 When He had finished speaking, He said to Simon, “Put out into the deep water and let down your nets for a catch.” 5 Simon answered and said, “Master, we worked hard all night and caught nothing, but I will do as You say and let down the nets.” 6 When they had done this, they enclosed a great quantity of fish, and their nets began to break; 7 so they signaled to their partners in the other boat for them to come and help them. And they came and filled both of the boats, so that they began to sink. 8 But when Simon Peter saw that, he fell down at Jesus’ feet, saying, “Go away from me Lord, for I am a sinful man!” 9 For amazement had seized him and all his companions because of the catch of fish which they had taken; 10 and so also were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon, “Do not fear, from now on you will be catching men.” 11 When they had brought their boats to land, they left everything and followed Him.
Notice that Peter
The experienced fisherman is telling Jesus
Who He probably doesn’t know personally yet
He has probably heard about Jesus
Jesus begins to use his boat to teach from and then tells him to go out into the deep and to throw your nets on the others side of the boat
Peter complies and they catch so many fish that the boats begin to sink
Already on day 1 we see that encountering Jesus changes everything
In the kindergarten class we say that he caught 1 million fish
The Bible doesn’t in this instance how many fish were caught but it was enough to cause at least one of the 2 boats to begin to sink
But more importantly when Peter encountered or met Jesus it changed everything
1 he caught more fish
2 he left fishing to follow Jesus
Then we get to day 2
Day 2’s theme was “Jesus is Trustworthy”
The scripture used for day 2 is
Matthew 14:22–33 NASB95
22 Immediately He made the disciples get into the boat and go ahead of Him to the other side, while He sent the crowds away. 23 After He had sent the crowds away, He went up on the mountain by Himself to pray; and when it was evening, He was there alone. 24 But the boat was already a long distance from the land, battered by the waves; for the wind was contrary. 25 And in the fourth watch of the night He came to them, walking on the sea. 26 When the disciples saw Him walking on the sea, they were terrified, and said, “It is a ghost!” And they cried out in fear. 27 But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, “Take courage, it is I; do not be afraid.” 28 Peter said to Him, “Lord, if it is You, command me to come to You on the water.” 29 And He said, “Come!” And Peter got out of the boat, and walked on the water and came toward Jesus. 30 But seeing the wind, he became frightened, and beginning to sink, he cried out, “Lord, save me!” 31 Immediately Jesus stretched out His hand and took hold of him, and said to him, “You of little faith, why did you doubt?” 32 When they got into the boat, the wind stopped. 33 And those who were in the boat worshiped Him, saying, “You are certainly God’s Son!”
This is probably one of my most favorite accounts in the Bible
This is not a story that is made up but this is a true account that actually happened
The experienced fishermen and boatmen are struggling to move the boat
As they are going they see what they believe is a ghost
They are starting to get nervous and scared
Then scripture says immediately
Jesus says that it is I do not be afraid
Then Peter says if that is your Lord call me out of the boat
Then Peter actually gets out of the boat and begins to walk on water
How amazing is that
Peter would not have experienced the blessing of God if He had not got out of the boat
Then as Peter walks on the water he gets distracted by whats going on
By the waves and storms
And begins to sink
Jesus then grabs Peter and they get back into the boat
Jesus is trustworthy and cared for Peter
Jesus can be trusted when He calls you and I out of the boat
Then we get to Day 3
This is the exciting day in VBS because it is the day we share the Gospel
The Theme for the day is “Jesus is Forgiving”
The scripture used for this day is
John 21:5–17 NASB95
5 So Jesus said to them, “Children, you do not have any fish, do you?” They answered Him, “No.” 6 And He said to them, “Cast the net on the right-hand side of the boat and you will find a catch.” So they cast, and then they were not able to haul it in because of the great number of fish. 7 Therefore that disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, “It is the Lord.” So when Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put his outer garment on (for he was stripped for work), and threw himself into the sea. 8 But the other disciples came in the little boat, for they were not far from the land, but about one hundred yards away, dragging the net full of fish. 9 So when they got out on the land, they saw a charcoal fire already laid and fish placed on it, and bread. 10 Jesus said to them, “Bring some of the fish which you have now caught.” 11 Simon Peter went up and drew the net to land, full of large fish, a hundred and fifty-three; and although there were so many, the net was not torn. 12 Jesus said to them, “Come and have breakfast.” None of the disciples ventured to question Him, “Who are You?” knowing that it was the Lord. 13 Jesus came and took the bread and gave it to them, and the fish likewise. 14 This is now the third time that Jesus was manifested to the disciples, after He was raised from the dead. 15 So when they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of John, do you love Me more than these?” He said to Him, “Yes, Lord; You know that I love You.” He said to him, “Tend My lambs.” 16 He said to him again a second time, “Simon, son of John, do you love Me?” He said to Him, “Yes, Lord; You know that I love You.” He said to him, “Shepherd My sheep.” 17 He said to him the third time, “Simon, son of John, do you love Me?” Peter was grieved because He said to him the third time, “Do you love Me?” And he said to Him, “Lord, You know all things; You know that I love You.” Jesus said to him, “Tend My sheep.
We saw that Peter who had encountered Jesus and was changed
Had just denied Jesus a few days earlier
The last time we see the charcoal fire Peter is standing around and denying Jesus
This time it would be different
the reason it is different is because of Jesus Himself
Jesus changes everything remember
Peter who had denied Jesus publicly is not standing before Jesus Himself
And Jesus asks him, Peter do you love me
He asks 3 times because earlier he had denied him 3 times
Jesus as the game changer is canceling out the debt of Peter
We shared with the students that they can know Jesus personally and it is only through Jesus that we can get into heaven
And we had our youth share a skit
And then we get to day 4
The theme for Day 4 is “Jesus is Worth Following”
The scripture used for day 4 is
Acts 3:5–9 NASB95
5 And he began to give them his attention, expecting to receive something from them. 6 But Peter said, “I do not possess silver and gold, but what I do have I give to you: In the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene—walk!” 7 And seizing him by the right hand, he raised him up; and immediately his feet and his ankles were strengthened. 8 With a leap he stood upright and began to walk; and he entered the temple with them, walking and leaping and praising God. 9 And all the people saw him walking and praising God;
Acts 4:13–22 NASB95
13 Now as they observed the confidence of Peter and John and understood that they were uneducated and untrained men, they were amazed, and began to recognize them as having been with Jesus. 14 And seeing the man who had been healed standing with them, they had nothing to say in reply. 15 But when they had ordered them to leave the Council, they began to confer with one another, 16 saying, “What shall we do with these men? For the fact that a noteworthy miracle has taken place through them is apparent to all who live in Jerusalem, and we cannot deny it. 17 “But so that it will not spread any further among the people, let us warn them to speak no longer to any man in this name.” 18 And when they had summoned them, they commanded them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus. 19 But Peter and John answered and said to them, “Whether it is right in the sight of God to give heed to you rather than to God, you be the judge; 20 for we cannot stop speaking about what we have seen and heard.” 21 When they had threatened them further, they let them go (finding no basis on which to punish them) on account of the people, because they were all glorifying God for what had happened; 22 for the man was more than forty years old on whom this miracle of healing had been performed.
These men were so are on fire for Jesus that they can’t help but share that with other people
So we asked our class have you told someone about Jesus
We are to be telling others about Jesus
Church we have heard that before here at Maranatha Baptist Fellowship
See God has so changed these’s mens lives that they cannot hep but talk about Jesus
Church the same can be said of us
Jesus has so changed our lives that we cannot help but talk about it
Then we move on to day 5
The last day of VBS
the Theme for day 5 was “Jesus is for Everyone”
Day 5
And the scripture was from Acts 10
Acts 10:1–9 NASB95
1 Now there was a man at Caesarea named Cornelius, a centurion of what was called the Italian cohort, 2 a devout man and one who feared God with all his household, and gave many alms to the Jewish people and prayed to God continually. 3 About the ninth hour of the day he clearly saw in a vision an angel of God who had just come in and said to him, “Cornelius!” 4 And fixing his gaze on him and being much alarmed, he said, “What is it, Lord?” And he said to him, “Your prayers and alms have ascended as a memorial before God. 5 “Now dispatch some men to Joppa and send for a man named Simon, who is also called Peter; 6 he is staying with a tanner named Simon, whose house is by the sea.” 7 When the angel who was speaking to him had left, he summoned two of his servants and a devout soldier of those who were his personal attendants, 8 and after he had explained everything to them, he sent them to Joppa. 9 On the next day, as they were on their way and approaching the city, Peter went up on the housetop about the sixth hour to pray.
And what makes Jesus for everyone
Acts 10:34–36 NASB95
34 Opening his mouth, Peter said: “I most certainly understand now that God is not one to show partiality, 35 but in every nation the man who fears Him and does what is right is welcome to Him. 36 “The word which He sent to the sons of Israel, preaching peace through Jesus Christ (He is Lord of all)—
Peter was called to Cornelius’s house
Cornelius was a Roman
Romans did not get along with the Jews and the Jews did not get along with the Romans
There was some bad blood
What amazing thing though
Jesus was and is for everyone
That is so important for us because we are not jewish
Church it was amazing to see it play out
Jesus is for everyone
And we are to tell people about Jesus because He is for everyone
And what we are to tell everyone about Jesus is that He loves them and forgives them
We are to do all that because we encountered Jesus ourselves
And church that changes everything
As we move into our invitation
We have a skit
SKIT
The only way to get to heaven is through Jesus
John 14:6 NASB95
6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.
No one gets into heaven without a personal relationship with Jesus
Here is what Jesus did and why it is only Jesus
2 Corinthians 5:21 NASB95
21 He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.
He made Him
God the father had Jesus
Who knew no sin
Who had never ever sinned
To be sin on our behalf
Jesus who had never sinned took your sin and my sin on as His own as if He Himself had committed them
Jesus was innocent completely and yes took our punishment of sin
So that we might become the righteousness of God Himself
Jesus did all that so that you and I could stand before God and in the righteousness of Christ
Jesus did all that so that we could stand before God innocent of sin
So it is only through a personal relationship with Jesus that you can be saved
You are a sinner that is a fact
You need a savior that is a fact
If that is you this morning I would invite you to the front to speak to someone
If you are here and already have a personal relationship with Jesus and maybe you are called to join our church
Or maybe you simple need to spend sometime in prayer this morning
The altar is open
