The Almightiness of God is our shield

Romans 8:3 (ESV)
For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do.
two points: God has done it, and the law and the flesh couldn’t do it. But what is “it” exactly?
Paul is building an argument with the book of Romans that is dealing with the main storyline of all of history.
with this as his thesis: Jesus Christ has delivered to us the Righteousness of God through faith in him.
Romans 1:16–17 ESV
For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith, as it is written, “The righteous shall live by faith.”
Righteousness is taking center focus in the book of Romans. What is righteousness?
Righteousness is goodness, uprightness, innocence
Here’s the thing: we don’t have it.
The Law (weakened by the flesh) Never Could Do It
The problem: we have been overrun by sin (Rom 1-3)
Romans 3:10–12 ESV
as it is written: “None is righteous, no, not one; no one understands; no one seeks for God. All have turned aside; together they have become worthless; no one does good, not even one.”
Romans 3:20 ESV
For by works of the law no human being will be justified in his sight, since through the law comes knowledge of sin.
Whats the big deal? Why does righteousness matter? Because the Almighty Creator God of our Universe is righteous and values righteousness; to such an extent that unrighteousness is judged and punished.
God created us to be righteous people, loving one another, loving God, doing what is right.
Instead, we are an unrighteous people, hating one another, hating God by sinning against, and doing what is wrong.
God has even given us the Law to show us what righteousness looks like
No other Gods
no graven images
take the name of the Lord in vain
remember Sabbath
Honor your father and mother
don’t murder
don’t commit adultery
don’t steal
don’t bear false witness
don’t covet
These laws are true reflection of true righteousness. To obey these things perfectly would be to live righteously.
Jesus interprets the ten commandments
Illustrate: I played baseball as a kid, and I was not a very good hitter.
my parents buying me an expensive baseball bat to watch me strike out with it
I had multiple coaches, and I was still a bad hitter
Here’s the point: I could have had the best equipment, the best coaching, but as long as it was Dom holding the bat, it was all for nothing.
God has given us the law, he has given us his word, he has given us preachers, but so long as its you trying to live righteously, its all for nothing.
We are weak, impotent, unable to live righteously by our own power.
But the book of Romans has some good news for you: Although the Law weakened by your flesh couldn’t do it, God has done it
God Has Done It
Romans 8:3–4 ESV
For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do. By sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, he condemned sin in the flesh, in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.
This morning you probably learned about one way that God showed himself to be almighty: through creation.
Tonight I want to talk about another way he showed himself to be almighty: salvation.
God did something only God could do when he redeemed us from our sinfulness.
Go off!
If the almighty God is on our side, who can oppose us? Who can condemn us?
Romans 8:31 ESV
What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?
If you believe in Jesus, if you have experienced redemption through faith in him, what else is there that can condemn you? What is left that can pose any threat to your soul?
If the almighty God that created everything out of nothing by the breath of his mouth has redeemed you and made you righteous in Jesus, who do you have to fear? What accusation can stand against you in God’s court?
You have an enemy that will continue to try, but remember this: the almighty God is your righteousness and your shield against the attacks of the enemy.
Who can stand against you?
But the Scriptures continue:
Romans 8:32 ESV
He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things?
If the almighty God was willing to even give his own Son to redeem you from your sin, do you think there is anything good he will keep back from you? IF he gave you what was most precious, most dear to him, will there be anything that he holds back from you?

The Love of God is our provision
