First John 5. 1-5. Sermon notes. Victory in Jesus.
Hi All great to be back and thanks to Joseph, Marius and Lee for preaching the last Sundays.
As we have been reading, walking, journeying, though the letter of first John, learning from John, what he learned form Jesus, about who Jesus is, and what he taut, and what love really is, he also gives a strong encouragement to live out what we know about Jesus. And if we don’t live it out we might need to look again what we believe about God, we cannot hate our brothers if the love of Christ is in us, the love of God that send Jesus to die, to save, redeem us to God, then how can we turn and hate, if we were loved so much? We were asked to test the spirts, and the teaching, that it is the same that was form the beginning, what Jesus said. In one study it is repeated, right teaching right living and Loving. Obeying Jesus teaching, living it out, and loving others as God has loved us first in Jesus. (Today recap of reborn, love for God and his people, what obeying means = love for God and his people, virtory in Jesus by his works and our faith in him).
(Who Jesus is of first and greatest important’s. (We all believe something)
John reminds us that we need to believe that Jesus is the Christ, - the messiah, the promised one the, everlasting, God, the one all the prophets and the OT was pointing to, that is what gives us new birth in Jesus, as John has said earlier, we are then born of God, we are then God’s children, if we believe in his name, John 1:12
(negative we people that deny that Jesus is Christ is not Gods children, - and are not a new creation in Christ reborn of Him, )
What does that mean practically? Well, what dose it means for us that God is love and that he sent Jesus, so that we could be saved and become adopted in to his family? What does that mean for you?
Well, it would be the most important, it would be our identity, our salvation, our family, our God father, our God that came to save us, from sin, shame, pain guilt, wrath, and defeat Satan. As we take just a few moments, to remind our self,
John would ask do we live that out, do we see some fruit come out in our life that shows this is true in our life? Not, burdensome, but overflow of what we have experienced the love, the grace we have been shown. Does people see: what we have been and are loved by God born of God, and that Jesus is our great savior? In word and deed?
(This is also a moment to give praise to God for working in us by his Holy Spirt, that from when we were saved by Jesus, til now he has been working, in us do you see that?). I hope we all see something, some things. If there is only hate and disgust of other believers well, then John would ask us to go back to the start of the letter an read again, because as he writes,
That whoever loves the father, loves all that have been born of him, - so we are to love one another, as believers, if we don’t there is something wrong in our understating of Jesus, (= you are not a believer, born again but in darkness) going on, John wrote earlier God loved us first - as we love God, we are to love others – and as Jesus said in Matthew, that we should even love our enemies – and he lived that out laying down his life for his enemies. Then if we have been loved by God first, reborn in Christ, now God Child, then we are to love the others. What does that look like in your life to love the people in the fellowship? To love you neighbor, to love even your enemy? (Need inspiration, we can look to Jesus, how did he live, how has God made you how can you bless, pray, give to others not because you have to, but because you have been loved and become a child of God by Jesus and in Jesus). Coming up, new people – events in September, - Intro at AAU, Welcome to Aalborg, Internationals Fair, Zoo day, AIF events – this semester, Prayer, give, worship, encouragement, rebuke, help, seek, - enjoy, sacrifice, suffer, teach, hospitality- use the gifts and abilities that God has given you. (Not because you have to, self-righteousness, but because you get to – love for others and God). What can we pray for? How God would use us this coming Years, semester/days?
How do we know? That we love God. When we love the children of God, that is what John writes in verse: 2 We love the children of God when we love God and obey his commandments, so when we obey that we can know that we love the people of God, (out of love and Joy) - At the conference in Colorado Springs, there was one sentence that really stuck out to me, and that was obedience is success. Why? Well because in our time and world, there is so many diffente ways that some will measure success, but in the eyes of the Lord, it is obedience, out of a deep understanding of who God is, that Jesus is Christ, (Gospel again). That is why John keeps pointing to Jesus, to make the readers/ understand who God is, and that without understating Jesus, no one can understand who God is. And they and we will not be changed, to love one another and we will not gladly obey God’s commands. Love the lord your God with all you mind heart and strength and your neighbor as yourself. If we don’t understand Jesus is the Christ, we will not do this. If we say and confess, we do, does it come out in our life as fruit? That the Holy Spirt is bringing out? Can we see that, and praise God? Do we pray for better understanding and love for Jesus, God, the Holy Spirt, love for us that we might live it out and enjoy and with joy obey Gods commands? And join Jesus in taking up his burden.
What is the great joy in this? That we love God and obey his commands?
The great victory, that our faith in Jesus as the Christ, that is what gives us victory, that Jesus won, that we have won and we overcome the world, how by the faith we have in Jesus, as Christ, and as the son of God.
Great victory in Jesus, overcoming the world, often we might think the world is overcoming us, but John writes that it is the other way around. By faith in Jesus as the son of God, we overcome the world by that faith. Based in who God is, and how he has shown us that in Jesus.
What about you? How do you live out that Jesus has won, and you have faith that will make you overcome the world, would it not give us great joy and hope to see one another live this out? Praying and helping make that possible… lets us keep doing that, - If you are not there why not come join us, put your hope and faith in the Lord Jesus, Christ, savor redeemer, - he showed us who God is. Let us live out this faith in the joy of obedience in loving God, all s, p, and our neighbor as out self.
Objections /cautions:
Free from works righteousness - embrace what John writes about Jesus, his work, his life, - will lead to fruit, that we are born again, and that our faith, in Jesus as son of God and Messhia, Christ, is what overcomes the world. Not our striving, and self rightiouss deeds, - no, embracing Gods love, by faith in Jesus as Christ.
Well, then I can do what ever I want, no, that is what John is writing that, if we are born of God, we will love God and his commandments and do them, no to be saved and righteous, but instead because we are, - the same goes here listen to John teaching about Jesus, the teaching that Jesus gave him… enjoy, embrace, Jesus as Lord, Christ, savior, redeemer, vitor, father, and let the Holy Spirt work in you, and let the old fade, and fall away, repent follow Jesus, - join him in life, walk with him, by his power.
Lord help us know, use the power in us your power by the Holy Spirt, - amen.
