Bless the Lord
o my soul
It is the key call to action of this Psalm
as the result of remembering Who He is and What He has done
lets just soak in that right now
verses 1-2
1 Bless the Lord, O my soul; And all that is within me, bless His holy name! 2 Bless the Lord, O my soul, And forget not all His benefits:
Bless the Lord o my soul
he starts with it and then ends with it
in Psalm 103:22
Psalm 103:22 (NKJV)
22 Bless the Lord, all His works, In all places of His dominion. Bless the Lord, O my soul!
what does it mean to bless the Lord o my soul
the Hebrew word for bless
its a form of praise
sometimes used to mean to kneel down
the word has a pretty wide range
used over 300 times in the NKJV
when you look at how the word is used
it has to do with speaking well of,
or doing good to someone
so that helps me
in better understanding what it means to bless -
its to do well towards,
or to speaks well of.
so here we have
bless the Lord oh my soul
I kinda love Davids command to his own soul
maybe for us we better understand it as our heart
but its an examination of looking within
and saying bless God ...myself
It may not be a bad practice
to just tell yourself
bless God
we in our default
naturally to not
but how do we bless God?
for all He has done for us?
for all that He is?
What could I possibly do?
even as this chapter says in verse 14
we are dust
or in verse 15
our days are like grass
How can we bless God?
what could we possibly do to bless God?
where do we start?
Well David shows us
Look again at what David says in verse 2
“forget not all his benefits”
not some…
may we we remember it all
so then what David does is give us a full chapter
of all his benefits
he talks all about God in this chapter
this chapter is clearly all about God
mentions Him over 40 times
it talks about
who He is, what He is has, what He will do.
Showing us one way to bless God is to remember
remember who He is and what He has done
how quickly though can we forget
how easily we can take for granted the things God has done
now we will look at what David has listed out first
but I want you to think of what your
Psalm 103 chapter would look like
What do you remember God has done in your life
What is God doing in your life
What will God be doing in your life?
As Megan comes up to lead in bless the Lord”
Today we will start by looking at the list David
gives in verses 3-19
as it gives us an example...
we can share in these points David gives
and bless and worship God together
then I want to encourage you to write or think up
your Psalm 103…
as you tell yourself bless the Lord
oh my soul.
what in your life would follow
“forget not His benefits”
but lets start with
a command to our own selves
to bless the Lord
with a song
Megan sings bless the Lord
....
Lets look at the list that David gives
as it
it talks about who He is
His attributes
His actions
What He has done
What He is doing
What He will do
as we read this list
maybe highlight, circle
do something to help
emphasizes a part in this list you really relate with.
Read verses 3-19
3 Who forgives all your iniquities, Who heals all your diseases, 4 Who redeems your life from destruction, Who crowns you with lovingkindness and tender mercies, 5 Who satisfies your mouth with good things, So that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s. 6 The Lord executes righteousness And justice for all who are oppressed. 7 He made known His ways to Moses, His acts to the children of Israel. 8 The Lord is merciful and gracious, Slow to anger, and abounding in mercy. 9 He will not always strive with us, Nor will He keep His anger forever. 10 He has not dealt with us according to our sins, Nor punished us according to our iniquities. 11 For as the heavens are high above the earth, So great is His mercy toward those who fear Him; 12 As far as the east is from the west, So far has He removed our transgressions from us. 13 As a father pities his children, So the Lord pities those who fear Him. 14 For He knows our frame; He remembers that we are dust. 15 As for man, his days are like grass; As a flower of the field, so he flourishes. 16 For the wind passes over it, and it is gone, And its place remembers it no more. 17 But the mercy of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting On those who fear Him, And His righteousness to children’s children, 18 To such as keep His covenant, And to those who remember His commandments to do them. 19 The Lord has established His throne in heaven, And His kingdom rules over all.
there is just so much here.
we do not have close the time to discuss it all
and to do any of it justice
there is iconic verses here like
as far as the east is from the west
so far He removed our transgressions from us.
and His mercy is from everlasting to everlasting.
While we are just dust
with iniquities, sins, and transgressions
over and over this Psalm reminds us of his mercy
its a clear point David is focused on
it is said 5 times
but also
we get similar words here like
forgives, redeems, gracious, and removed
what an important remembrance
for us to focus on
...
also in this Psalm we see that
That while we are just dust like grass He is so good to us
He heals diseases
crowns with lovingkindness
he satisfies our mouth with good things
He executes righteousness and justice for the oppressed
He is slow to anger
He like a father, pities us
that word “pity” also means to have compassion
and also to love on /show love
but the greatest point
clearly emphasized
is His mercy
The God I have sinned against
even though I am like nothing
He shows mercy.
He removes my sin.
He is incredibly good to us
For all He has done for us
but especially in showing us
great mercy
what else can we do
but bless Him?
Megan does 3 songs.
now lets think of what
our Psalms 103 would look like
no doubt we can take from this Psalm
but maybe you want to get specific
you want to think of your testimony
think of His faithfulness through your life
think of ways He has been there for you
think of what you know He will do for you?
Consider how He has been a Heavenly Father to you
Megan does 3 songs
the Psalm ends with similar like it began
with a call to bless God
lets read it
20 Bless the Lord, you His angels, Who excel in strength, who do His word, Heeding the voice of His word. 21 Bless the Lord, all you His hosts, You ministers of His, who do His pleasure. 22 Bless the Lord, all His works, In all places of His dominion. Bless the Lord, O my soul!
I just loved this reaction of David
In the beginning of the chapter
it was just himself
“bless the Lord oh my soul”
then when He thinks of all He has done,
all He has been
He goes off
Angels, bless Him
you Hosts bless Him
all His works bless Him!
He sees that God is worthy
of more then blessing from Himself!
and he goes from inward
to outward
commanding the blessing to be given to God
then finally again
back at himself bless the Lord oh my soul
as Megan closes us out
and as we have forgotten not His benefits
lets close with blessing Him tonight
together.
