Jesus meets the woman at the well.
v.7 - 10. Give me a drink
why are you talking to me?
If you knew what I could offer you, you would be the one asking me for water.
C. S. Lewis “I have found within myself a desire that nothing in this world can satisfy. Therefore I know that I was made for another world.”
Have you ever stopped to listen to your own heart? You were in your home, but not at home. When you were in the midst of your friends, but still felt alone. When you had finally achieved the goal that you had been striving and longing for, but the victory was empty. So you move on to the next thing.
Augustine identified this ache that we all have within us. He said, “We were made for yourself, oh God, and our hearts are restless, until they find their rest in you.”
And so Jesus sees this woman. She had isolated herself; coming for water at mid- day. This weekend, some of you helped me move into my new house. 85 degrees outside, and cloud cover, but it was still hot enough. We were all exhausted by the end of it all; especially Jerry. This woman had walked all the way out to the well, in the heat of the day, in bright-sunny Israel. Why
Jesus feels the compulsion of the Holy Spirit to go through Samaria. He doesn’t know why, but he knows he must go.
He arrives at a well, exhausted from the journey, he sets himself down and waits. Over the horizon of the nearby hill, he sees a Samaritan woman approaching. In that moment, he sees, and he knows.
The woman approaches the well, and is startled as the Jewish man speaks to her. “Would you give me a drink?” What kind of crazy dude is this? It’s already inappropriate for Jewish men to talk to Jewish women. But for a Jewish man to talk to a Samaritan woman......... She’s on her guard.
