First John 1. 5: 4-12 Testimony of life.
When we listen to someone or in our day something TV/Internet/ News/X ect. someone is talking about some subject, it could be anything, they bear witness about something. What will make us trust it, or reject it? Do we trust the person? Can we trust they know what they are talking about? Where do they have their knowledge from? (Are they selling something, are they after their own gain?). It is truth?
John is bearing witness about how our 3-1 God bears wittiness about himself. To point the people to the only way to true life, eternal life in Jesus Christ.
Jesus Christ came by water and blood, not only water by also blood. What is John talking about, this is a confusing text or has been, if we look back at Jesus life, he comes by water as he is baptized by john the Baptist, - okay, then what about the blood, - yes, the blood, that he spiled as he died on the cross, to save people from there sin. But there is more, what is that, well the Holy Spirt is the one that testifies, about Jesus baptizem and his death, and resurrection, Why John wires that it is because the Spirt is the truth.
(I was in my study, amazed, John writes that the Spirt is the truth, but he also heard Jesus say that he is the way the truth and the life, - then John here is also indicating the relationship of the 3-1 as they have some of the same attributes, they are 3 but one God) John ask if we are willing to listen to people, how much more should we listen to God. Because God is greater, that people, all knowing, all powerful, always speaks the truth, = is truth, not out for shameful gain, but the to give life in his son Jesus. Then God is and has always been the most trustworthy witness, God the father testifies about Jesus at his baptizem, that this is my beloved son, in whom I am well pleased. Matthew 3:17.
John keeps going, with a great statement, that took me some time to understand, verse 10 whoever believes in the son of God, has the testimony in himself. What do you mean John, that if we believe in Jesus, as Christ our savior, we also have the internal witness of the Holy Spirt, given to us to let us know that Jesus is the Christ, therefore we know that God is truth.
But if we don’t believe in God’s testimony about Jesus, we, say God is a liar, because we reject Gods witness about his son. We become God judged, and by rejecting God, we reject Jesus. And reject eternal life in and with Jesus.
Life or no life. John restates what He wrote before in the letter that what God is giving us in Jesus is eternal life in Jesus his son. And that if we have the internal witness in us, we have eternal life in Jesus, the son of God.
But if we or people don’t we don’t have eternal life, because it is only found in Gods son, there is the only true life found. Many and it could be us sometimes, find life hard, frustrating, just getting by is the goal, but eternal life in Jesus Christ, (that starts as conversion to Jesus), a life of loving God, loving God’s commandments, a life overcoming the world not being overcome by it, living by the power of the Holy Spirt, an no one can stop the work God is doing in you, and true you in this world, a life of abundance of purpose, a life of with abundance of love, a life of abounded of worship there is no limit to the true life in Jesus God son. Why then live life’s where we just get by? Do we forget the power of God is in us, all the power to do all that God has for us to do… We are not just to survive, but to thrive in Christ. For his praise and to the glory of God, and for our good.
Then I get all I want if I follow Jesus… NO… You don’t you get al that God what’s for you… And that is much better, why then live a life that is on life at all, - run to Jesus for eternal life… This is also a reminder to us all to praise and worship God for who God is and how much God as done for us, in sending Jesus, and the Holy Spirt, to witness about God, and even creation, bear witness about God.
John is encouraging his readers to listen, and repent come to Jesus for eternal life, and for the other to encourage them to keep worshiping God, and loving God and others, and that power and truth is found in the Holy Spirt that is an eternal witness about all God has done in Jesus Christ his son.
How to respond?
Repent, where there needs to be repentance, I don’t trust you God, I live my own life, in my own strength, I am afraid of the world, and other sinners, and Muslims, and terrorist, what will happen to my children, I might die, I live for my own comfort, I live to control my life, I am God, not you God… That is no life, that is a prison, that is not eternal life in Christ Jesus. But if you have the witness of God in you the Holy Spirt, you also have the power in you to lay all that down, and instead of following yourself, trust in the Spirt of truth, trust in the one that said he is the way the truth and the life. Some of you for the first time… Others of you this is a daily battel, who will win the Spirt of truth or the spirt of your old self? What is the goal? Fully used for God? Or… like 3 – 5 %?
The invitation and call to Worship, God for all that God has done for who Jesus is to live by the power of the Spirt that is in us that have trusted in Jesus. …
God has the best for us and shows us in Jesus, reminds us in The Holy Spirt, and we are asked to live it out and share that eternal life is found in Jesus Christ… (Loving others. Live the life out).
