Jacob’s story is a better match for complex

Pose a question that your audience wants answered.
(In your introduction: What can I do to get my audience to want to know the answer to that question?)
Create a tension they need resolved.
(In your introduction: What can I do to make my audience feel that tension?)
Point to a mystery they have been unable to solve.
(In your introduction: What can I do to make my audience want a solution?)

Think about these different ideas of blessing
I’m too blessed to be stressed?
Or May His favor be upon you and a thousand generations and your family and your children and their children and their children.

So what does it mean to be TRULY blessed?
Why I started holding my hands open when I pastor blessed the people at the end of a service
I don’t want to pass up an opportunity to receive the blessing of an Almighty God
May the blessing of God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit…
Or Blessing from Numbers
Maybe you feel too blessed to be stressed and I mean this with no sarcasm at all… I really am thrilled for you. What a wonderful place to be!
But if you don’t always feel too blessed to be stressed…
There is NOTHING wrong with you!
Because the idea is blessing is much deeper and far richer than just keeping you from stress.
NT idea around someone’s misfortune. Who sinned?

Psalm 115:14 NIV
14 May the Lord cause you to flourish, both you and your children.

Numbers 6:22–27 NIV
22 The Lord said to Moses, 23 “Tell Aaron and his sons, ‘This is how you are to bless the Israelites. Say to them: 24 “ ‘ “The Lord bless you and keep you; 25 the Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you; 26 the Lord turn his face toward you and give you peace.” ’ 27 “So they will put my name on the Israelites, and I will bless them.”
The lyrics are primarily taken from two passages of Scripture: the priestly blessing of Aaron in Numbers 6:22-27, where He declares blessings of God over the people in the name of the Lord, and the blessings for God's people written in the Mosaic Covenant (Deuteronomy 28:6, Exodus 33:14).
May His favor be upon you
And a thousand generations
And your family and your children
And their children, and their children
Elevation Worship’s blessing inspired by Exodus 20:6, Deuteronomy 7:9, and Psalm 103:17-18.

You CAN be blessed and stressed at the same time.
beatitudes
YES it’s possible to be blessed and stressed at the same time, BUT one way to GUARANTEE your stressed is to strive to ensure your own blessing. Always be striving to “get yours.”
This is Jacob pre-wrestling.
If you want to be blessed, follow as close as possible to the One who can offer God’s blessing… and that is not always stress free
DON’T seek to be too blessed to be stressed… just seek to be blessed.
Stress-free anything just isn’t possible… so your best bet- stress or no stress- is just simply God’s blessing.
Why should we quit saying this? What unintentional false truth are we communicating?
If you have stress then you must not be __________________
Yes Jacob stole a blessing… but it wasn’t God’s blessing.
Wrestling match… this ain’t your daddy’s blessing Jacob.
We don’t know who “the man” is, but we DO know he is a carrier of God’s blessing
Pre-wrestling match- rumble :)
-Jacob is a deceiver, ruthless, conniving, ambitious, anything to get ahead
Post
he is blessed and he is injured
=/ too blessed to be stressed
Paul’s thorn
This is why you are not too blessed to be stressed… Jacob was stressed (injured) while he was being blessed.
Theme of the wounded way of redemption 52 in 1st cent Bible river crossing stories
Do you know these people? Always striving… always trying to get ahead. Always on the next scheme to get rich… reading the latest book about achieving their best life?
But for some reason this thing that they are striving SO HARD for… is always out of reach.
They want to get rich… but are they wealthy?
They want their best life… but are they living at the top of their game with no worries?
This is Jacob… he strives, he schemes, sometimes he gets ahead… but then he’s looking over his shoulder and his family is a mess, etc etc etc
A REAL blessing happens when we start DOING THINGS GOD’S WAY
Blessings are really the good things that God has for us when we are living His way.
Some of the most holy people I know certainly knew stress in their lives
Mother Teresa
Billy Graham???
CS Lewis
Oh and Jesus
Here’s why too blessed to be stressed doesn’t work… life is more complex than this. God is more complex than this.
It is possible that good things CAN happen to people who are outside of God’s will.
And it IS possible that bad things CAN happen to people who are inside of God’s will.
Let me say it a different way… the “good” things that happen to people aren’t always God’s blessings. They may just be things that happen to someone.
The “bad” things that happen to people aren’t always God’s judgment. They may just be things that happen to someone.
Bad things post wrestling for Jacob… we KNOW that Jacob IS blessed. We read the story. We had front row seats to the fight!
manufactured blessing
Blessing— the goodness that comes from God when we are within His will.
Now there might be a little overlap here, but these things are not identical.
It’s kind of like how you can have a job that you can’t stand and still making a lot of money. Do you have material goods, yes… do you feel blessed, probably not.
