As we close this series on the Fear of the Lord I have to touch on the 5 points of obedience. Obeying God is one of the pillars to fearing Him as we only obey those we respect. We see this in our children, in our work place, and in our marriages. Most of these 5 steps of obedience, if we are honest, we desire from other people who are placed under our charge.
28 But he said, “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and keep it!”
If you have been a Christians any length of time you have probably heard this verse several times throughout your journey. We are blessed when we are obedient. We spent several weeks showing the blessings and the crowns that come from being obedient.
Obey Immediately
23 So if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you,
24 leave your gift there before the altar and go. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift.
60 I hasten and do not delay to keep your commandments.
The Psalmist found it prudent to do what God had commanded quickly.
There are several instances where what isn’t sin becomes sinful when it takes presidence over what God has commanded us to do.
16 But he said to him, “A man once gave a great banquet and invited many.
17 And at the time for the banquet he sent his servant to say to those who had been invited, ‘Come, for everything is now ready.’
But every one of those invited had an excuse. One wanted to check land, another bury his father, and another be with the wife he just married. All in themselves not sinful, but when put ahead of God they become sin so God. said
24 For I tell you, none of those men who were invited shall taste my banquet.’ ”
2. Obey God when you don’t understand
5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding.
6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.
We don’t always understand what God is doing or why he is doing it. We don’t always have the reasoning behind the command, but the why isn’t always necessary for us to carry out our calling. There are always questions we cannot answer. Why someone had to die. Why we had to lose or fail. Why things don’t always work out, but sometimes this side of heaven we will never know the reason and we need to be ok with that.
3. Obey when it’s not beneficial
Esther is a great example of this: People in high places wanted to kill the Jews. They didin’t know their queen was a Jew. Mordecia, who was Esther’s cousin found out that the Jews were in danger. He went to Ruth and told Ruth to go to the king and plea for the Jews. Ruth knew, that because she wasn’t summond to the kings throne room she could die if she just showed up. But she went anyway. There wasn’t a known benefit.
In Esther chapter 4 she said if I die I die.
4. Obey when it’s Painful
8 And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.
We know that Jesus sought for a different way
39 And going a little farther he fell on his face and prayed, saying, “My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will.”
but in the end said God’s will not His.
5. Obey until it’s Completed
6 And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.
Some deeds will be completed this side of heaven. Some deeds won’t be completed until we get to Heaven. But the command is the same. Obey God until the work is finished.
Almost done isn’t completed.
