Living Water

Living WaterJohn 4:10  Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water. 11 The woman saith unto him, Sir, thou hast nothing to draw with, and the well is deep: from whence then hast thou that living water?

” To begin with brothers and sisters, God test and try us in way that seem so unorthodox, unsettling, seemingly inappropriately and insensitive. This is my first sermon after recovering from Covid in 2023. I honestly thought Covid was behind us and It makes you feel sick as a dog. You’re miserable, and there is no comfort. Oh but God gave me a peace and a calm and a tranquilly in the midst of a terrible ordeal.

“There wasn’t no faking it until you make it process.” God let me have peace when I was feeling sick as a dog. Well anyway the text says that Jesus

Jesus spoke prophetic, profound and prolific words to the Samaritan woman at Jacob’s well. Let’s dive deep down into the delivering word and dig out got golden nuggets to this interesting story

The bible says in John 4:1 that when Jesus heard that the Pharisees knew that He had more disciples and that He had more baptized believers than John, It up set them.

And they sought to do Jesus harm so Jesus left Judea and started out towards Galilee.

And verse 4 tells us that Jesus is now intentional in His missionary ministry. Because the bible says Jesus says I must needs go though Samaria. Listen brothers and sisters this wasn’t the only way to get to Galilee, there was another route that Jesus could have taken

1. Jesus could have gone along the coast,

2. Jesus could have gone across the Jordan and up through Perea, or

3. or Jesus could go straight through Samaria. And the bible says that’s what Jesus did. Because He said in verse 4 I must need go through Samaria . In other words I need to go through Samaria. I must go through Samaria. I shall go through Samaria, so His mission ministry is intentional.

And the bible says that it’s about 12 o clock noon when he sends the disciples into the city called Sychar to buy food.

And here Jesus is at Jacob’s well at 12 o clock and It’s hot!!!

And verse 7 says a woman from Samaria comes to the well to draw water. Yes indeed!!! Wait nah at 12 o clock noon. And no other woman her age or even older are with her. She’s not there with a bunch of her children, nothing! noda nope Nobody ! She is just by herself ! yes indeed. And get this no respectable Jewish woman would be at that well by herself. and certainly not at 12 o clock noon.

And Jesus looks pass by all of though apparent dynamics and ask her for a drink of water. The conversation probably went something like this “Sister Samaritan Give me to drink. “And the Sister Samaritan said How you a Jew ask me a Samaritan to get you some water.”That phrase can be translated “ask no favors from the Samaritans” or “use no vessels in common with the Samaritans.” In others words“Why would Jesus, a Jew, want to use her “polluted” vessel to get a drink of water from”? Yes Indeed

Wait 3x I’m going to put it in your lap where you can get it, During segregation black and whites were separated Right? Well this bible story would be just like a white man asking a black woman at the well for a drink of water from the colored foundation.Yes Indeed!!! Sister Samaritan said “You know that the Jews have no dealings with the Samaritan!!! Then in John 4:10 Jesus said Listen Sister Samaritan, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water.

Now the conversation shifts from the general to the particular and from the material world to the spiritual world.

In general anybody that’s hot at 12 o clock noon would want a cool drink of water right? Yea 3x But then when Jesus asked a Samaritan woman for water it was a particular act of recognition, a request for restoration and a resolve for regeneration.

Then in theological seminary circles the material world would suggest that the social needs of mankind are often dealt with from the material side of things such as what you eat what you wear where you live and how much money you have etc, but also we are beginning to see that in modern society, that mental illness is a real thing in the material world. it’s got some people out there with some real problems some real issues and that many of these things ought to be addressed the spiritual world.

Because if our spiritual intuitive selves were aligned with the Spirit of the Living God we can ask for what we will and God will grant it according to His sovereign will. And many of us will have a whole lot less problems occurring in our lives and in this world.

Jesus is teaching, talking, and telling The Samaritan Woman Living Water. Living Water 3x Everybody say Living Water. Living Water in the Greek vernacular is a compound word meaning two words. Ak-ree-bo-o Which means something special that you would enquire about diligently something you ascertain with great anticipation.

And so what is this Ak-ree-bo-o What is so alive that you and I should diligently aspire to get? I’m glad you asked It’s Water. Water? Yeah Water because Water in the Greek verncaular is the word Hydor “Hoo Door” we know that water in it’s purest form is the life living giving source for all human and animal life on the planet.

But Jesus takes Hoo Door a step further. Jesus declares that when you put Akreeboo together with Hydor it becomes Living Water but not just for life on earth, but for Eternal Life with God. Teach me Pastor. Living Water is for Eternal Life!!! That right there 3x

That’s one of the primary basis of Christian Salvation, Living Water.

Sister Samaritan said Mr Jesus the well is deep and you don’t have nothing to draw the water with. How are you going to get to the deepest waters in Jacob’s Well? And then Mr Jesus are you trying to tell me that you’re greater than our father Jacob. Because everybody know that this whole land was promised to Abraham Isaac and Jacob so are you trying to say that you bigger than Jacob.

It’s a theology question, it’s a doctrinal question because theology is our personal belief in God while doctrine is not only what you believe but what you practice in your personal belief system.

And so Jesus said Sister Samaritan I’ll address your concerns this way Look at verse.

13 Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, 14 but whoever drinks the water I give will never be thirsty. The water I give will become a spring of water gushing up inside that person, giving eternal life.”

Jesus gives her the theological answer to what she was really asking. Meaning In Christ Jesus we have Eternal Life. Because the bible speaks to us and teaches us that there is no other name under the heavens whereby men must be saved except the name of Jesus.

And so Sister Samaritan said“Sir, give me this water so I will never be thirsty again and will not have to come back here to get more water. She literally thought that Salvation was in a bottle of water. Our Salvation is not in a bottle of the spring waters from Jerusalem or the anointed oil that the charlatan preachers try to sell on TV. Salvation is a Repentance and a Regenerative Sanctifying moment whereby Christ secretly saves us and seals our fate until the day of Redemption. Teach Me Pastor.

And now that Jesus has her undivided attention, He says Go Get your Husband and come back here. O oh! Houston we have a problem because the woman knows she doesn’t have a husband. In fact that’s why she’s at the Jacob’s well at that time of the day all alone. None of the other women want her around. Ain’t no woman in the world want another woman around who known to be a home wrecker.

And the thing I like about Sister Samaritan is that she doesn’t lie.

She says Mr. Jesus I ain’t got no husband. Jesus said yeah I know, because you’ve had 5 husbands before and the man you with now is not your husband. In other words you done had 6 men. Sister Samaritan said Sir I can see that you are a prophet. I can see that you’re a man of God. and our ancestors worshiped on this Mt Gerizim because this is where they recited the blessings of the Lord .

Sister Samaritan said but Mr Jesus you’re saying that this mountain isn’t good enough but Jerusalem is the anointed place to where men ought to worship. She said let me get this straight

Sister Samaritan is expressive because she proved that she knew the doctrine of the Hebrew Faith. She knew word. She have been taught the word of God.

Look at John 4:21  Jesus saith unto her, Woman, believe me, the hour cometh, when ye shall neither in this mountain, nor yet at Jerusalem, worship the Father. 22 Ye worship ye know not what: we know what we worship: for salvation is of the Jews.

23 But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him. 24 God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.

When Jesus finished this last discourse of theology this last discourse of biblical truth and after this last statement of appeal, Sister Samaritan said “I know that the Messiah is coming to us and He is called the Christ”. Brothers and sisters He is Christology; He is the Deity of Christ; He is the Divinity of Christ; He is the Lord; He is the Messiah; He is the Messianic-King of Kings and Lord of Lords… And Sister Samaritan said “He will tell us what we ought to do”.

Then the bible says Jesus spoke up very plainly and said in verse 26 Then Jesus said, “I am he—I, the one talking to you.” in the KJV in verse 26 Jesus saith unto her, I that speak unto thee am he.

This is the paramount, pinnacle ,purpose that’s being profoundly proclaimed and pronounced to Sister Samaritan and to all of us today.

And Sister Samaritan’s light bulb goes, Illumination happens, enlightenment occurs and now her light is shining. That’s when it’s a “you can’t tell it like I can tell it, what the Lord has done for me moment happens!!!”

And just then the bible says that the disciples come back from town from buying food, JUST THEN 2x Not Before JUST THEN and the disciples are shocked and surprised how Jesus is talking to this Mixed Breed unsavory Samaritan woman… Don’t be judging nobody Just because you’re looking at my glory you don’t know my story… Because Sister Samaritan is excited!!! and verse 28 says “The woman then left her waterpot, and went her way into the city, and saith to the men, 29 Come, see a man, which told me all things that ever I did: is not this the Christ? 30 Then they went out of the city, and came unto him.39 Many of the Samaritans in that town believed in Jesus because of what the woman said: “He told me everything I ever did.” 40 When the Samaritans came to Jesus, they begged him to stay with them, so he stayed there two more days. 41 And many more believed because of the things he said. 42 They said to the woman, “First we believed in Jesus because of what you said, but now we believe because we heard him ourselves. We know that this man really is the Savior of the world.”

And Just before the men of the town of Sychar came out to see Jesus, Jesus preached a mini sermonette to His disciples and when the Samaritans got there thy probably heard this. Look at verses 34 -38 because these are the context clues of what did Jesus actually told the men of Sychar to believe in Him. “My food is to do what the One who sent me wants me to do and to finish his work. 35 You have a saying, ‘Four more months till harvest.’ But I tell you, open your eyes and look at the fields ready for harvest now. 36 Already, the one who harvests is being paid and is gathering crops for eternal life. So the one who plants and the one who harvests celebrate at the same time. 37 Here the saying is true, ‘One person plants, and another harvests.’ 38 I sent you to harvest a crop that you did not work on. Others did the work, and you get to finish up their work.”

Jesus had a powerful word for the people. There has to be a word of truth that permeates through the heart of the listeners, so that they can choose the ways of the Lord; There has to be a word from God So they can accept Jesus Christ as the Living Water; There has to be a word from God So that they can embrace the Holy Spirit and worship God in Spirit and in Truth, and then finally There must be a word from God so people can make a cognitive decision to follow Jesus for the rest of their days.
