Introduction- This morning we will be examining I Thess. chapter 1:5-10. Before we get into the text turn over to Acts 17:1-10. For the sake of time I won’t read the passage but in it we see Paul on his second missionary journey to Thessalonica. He preached in the synagogues and many Jews, Greeks, and prominent women believed. This caused issues for him and the new Christians forcing him to flee due to the uprising of the Jews. Paul wrote to the Christians in Thessalonica to encourage them after receiving a report from Timothy.

I. Leaving and Becoming Followers I Thess. 1:5-6

A. Here we see Paul came and brought the gospel with power and confidence
God’s word can bring salvation to all. Romans 1:16 “...for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.”
The gospel has the ability to change entire regions. To reference a section of the passage mentioned earlier Acts 17:6 “...These that have turned the world upside down are come hither also;”
B. Paul lived in a way that made him an example to emulate
Difficult to convert others if your conduct doesn’t reflect holiness
I Peter 2:12 “Having your conversation honest among the Gentiles: that, whereas they speak against you as evildoers, they may by your good works, which they shall behold, glorify God in the day of visitation.”
C. Converted Under Much Pressure
1. We don’t have much legal pressure on practicing our religion today
2. “Its easier to believe in something when it costs you nothing.”
3. Received the gospel in MUCH affliction and received it joyously

II. Lived and Sounded the Word- I Thess. 1:7-9

A. Became Examples Themselves

We ought to be evangelizing and planting seeds in every location in whatever situation. Friends, Family, Work, and Strangers.
The Thessalonians imitated Paul imitating Christ - I Cor 11:1 “Be ye followers of me, even as I also am of Christ.”
If the world is unable to differentiate you from them you need to examine yourself.

B. Sounding the Word
“Here in Brazos County has everyone heard of the church of Christ?”
Imagine being a congregation that did so much evangelism that Paul said “...we need not speak anything”
In every place we go, our faith should also Matt 5:16 “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.”
C. Serving the Living and True God
Serving - Continuous Luke 9:62 “And Jesus said unto him, No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.”
James 4:17 “Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin.”

III. Look Forward to the Son- I Thess. 1:10

A. Christian living must come before confident looking
For a non-Christian and an unfaithful Christian the end is wrath
2 Peter 2:22 “But it is happened unto them according to the true proverb, The dog is turned to his own vomit again; and the sow that was washed to her wallowing in the mire.”
Not sharing the gospel is selfish since we know the en
B. Parallel Passage
2 Peter 3:10-14 “But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up. Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness, Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat? Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness. Wherefore, beloved, seeing that ye look for such things, be diligent that ye may be found of him in peace, without spot, and blameless.”

Conclusion- What we have learned from 1 Thessalonians 1:5-10 is that God’s grace has given us the plan to leave sin and become followers, to live and be examples while sounding the Word of God, and to wait for Jesus Christ's return from Heaven who has delivered us from wrath. Let's be diligent to be like the Thessalonians.
