Un-Plugged: Bringing More Than a Song

(A 2023 summer series targeting the heart of God—from mine to His)
SONG
We Praise You
WELCOME...
The Cornerstone Family is excited that you have taken time to attend our weekend service!
Welcome to this campus or if by Facebook, thanks for capturing our LIVE Stream today.
Cornerstone exists to “Bring Hope to Find and Follow Jesus.”
Thus, you will see us use a hashtag that says #hopeishere.
We believe that together—we can live stronger lives and change the World we live in through Jesus.
Thank you again for joining us today.
TODAY WE COME TO CELEBRATE GOD AND HIS WORD: WITH A FOCUS ON ROMANS
WE HAVE MADE THESE STATEMENTS...
That the Power of God to Salvation is...
God giving His son—Jesus to die on the cross for our sacrifice that results in our Salvation as He rose from the Dead and destroyed the bondage, the stronghold over you and me.
Religion is said to be...
what will bring to us Life Evermore, but only Jesus can do that.
God is not in Religion—religion is...
a man made substitute for God’s Power. Religion promises life, but entangles and imprisons.
God wants a Relationship with you, Not a Religious form.
So we worship not in form, but from the heart
pour out your heart this morning
no one else can worship for you
SONG
You are Worthy of All My Praise
God makes us god like not us for we are not gods....
The core of our sin is
Pride—Rebellion—and Independence from God, and Religion doesn't solve the problem—it caters to our sinful nature.
Head Change:
To know that the law cannot remove our need for salvation but illuminates our need for salvation.
WORKS don’t WORK!
Heart Change:
To feel convicted that we’re unable to keep the law and GRATEFUL for God’s grace.
SONG
You are Awesome in this Place
You are Worthy of it all
FLOW HOLY SPIRIT
INTRO
ROMANS IS TO US THE CHURCH
yet we find the Romans Road…
a series of scriptures that leads us to Christ.
great for evangelism
great for us to grow on too.
Paul is anticipating the blow back from...
the Jews who are holding the Torah and asking, “Are you saying that all of this doesn't mean a thing?”
We might ask the question differently, “Are you saying that going to church, all these years, taking the kids to VBS, and even Christian schools was all worthless?”
Even the Romans were very Religious— they had all kinds of temples and gods to honor along with Caesar, “Are you saying that all these temples and gods have no value along with honoring Caesar too?”
vs 1. Circumcision benefits?
Romans 3:1 NLT
1 Then what’s the advantage of being a Jew? Is there any value in the ceremony of circumcision?
Circumcision was Paul’s shorthand for the whole Jewish Law
vs 2. Considerable in every way
Romans 3:2 NLT
2 Yes, there are great benefits! First of all, the Jews were entrusted with the whole revelation of God.
of course the Law/Word is important
The purpose of the revelation was to bring Jews to the place to call on God and say, “we can’t do it!”
It was not a self-help technique .
the law was always to point us to Christ; not to pat ourselves on the back .
Not for us to function apart from God’s Grace
vs 9. Are we Better than others?
Romans 3:9 NLT
9 Well then, should we conclude that we Jews are better than others? No, not at all, for we have already shown that all people, whether Jews or Gentiles, are under the power of sin.
Are we better than the Gentiles?
Paul says, “Not at all!”
Quotes from the Bible
to show them he is not making up some new thing.
vs 10. No One Righteous
Romans 3:10 NLT
As the Scriptures say, “No one is righteous— not even one.
“Not even one” (A quote from Psalm 14:1)
Think of some of the righteous people you know… when the secrets of our hearts are revealed it will be humiliating
No One found righteous as “our sin makes us distort and corrupt the truth about God.”
Vs 11. “No One who understands”
“All have turned away” and “become worthless.”
Romans 3:11 NLT
11 No one is truly wise; no one is seeking God.
Here is another verse
Psalm 53:1–3 NLT
1 Only fools say in their hearts, “There is no God.” They are corrupt, and their actions are evil; not one of them does good! 2 God looks down from heaven on the entire human race; he looks to see if anyone is truly wise, if anyone seeks God. 3 But no, all have turned away; all have become corrupt. No one does good, not a single one!
We have turned from Him and sought our own ways.
It’s been said that, apart from God’s regenerating grace that creates newness in us -- we flee from him internally even while we seek him externally.
vs.12 No One Does Good
Romans 3:12 NLT
12 All have turned away; all have become useless. No one does good, not a single one.”
Vs. 13-14 Their Talk is Foul
Romans 3:13–14 NLT
13 “Their talk is foul, like the stench from an open grave. Their tongues are filled with lies.” “Snake venom drips from their lips.” 14 “Their mouths are full of cursing and bitterness.”
Paul is saying that we can see our corruption best through our words.
What have you said to friends, family, even to ourselves.
We don’t truly Fear the Lord.
Psalm 36:1 NIV
1 I have a message from God in my heart concerning the sinfulness of the wicked: There is no fear of God before their eyes.
vs. 20 The Law Fails Again
Romans 3:20 NLT
20 For no one can ever be made right with God by doing what the law commands. The law simply shows us how sinful we are.
We fail to see God’s glory in everyday life.
We fail to see who God really is and have no fear of Him.
A righteous fear to honor Him.
God doesn’t want heaven full of people who got there because they were fearful of being punished.
God wants heaven full of those who Love Him, and Honor Him for who He is!
Remember:
The Law only points to sin.
The knowledge of sin doesn’t save us.
The Law is to reflect our sinfulness like a mirror and shows us the shape of our heart.
Paul is writing, not just for us to get saved, but to work out that salvation in our daily lives— as we Honor God.
Pigs — Slop
God doesn’t want people who are eager for the slop, but people who love him and refuse to indulge in the sinful slop of the world.
Sin is a condition not an action
We are not sick because of our symptoms, we have symptoms because of we are sick.
We are not sinners because we sin— we sin because we are sinners.
To receive Christ we have to honestly dive into the depth of our problem and see we are hopeless without Jesus.
J.D. Greear says, “most people don’t feel their need to be saved because we’ve never realized how truly lost we are.”
Life Change:
To cease all attempts to earn salvation and depend instead on the grace of God offered in Christ.
This next paragraph is the focal point of Romans, but also the Bible:
Paul is about to show us what beautiful Grace really looks like in the upcoming study.
Traditionally the Romans Road highlights a series of verses in Paul’s argument, revealing our sin, need for salvation, and the way to justification:
Romans 3:23: “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.”
Romans 6:23: “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
Romans 5:8: “But God proves his own love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”
Romans 10:9: “If you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.”
Romans 10:13: “For everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”
Romans 3:21 NLT
21 But now God has shown us a way to be made right with him without keeping the requirements of the law, as was promised in the writings of Moses and the prophets long ago.
Five Words
Redemption
Justification
Propitiation
Grace
Faith
Five Words Defined
Redemption
vs 22-23
the word redemption. To redeem, he said, is to “buy something back,” or “to bring it back from destruction.”
When God redeemed you, from what destructive habits and patterns did he buy you back?
Justification
vs. 23-24
What does it mean to be justified? J.D. said to be justified means to be declared righteous.
Propitiation or Mercy Seat or Atoning Sacrifice In Romans 3:25,
Romans 3:25 NKJV
25 whom God set forth as a propitiation by His blood, through faith, to demonstrate His righteousness, because in His forbearance God had passed over the sins that were previously committed,
The Greek word that means that God’s wrath has been satisfied; his claim against you is settled.”
Grace Empowers Obedience
vs. 27-31
the law functions is like a mirror, showing us how far we fall short of God’s standard. Our only appropriate response is to run to God’s grace.
God’s
Redemption
At
Christ’s
Expense
Faith
vrs. 27-28
The linchpin of God’s grace is faith. The Greek word for faith is pistis, which means “to lean your weight on” or “join yourself to.” While faith may seem like an easy path to receiving God’s grace, the reality is it’s sometimes hard to “lean our weight on” God. In what situations do you find it most difficult to lean on God?
God’s grace is not only pardon; it’s also —the power to obey.
If God’s grace empowers us for obedience, how should his grace reshape the way we think about obeying his law?
ALTER CALL
What difference could it make in your day-to-day life to believe that God has given you the grace you need to obey his commands?
Make a list of the three most common ways you struggle to obey God’s law. Beside each item on your list write, “with God’s grace, I have the power to obey.”
Now, pray and ask God to impart to you the grace you’ll need to remain faithful to his law.
AMEN
