The Magnification of Mercy Version 2 (Genesis 19:1-29)
The Magnification of Mercy Version 2 (Genesis 19:1-29)
Meaning
Meaning
Mercy - God not giving us what we deserve.
Everyone of us deserve hell, but we’re not there. So God is being merciful to us, whether lost or saved.
Magnify - to increase the dimensions of something, causing objects to appear larger than they are.
The object magnified doesn’t get bigger itself, but the object magnified is easier seen from the perspective of the one examining the magnified object.
Binoculars while hunting. Camera’s with a zoom. Telescopes to see the stars.
God has always been abundant in mercy. (1 Peter 1:3 “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,” ) God didn’t grow his mercy for Lot; Lot just experienced the mercy of God in a magnified way. Lot knew that God was a God of mercy, but through what happened at Sodom, Lot got to carefully examine the mercy of God.
Lot wasn’t looking for the mercy of God; God magnified his mercy to Lot. (THOU hast magnified THY mercy)(Genesis 19:19)
The Mistake of Lot (Genesis 13:11)
The Mistake of Lot (Genesis 13:11)
Lot chose to go to Sodom. Though he was righteous (2 Peter 2:6-9 “And turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrha into ashes condemned them with an overthrow, making them an ensample unto those that after should live ungodly; And delivered just Lot, vexed with the filthy conversation of the wicked: (For that righteous man dwelling among them, in seeing and hearing, vexed his righteous soul from day to day with their unlawful deeds;) The Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptations, and to reserve the unjust unto the day of judgment to be punished:” ) Lot chose the world. We should be very careful in our choices.
The Wonder of Sodom (beheld all the plain)
beheld - to fix the eyes upon with attention, to observe or examine carefully.
Instead of examining and magnifying the things of God, he was examining and magnifying the things of the world.
The Wellness of Sodom (well watered every where)
Sodom looked provisional, promising, pleasant, and pretty.
Satan would have you think the same thing about sin.
The Wickedness of Sodom (13:13)
Sodomy wasn’t the only sin in Sodom
Ezekiel 16:49-50 “Behold, this was the iniquity of thy sister Sodom, pride, fulness of bread, and abundance of idleness was in her and in her daughters, neither did she strengthen the hand of the poor and needy. And they were haughty, and committed abomination before me: therefore I took them away as I saw good.”
Jude 5-7 “I will therefore put you in remembrance, though ye once knew this, how that the Lord, having saved the people out of the land of Egypt, afterward destroyed them that believed not. And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, he hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day. Even as Sodom and Gomorrha, and the cities about them, in like manner giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire.”
Strange - one not of the same nature or kind
We could be getting close to the days of Lot that Christ talked of.
Luke 17:28-29 “Likewise also as it was in the days of Lot; they did eat, they drank, they bought, they sold, they planted, they builded; But the same day that Lot went out of Sodom it rained fire and brimstone from heaven, and destroyed them all.”
The Wanting of Sodom (13:12)
Lot pitched his tent toward Sodom. The things of the world looked really great to him, so he made his home there.
The Madness of Lot
The Madness of Lot
Because of what Lot had chosen, it effected his life immensely. What you do and who you fellowship with can change you.
Lot’s Position (19:1-2)
the city gate was the entrance to the city and where business was usually conducted.
Lot is welcoming people in to this wicked city.
Lot’s Priorities (19:4-8)
All he wanted was to please the world.
Lot’s Predicament (19:9)
The Sodomites got mad because Lot didn’t give them what they wanted and thus were going to do worse to Lot than they were the angels.
When Lot was trying to warn his two sons-in-laws about the judgement to come, they mocked him.
The way we live can effect others that we talk to.
The Mercy Towards Lot
The Mercy Towards Lot
Lot’s Lingering (19:15-16)
Lot knew judgment was coming, yet dragged his feet.
Lot’s Leading (19:16)
