The Departure and the command

Has something bad ever led to something good?
We are in the midst of passion week, actually the last night of Jesus earthly life before his being handed over.
He has been anointed for His death
His triumphal entry
Jesus foretells his death, and manner of His death
Jesus washes some stinky feet
Jesus explains His example
Jesus gives instructions to His disciples
Jesus predicts the betrayal and identifies who (just John knows who)
Maybe we better look back before we go forward tonight
A look back, before looking forward (Jn13:21-26)
John 13:21–22 NASB95
21 When Jesus had said this, He became troubled in spirit, and testified and said, “Truly, truly, I say to you, that one of you will betray Me.” 22 The disciples began looking at one another, at a loss to know of which one He was speaking.
John 13:23–24 NASB95
23 There was reclining on Jesus’ bosom one of His disciples, whom Jesus loved. 24 So Simon Peter gestured to him, and said to him, “Tell us who it is of whom He is speaking.”
John 13:25–26 NASB95
25 He, leaning back thus on Jesus’ bosom, said to Him, “Lord, who is it?” 26 Jesus then answered, “That is the one for whom I shall dip the morsel and give it to him.” So when He had dipped the morsel, He took and gave it to Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot.
John was the one reclining on Jesus bosom (v.23); he was the only one who heard Jesus reply to the question (v.26).
Jesus predicted (v.21); Jesus revealed (v.26); Jesus revealed with an act of love by dip the morsel (called a sop) which was a act of honor by the host.
That brings us to tonight. we will look at the section, spend a few minutes on the departure then focus on the command.

The passage

John 13:27–28 NASB95
27 After the morsel, Satan then entered into him. Therefore Jesus said to him, “What you do, do quickly.” 28 Now no one of those reclining at the table knew for what purpose He had said this to him.
John 13:28–29 NASB95
28 Now no one of those reclining at the table knew for what purpose He had said this to him. 29 For some were supposing, because Judas had the money box, that Jesus was saying to him, “Buy the things we have need of for the feast”; or else, that he should give something to the poor.
John 13:30–31 NASB95
30 So after receiving the morsel he went out immediately; and it was night. 31 Therefore when he had gone out, Jesus said, “Now is the Son of Man glorified, and God is glorified in Him;
John 13:32–33 NASB95
32 if God is glorified in Him, God will also glorify Him in Himself, and will glorify Him immediately. 33 “Little children, I am with you a little while longer. You will seek Me; and as I said to the Jews, now I also say to you, ‘Where I am going, you cannot come.’
John 13:34–35 NASB95
34 “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another, even as I have loved you, that you also love one another. 35 “By this all men will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.”
John 13:35–36 NASB95
35 “By this all men will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.” 36 Simon Peter said to Him, “Lord, where are You going?” Jesus answered, “Where I go, you cannot follow Me now; but you will follow later.”
John 13:37–38 NASB95
37 Peter said to Him, “Lord, why can I not follow You right now? I will lay down my life for You.” 38 Jesus answered, “Will you lay down your life for Me? Truly, truly, I say to you, a rooster will not crow until you deny Me three times.
When did Jesus speak to Judas, and how do you know it was Judas (v.27)?
What was the purpose that some thought Judas departed (v.29)?
After a very specific statement in (v.31, 32), does that now make sense what He says in (v.33)?
A little longer, where I am going you cannot come
Jesus gives a “new commandment” in (v.34) and it is not love one another, what is it?
What is the results of (v.34) in (v.35)?
What is Peter’s proclamation (v.37)?

Satan, Judas and the departure

Set in his heart (Jn13:2) revealed
What was in his heart was now fully revealed (below not on the screen; have them look back, have someone read it)
Jn13:2 “2 During supper, the devil having already put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon, to betray Him,”
Judas rejected the love of Jesus, the favor of Jesus, accepted the love (footwashing, and the SOP -morsel) and yet, the heart was now known and Satan entered and Jesus said do quickly (v.27)
F.F. Bruce said: “Satan could not have entered him and he not granted him admission. Had he been willing to say ‘Not’ to the adversary, all of his Master’s intercessory power was available to him there and then to strengthen him.”
Do you think maybe that is why Peter says:
1Pt5:8 “8 Be of sober spirit, be on the alert. Your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.”
The disciples were asking, “tell us who it is? (v.24); Jesus told them it would be the one who dipped the morsel (this is the sop (v.26) - - - yet they did not get it when it was given to Judas, they did not suspect him, when he got up and left after receiving the morsel he left (v.30).
Only John knew why, for he was the one leaning on the Lord’s breast (v.26) he may be the only one who heard the Lord’s answer to the question in (v.24).
As I mentioned earlier tonight I did not want to stay in this section too long, I wanted to press on to the “new command.”

A New Command

Is it new or old, it is re-emphasizing or is there a new element? Let’s look together
John 13:31–32 HCSB
31 When he had gone out, Jesus said, “Now the Son of Man is glorified, and God is glorified in Him. 32 If God is glorified in Him, God will also glorify Him in Himself and will glorify Him at once.
Do you see any key word in (vv.31-32)?
5-times in two verses. Remember
The world was looked at the cross as defeat, shame, humiliation. Jesus looked at it as glorification, as the purpose He came, as the place where “it was finished.” It was the exact place where the heart of Jesus, and the love of Jesus was made fully known.
He addresses the disciples as little children, not as an insult, as if they did not, could not understand anything. He meant it as a term of endearment. As with a sense of tenderness, compassion, care as a parent would for a child. With recognition like a parent would for a care for child. For the time was limited. Remember he was just hours from the cross and there was much to convey. The new command being a part of it.
A little longer I will be with you (v.33). WHAT! A little longer. This made no sense to them. (consider Mk10:28)
Mark 10:28 NLT
28 Then Peter began to speak up. “We’ve given up everything to follow you,” he said.
They thought the kingdom was going to be here on earth and they were going to have special places in His earthly kingdom.
Now we get to “new” commandment - “love one another”
New implies freshness, rather than recent or different.
What, is this love Jesus in a new freshness, in a new way since he is returning to the Father, since he is going to fulfill his purpose? No!
There now is to be a special love for “one another” for the followers of Jesus
Previously the Jews knew what it said in (Lev19:18, and Mt22:35-40) - love God, love your neighbor, but now it said “one another.”
Jon Courson said this, and it is really good: “Look carefully at what Jesus is saying because it is radical. Yes the O.T. Is filled with commands and exhortations to love. But Jesus here makes everything new when He says, ‘Love one another as I have love you.’ How did Jesus love them? How does Jesus love us? That’s what’s new.”
Let me give you some scriptures to consider then a few thoughts and then close.
No greater Love (Jn15:13)
John 15:13 NASB95
13 “Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for his friends.
No greater commandment (Mk12:31)
Mark 12:31 NASB95
31 “The second is this, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.”
No greater example to husbands than Christ to the church (Eph5:25)
Ephesians 5:25 NASB95
25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself up for her,
No greater example in service (Jn13:4-5)
John 13:4–5 NASB95
4 got up from supper, and laid aside His garments; and taking a towel, He girded Himself. 5 Then He poured water into the basin, and began to wash the disciples’ feet and to wipe them with the towel with which He was girded.
No great example in sacrifice (Jn19:28-30)
John 19:30 NASB95
30 Therefore when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished!” And He bowed His head and gave up His spirit.
The new commandment is to love like Jesus did.
To love sacrificially in a way to a place of a end of ourselves to a love of others. love one another.
it is laying down your life for another, not demanding your rights. It is forgiving others just like the Lord has forgiven you.
It is loving others so that they will know you are His disciples.
When you love like Jesus did it is to the point of death to self
John 13:37–38 NASB95
37 Peter said to Him, “Lord, why can I not follow You right now? I will lay down my life for You.” 38 Jesus answered, “Will you lay down your life for Me? Truly, truly, I say to you, a rooster will not crow until you deny Me three times.
Peter was going to fall short, the Lord knew it. We fall short (Rom3:23); Peter would be reconciled and so are we. The Lord’s question was will you lay down your life Peter for me? Will you love like me? Will you put end to yourself and love like me. The answer was YES. Though he fell short. He did, and our answer should be yes too.
