III. Moral Attributes

A. Goodness

This means that God is the final standard of goodness. Furthermore, it means that everything that God does is good and worthy of praise.
Genesis 1:31 NKJV
Then God saw everything that He had made, and indeed it was very good. So the evening and the morning were the sixth day.
TOB-desirable, usable, morally good
Psalm 107:1 NKJV
Oh, give thanks to the Lord, for He is good! For His mercy endures forever.
The knowledge of Gods goodness helps us in the study of ethics and aesthetics.
What is good? Good is what God approves.

B. Love

Gods love means that God eternally gives of Himself to others.
1 John 4:8 NKJV
He who does not love does not know God, for God is love.
The Father loves the Son
John 17:24 NKJV
“Father, I desire that they also whom You gave Me may be with Me where I am, that they may behold My glory which You have given Me; for You loved Me before the foundation of the world.
The Son loves the Father
John 14:31 NKJV
But that the world may know that I love the Father, and as the Father gave Me commandment, so I do. Arise, let us go from here.
We should love God.
Matthew 22:37–38 NKJV
Jesus said to him, “ ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the first and great commandment.
We should love one another.
John 13:35 NKJV
By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.”

C. Mercy, Grace, and Patience

These three attributes can be viewed independently or as specific attributes of God’s goodness.
God’s mercy is His goodness towards those in misery and distress
God’s grace is His goodness towards those who deserve punishment
God’s patience is His goodness in holding punishment from those who sin over aa period of time.
They are often mentioned together.
Exodus 34:6 NKJV
And the Lord passed before him and proclaimed, “The Lord, the Lord God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abounding in goodness and truth,
Psalm 103:8 NKJV
The Lord is merciful and gracious, Slow to anger, and abounding in mercy.
1. Grace
Exodus 33:19 NRSV
And he said, “I will make all my goodness pass before you, and will proclaim before you the name, ‘The Lord’; and I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will show mercy on whom I will show mercy.
1 Peter 5:10 NKJV
But may the God of all grace, who called us to His eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after you have suffered a while, perfect, establish, strengthen, and settle you.
2. Mercy
2 Samuel 24:14 NKJV
And David said to Gad, “I am in great distress. Please let us fall into the hand of the Lord, for His mercies are great; but do not let me fall into the hand of man.”
2 Corinthians 1:3 NKJV
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort,
3. Patience
Psalm 145:8 NKJV
The Lord is gracious and full of compassion, Slow to anger and great in mercy.
James 1:19 NKJV
So then, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath;
James 5:8 NKJV
You also be patient. Establish your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is at hand.

D. Holiness

God is separated from sin and devoted to seeking His own honor.
This is a two part nature. from sin and to honor.
Wherever God dwells is holy.
Psalm 24:3 NKJV
Who may ascend into the hill of the Lord? Or who may stand in His holy place?
He is the most holy. Is 6.3
Isaiah 6:3 NKJV
And one cried to another and said: “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; The whole earth is full of His glory!”
We are to be Holy. Heb 12.10
Hebrews 12:14 NKJV
Pursue peace with all people, and holiness, without which no one will see the Lord:

E. Peace/Order

Although these are not traditionally listed attributes of God, they are based upon biblical teachings.
1 Corinthians 14:33 NKJV
For God is not the author of confusion but of peace, as in all the churches of the saints.
Philippians 4:9 NKJV
The things which you learned and received and heard and saw in me, these do, and the God of peace will be with you.
God’s peace means, “In God’s being and in His actions, He is separate from all confusion and disorder. Yet, He is He is continually active in innumerable well-ordered, fully controlled, simultaneous actions.

F. Righteousness, Justice

These are the same word in both Hebrew and Greek.
They mean that God always acts in accordance with what is right and is himself the final standard of what is right.
Deuteronomy 32:4 NKJV
He is the Rock, His work is perfect; For all His ways are justice, A God of truth and without injustice; Righteous and upright is He.
Romans 3:25–26 NKJV
whom God set forth as a propitiation by His blood, through faith, to demonstrate His righteousness, because in His forbearance God had passed over the sins that were previously committed, to demonstrate at the present time His righteousness, that He might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.
He is so righteous that He could not simply overlook sin, but instead, demanded a payment.

G. Jealousy

God always seeks to protect His own honor.
Although we often view this word in a negative light, it is not inherently bad.
2 Corinthians 11:2 NKJV
For I am jealous for you with godly jealousy. For I have betrothed you to one husband, that I may present you as a chaste virgin to Christ.
Here Pauls jealousy was that he sought to protect them.
It is not wrong for God to seek His owner because He is worthy of it.
Isaiah 48:9–11 NKJV
“For My name’s sake I will defer My anger, And for My praise I will restrain it from you, So that I do not cut you off. Behold, I have refined you, but not as silver; I have tested you in the furnace of affliction. For My own sake, for My own sake, I will do it; For how should My name be profaned? And I will not give My glory to another.
To understand that God is worthy of all praise. To understand this is the secret4 to true worship.

H. Wrath

Wrath= God Hates Sin
Exodus 32:9–11 NKJV
And the Lord said to Moses, “I have seen this people, and indeed it is a stiff-necked people! Now therefore, let Me alone, that My wrath may burn hot against them and I may consume them. And I will make of you a great nation.” Then Moses pleaded with the Lord his God, and said: “Lord, why does Your wrath burn hot against Your people whom You have brought out of the land of Egypt with great power and with a mighty hand?
John 3:36 NKJV
He who believes in the Son has everlasting life; and he who does not believe the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him.”
1 Thessalonians 1:10 NKJV
and to wait for His Son from heaven, whom He raised from the dead, even Jesus who delivers us from the wrath to come.
We should hate sin.
Hebrews 1:9 NKJV
You have loved righteousness and hated lawlessness; Therefore God, Your God, has anointed You With the oil of gladness more than Your companions.”
