Peter’s Confession About Jesus. 13 When Jesus went into the region of Caesarea Philippi he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” 14 They replied, “Some say John the Baptist, others Elijah, still others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” 15 He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” 16 j Simon Peter said in reply, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.” 17 Jesus said to him in reply, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah. For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my heavenly Father. 18 And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it. 19 I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.” 20 m Then he strictly ordered his disciples to tell no one that he was the Messiah.
The First Prediction of the Passion. 21 From that time on, Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer greatly from the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed and on the third day be raised. 22 Then Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him, “God forbid, Lord! No such thing shall ever happen to you.” 23 He turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are an obstacle to me. You are thinking not as God does, but as human beings do.” [1]
“Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” 14 They replied, “Some say John the Baptist, others Elijah, still others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” 15 He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” 16 j Simon Peter said in reply, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.”
We can ask to many people how they would like the Church, but the final word is in the head of the Church, we can see here the firs definition of the Saint Peter, Jesus is the son of God.
So the church is no funded in the opinion of the people is founded the confession that Jesus is the Son of God.
Vatican I (1870) cited this episode as biblical support for the primacy of Peter and successive popes. The Council’s interpretation touches five points of doctrine: (1) The Magisterium built upon Peter is instituted by Jesus Christ; (2) Peter is given a unique role as chief teacher and ruler (primacy of jurisdiction) over the Church; (3) Peter is the visible head of the Church; (4) Peter’s authority is passed on through successors; (5) through Peter, Christ himself assures the infallible preservation of the gospel in the Church
Simon Peter said in reply, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.” 17
Peter confesses that Jesus in more than merely holy man he is the son of the Holy God.
“Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah. For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my heavenly Father.
Blessed are you Peter, Scott Hand says is like the patriarch of the new covenant, is called blessed like Abraham, suggest that Peter assumes a role in salvation history similar to Abraham’s. (1) Both are blessed by God (Gen 14:19); (2) both respond with heroic faith (Heb 11:8); (3) both receive a divine mission (Gen 12:1–3); (4) both have their names changed (Gen 17:5); (5) both are called a “rock” (Is 51:1–2); and (6) both are assured a victory over the “gate” of their enemies (Gen 22:17).[2]
You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.” 17 Jesus said to him in reply, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah. For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my heavenly Father.
You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.” 17 Jesus said to him in reply, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah. For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my heavenly Father.
Flesh and blood, Peter did not receive this for any human been, but from the Holy Spirit.
you did not get it from the Jews’ traditions, but from God’s revelation.
After the confession of Peter comes the confession of Jesus.
You know my name and my role, now I will tell you your name and who are you.
You are Peter, and upon this rock will build my church.
Jesus changes his name and give the function to be the foundation of the Church.
Many people have denial this saying the that rock is Jesus,
But Peter is called with his new name Rock that Jesus. Of curse Peter is the rock and is the base and the foundation of the Church, but no the flesh and blood, but the power that have receive from God.
And the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it.
What the gates mean the power, because when and army surrounded a city, they put most of his effort to destroy the gates. So, the power of the devil will no destroy, he will attack but never destroy.
I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you lose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.
Jesus here evokes Is 22:15–25, where the prime minister’s office is handed on to a successor by the symbolic act of handing on the “key of the house [i.e., kingdom] of David” (Is 22:22). In Matthew, Jesus is the new Davidic king, who appoints Peter the prime minister over the kingdom of heaven in the Church.
The king is Jesus, and from know his vicar will be petter and his successor.
Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you lose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.
(1) It signifies teaching authority and the ability to make mandatory decisions. Rabbis were said to make “binding” interpretations of the Law. (2) It denotes authority to include or exclude members of a religious community. (3) It signals the forgiveness of sins.
To our Daly life.
Firs thing is that, be Shure that we are in the church funded by Jesus Christ, we have the list of all the Popes until the first Pope.
We must no base our faith in the opinion of the People, what people says the bible says but the most important what does Peter and his success say about it.
Las thing, the confession of Jesus mean suffering, after receiving this confession Jesus tell them that even that he is the son of God he must suffer to go to haven.
Do not be afraid to the suffering.
Saint Jerome: “Divine Providence directs everything and what you consider to be an evil is a remedy”.
“When we pray, we talk to God. When we read Sacred Scripture, God speaks to us”;
