Lord Teach Us To Pray

22 distinct times recorded that Jesus prayed
this may take several weeks
Philippians 4:9 “The things which you learned and received and heard and saw in me, these do, and the God of peace will be with you.” Learn by example. Show, explain, do with instruction, do on own. Learn to teach yourself. Learn Resources

1. At His Baptism

Lk 3:21-22 “When all the people were baptized, it came to pass that Jesus also was baptized; and while He prayed, the heaven was opened. And the Holy Spirit descended in bodily form like a dove upon Him, and a voice came from heaven which said, “You are My beloved Son; in You I am well pleased.””
Praying - a continual attitude
Baptism - a public statement to world and angelic realm: I am here and beginning My ministry

Well Pleased - (parental acceptance children do something and look for smile)
A personal address that was meant to be overheard

Morning - before sunrise; deliberate and planned
Went out - Left the commotion of the crowd
Solitary Place - alone; a personal time
Preparation - before His first public healing (Leper)
Luke 5:16 “So He Himself often withdrew into the wilderness and prayed.”
After the leper was healed
“Often” - a habitual action - HIs nature was to pray
Alone - personal, deliberate, secluded
Wilderness - not a comfortable place (distracting: animals, weather, danger, Satan’s place)
Before having to deal with the Pharisees

The Twelve
The Sermon on the Mount
Addressed to God - He did what He heard and saw from the Father John8:38 “I speak what I have seen with My Father, and you do what you have seen with your father.””
{John 3:32;5:19,30;14:10,24}

4. Before Feeding Five Thousand

Included in all four gospels
Mt 14:19 “Then He commanded the multitudes to sit down on the grass. And He took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, He blessed and broke and gave the loaves to the disciples; and the disciples gave to the multitudes.”
Mk 6:41 “And when He had taken the five loaves and the two fish, He looked up to heaven, blessed and broke the loaves, and gave them to His disciples to set before them; and the two fish He divided among them all.”
Lk 9:16 “Then He took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, He blessed and broke them, and gave them to the disciples to set before the multitude.”
Jn 6:11 “And Jesus took the loaves, and when He had given thanks He distributed them to the disciples, and the disciples to those sitting down; and likewise of the fish, as much as they wanted.”
He did not ask - not a prayer of petition - didn’t ask for the miracle
He blessed the food - recognized the provision
He Looked Up - eyes were open (looked to the Father)

5. After Feeding Five Thousand

Mt 14:23 “And when He had sent the multitudes away, He went up on the mountain by Himself to pray. Now when evening came, He was alone there.”
Mk 6:46 “And when He had sent them away, He departed to the mountain to pray.”
Jn 6:15 “Therefore when Jesus perceived that they were about to come and take Him by force to make Him king, He departed again to the mountain by Himself alone.”
Separated Self from disciples and crowd - sent them away
Went to Mountain - high place (hard to get to)
Retreat from earthly plan Jn 6:15 “Therefore when Jesus perceived that they were about to come and take Him by force to make Him king, He departed again to the mountain by Himself alone.”
Ends a busy day - not too tired - thanks
Looks to final year of ministry - seeks plan
Leaves disciples to cross sea by themselves
From Peter walking on the water to CALM Mt 14:32-33 “And when they got into the boat, the wind ceased. Then those who were in the boat came and worshiped Him, saying, “Truly You are the Son of God.””
