25 Therefore, putting away lying, “Let each one of you speak truth with his neighbor,” for we are members of one another.
26 “Be angry, and do not sin”: do not let the sun go down on your wrath,
27 nor give place to the devil.
28 Let him who stole steal no longer, but rather let him labor, working with his hands what is good, that he may have something to give him who has need.
29 Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers.
30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.
31 Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, and evil speaking be put away from you, with all malice.
Do not grieve the Holy Spirit.
Connected with the proceeding verses by the word “and”.
So it seems that Paul is saying that by us not putting off the old man and putting on the new man we grieve the Holy Spirit.
But before we consider how or why these things would grieve the Holy Spirit let look at the second part of this verse.
Ephesians 4:30 (NKJV)
30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.
The Holy Spirt has sealed us for the day of redemption.
How does the Holy Spirit seal us?
Ephesians 1:13–14 (NKJV)
13 In Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise,
14 who is the guarantee of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, to the praise of His glory.
He does this by keeping us holy.
14 Pursue peace with all people, and holiness, without which no one will see the Lord:
2 Thessalonians 2:13 (NKJV)
13 But we are bound to give thanks to God always for you, brethren beloved by the Lord, because God from the beginning chose you for salvation through sanctification by the Spirit and belief in the truth,
Sanctification is literally to make holy.
So we must be holy in order to see the Lord and the indwelling Holy Spirit is the guarantee that He will make us holy. He has sealed us for holiness. So coming back to our passage
30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.
By whom you were sealed for holiness through sanctification until the day of redemption. So how do we grieve the Holy Spirit.
Paul has been telling us to put off the old man and put on the new which is sanctification.
Looking at the proceeding verses
Ephesians 4:25–29 (NKJV)
25 Therefore, putting away lying, “Let each one of you speak truth with his neighbor,” for we are members of one another.
26 “Be angry, and do not sin”: do not let the sun go down on your wrath,
27 nor give place to the devil.
28 Let him who stole steal no longer, but rather let him labor, working with his hands what is good, that he may have something to give him who has need.
29 Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers.
When we do any of these deeds of the old man we are working in direct opposition to the work of the Spirit in our lives this. Paul says, grieves the Holy Spirit.
Now God is I Am that I Am. He is not effected by anything outside Himself. This is a attribute which is called the impassability of God in theology. Which simply put means nothing outside of God can change His feelings or cause Him pain. So in other words we can’t hurt God’s feelings. However, Paul uses this word grieve because it is as if we are hurting the feelings of the Holy Spirit when we act against the work of sanctification which He is doing in us. So do not grieve the Holy Spirit by whom you were sealed for holiness until the day of redemption.
The day of redemption being the completion of our sanctification.
So we must put off the old man and put on the new or in other words be sanctified. Do not fight against the Holy Spirit’s work of making you holy but rather yield to it.
So instead of fighting against the Holy Spirit with a hard heart be tenderhearted.
31 Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, and evil speaking be put away from you, with all malice.
32 And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you.
7 In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace
3 Take heed to yourselves. If your brother sins against you, rebuke him; and if he repents, forgive him.
4 And if he sins against you seven times in a day, and seven times in a day returns to you, saying, ‘I repent,’ you shall forgive him.”
So do we only forgive if they repent?
“forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you.”
8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
31 Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, and evil speaking be put away from you, with all malice.
32 And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you.
