Psalm 107:29 KJV 1900
He maketh the storm a calm, So that the waves thereof are still.
Nahum 1:7 KJV 1900
The Lord is good, a strong hold in the day of trouble; And he knoweth them that trust in him.

I. Introduction

A. It never ceases to amaze me how crazy the storms of life can be.

1. We get overwhelmed.

2. Stress steps in and causes us to do rash things.

B. No matter how crazy the raging sea or the height of the waves, God still rules the waves and the wind!

Psalm 89:9 KJV 1900
Thou rulest the raging of the sea: When the waves thereof arise, thou stillest them.
Psalm 65:7 KJV 1900
Which stilleth the noise of the seas, The noise of their waves, and the tumult of the people.

II. Jesus walks into the disciples storm.

A. Sometimes without us realizing it Jesus sends us into the storm.

Matthew 14:22 KJV 1900
And straightway Jesus constrained his disciples to get into a ship, and to go before him unto the other side, while he sent the multitudes away.

1. The word “constrained” in this passage in the original means to constrain, force, press.

2. Jesus persuaded the disciples to get into the ship and head to the other side.

3. Many of these men were fishermen and likely knew that there was a storm brewing, but Jesus insisted that they get in the ship and head to the other side anyways.

4. They had to trust that Jesus knew something they didn’t know.

B. When we are in the storm we should count it all joy!

James 1:2–4 KJV 1900
My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience. But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.

1. He knows what I need to grow, thus the reason I rejoice in the fact that I am facing another storm!

Romans 5:3–5 KJV 1900
And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience; And patience, experience; and experience, hope: And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.

C. While in the storm Jesus comes to us!

Matthew 14:24–25 KJV 1900
But the ship was now in the midst of the sea, tossed with waves: for the wind was contrary. And in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went unto them, walking on the sea.

1. He is always there for us! An very present help!

Psalm 46:1 KJV 1900
God is our refuge and strength, A very present help in trouble.

2. No matter what you are going through!

Isaiah 43:2 KJV 1900
When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; And through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: When thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned; Neither shall the flame kindle upon thee.

3. He’s already been before you and prepared the way for you! Never forsaking you!

Deuteronomy 31:8 KJV 1900
And the Lord, he it is that doth go before thee; he will be with thee, he will not fail thee, neither forsake thee: fear not, neither be dismayed.

D. Jesus calms our fears!

Matthew 14:26–27 KJV 1900
And when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, It is a spirit; and they cried out for fear. But straightway Jesus spake unto them, saying, Be of good cheer; it is I; be not afraid.

1. Fear DOES NOT come from God!

2 Timothy 1:7 KJV 1900
For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.

a. If fear doesn’t come from God it must come from the enemy. Let’s not abide in the kingdom of the enemy, which is fear!

2. We should be strong and courageous in the Lord, because he is with us wherever we go!

Joshua 1:9 KJV 1900
Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the Lord thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.

E. When we trust the Lord in the storm is when we realize we can walk on water with Him!

Matthew 14:28–31 KJV 1900
And Peter answered him and said, Lord, if it be thou, bid me come unto thee on the water. And he said, Come. And when Peter was come down out of the ship, he walked on the water, to go to Jesus. But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me. And immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and caught him, and said unto him, O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt?

1. When we trust Him with all our heart, is when we decide to lean not to our own understanding!

Proverbs 3:5–6 KJV 1900
Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; And lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, And he shall direct thy paths.

2. Even when I am afraid, I will still trust in Him!

Psalm 56:3–4 KJV 1900
What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee. In God I will praise his word, In God I have put my trust; I will not fear What flesh can do unto me.

F. When we trust Him, He will calm the storm!

Matthew 14:32 KJV 1900
And when they were come into the ship, the wind ceased.

1. Jesus is in the storm calming or people calming business!

Mark 4:39 KJV 1900
And he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm.

2. God rules over the storm and sea!

Psalm 89:9 KJV 1900
Thou rulest the raging of the sea: When the waves thereof arise, thou stillest them.

III. Conclusion

A. We can have peace because of the Holy Ghost!

John 14:26–27 KJV 1900
But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you. Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.

B. The peace of God passes ALL understanding!

Philippians 4:6–7 KJV 1900
Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
C. When our minds are stayed on Him, we can experience PERFECT peace!
Isaiah 26:3 KJV 1900
Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, Whose mind is stayed on thee: Because he trusteth in thee.
