INTRODUCTION: One of my earliest memories is Freedom trail in Boston. 2.5 miles. Sat down and said not going any further.
TENSION: Many of us might be there. I’m not going any further.
10 We have an altar from which those who serve the tent have no right to eat.
have an altar - present tense. An alter is where a sacrifice is made.
serve the tent - tent=tabernacle, those who serve = priests.
no right to eat - The priests would eat from the sacrifices, normally. But we have a higher alter. Our alter is in heaven that we are striving for.
Jesus sacrificed (Hebrews 13:10-11)
Jesus sacrificed (Hebrews 13:10-11)
ILLUSTRATION: story of dropping communion. In reality ,we remember the sacrifice that was made, not make it again. One day we will eat at the alter, in heaven.
11 For the bodies of those animals whose blood is brought into the holy places by the high priest as a sacrifice for sin are burned outside the camp.
for the bodies of those animals whose blood is brought into the holy places - They would sacrifice the animal for the nation, then take that animal and go burn the animal outside the camp.
ILLUSTRATION: camping story - sprinklers on
Outside the camp was unclean - Not sinful, but you would have to go through ceremonial cleanse to come back in the camp.
Inside was holy, outside was unclean. - Inside was a picture of Judiasm, it was clean. To come in you had to clean yourself off.
27 And the bull for the sin offering and the goat for the sin offering, whose blood was brought in to make atonement in the Holy Place, shall be carried outside the camp. Their skin and their flesh and their dung shall be burned up with fire. 28 And he who burns them shall wash his clothes and bathe his body in water, and afterward he may come into the camp.
illustration: washing up before coming back inside the house as a kid. ..literal hose.
and suffered for you (Hebrews 13:12),
and suffered for you (Hebrews 13:12),
12 So Jesus also suffered outside the gate in order to sanctify the people through his own blood.
Jesus also suffered - can talk all day about that (sit and dwell on what that means). Encouragement. Working out and someone else is struggling, vs not having a problem at all. haha
Jesus also suffered outside the gate - Golgatha was outside the city. Where it was unclean.
in order to sanctify - make clean.
Weird order - Jesus, in order to sanctify his people thorugh his blood, also suffered. IT ALL points to Jesus. It always has
cross camp here.
so you should suffer (Hebrews 13:13-14)
so you should suffer (Hebrews 13:13-14)
13 Therefore let us go to him outside the camp and bear the reproach he endured.
Let us go to him outside the camp - strong grammatical
visual here! - walk out door.
bear the reproach -
Let us go outside the camp - WHILE WALKING BACK UP! Chinese rebellion.
14 For here we have no lasting city, but we seek the city that is to come.
A city that remeans - You might say, but my family is there, my comfort and peace is in the camp. Well guess what?you are going to have a new camp!
Seek the city that is to come - IF LIFE IS DIFFICULT, THEN SEEK YOUR REAL HOME
Renting vs owning a home - car rental joke - 11 bucks a day.
and sacrifice for Him (Hebrews 13:15-16).
and sacrifice for Him (Hebrews 13:15-16).
15 Through him then let us continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that acknowledge his name.
This is a true sacrifice, when you are suffering.
We worship Jesus not based on our feeling, but on His worth.
16 Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God.
Share - koinanie - community.
Sacrifice by loving others.
So when you are going through suffering, you keep praising God and draw close to community. Give, before they give to you. Share before they share with you.
CONCLUSION: Every time suffering is mentioned, so is Jesus being with us.
Philippians 1:29
29 For you have been given not only the privilege of trusting in Christ but also the privilege of suffering for him.
Philippians 3:10
10 I want to know Christ and experience the mighty power that raised him from the dead. I want to suffer with him, sharing in his death,
2 Corinthians 1:3-5
3 All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is our merciful Father and the source of all comfort. 4 He comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others. When they are troubled, we will be able to give them the same comfort God has given us. 5 For the more we suffer for Christ, the more God will shower us with his comfort through Christ.
2 Corinthians 4:8-10
8 We are pressed on every side by troubles, but we are not crushed. We are perplexed, but not driven to despair. 9 We are hunted down, but never abandoned by God. We get knocked down, but we are not destroyed. 10 Through suffering, our bodies continue to share in the death of Jesus so that the life of Jesus may also be seen in our bodies.
2 Corinthians 4:17-18
17 For our present troubles are small and won’t last very long. Yet they produce for us a glory that vastly outweighs them and will last forever! 18 So we don’t look at the troubles we can see now; rather, we fix our gaze on things that cannot be seen. For the things we see now will soon be gone, but the things we cannot see will last forever.
1 Peter 4:12-13
12 Dear friends, don’t be surprised at the fiery trials you are going through, as if something strange were happening to you. 13 Instead, be very glad—for these trials make you partners with Christ in his suffering, so that you will have the wonderful joy of seeing his glory when it is revealed to all the world.
1 Peter 5:10
10 In his kindness God called you to share in his eternal glory by means of Christ Jesus. So after you have suffered a little while, he will restore, support, and strengthen you, and he will place you on a firm foundation.
John 16:33
33 I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.”
Romans 8:18
18 Yet what we suffer now is nothing compared to the glory he will reveal to us later.
Romans 8:31-39
31 What shall we say about such wonderful things as these? If God is for us, who can ever be against us? 32 Since he did not spare even his own Son but gave him up for us all, won’t he also give us everything else? 33 Who dares accuse us whom God has chosen for his own? No one—for God himself has given us right standing with himself. 34 Who then will condemn us? No one—for Christ Jesus died for us and was raised to life for us, and he is sitting in the place of honor at God’s right hand, pleading for us.
35 Can anything ever separate us from Christ’s love? Does it mean he no longer loves us if we have trouble or calamity, or are persecuted, or hungry, or destitute, or in danger, or threatened with death? 36 (As the Scriptures say, “For your sake we are killed every day; we are being slaughtered like sheep.”[a]) 37 No, despite all these things, overwhelming victory is ours through Christ, who loved us.
38 And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons,[b] neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love. 39 No power in the sky above or in the earth below—indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord.
29 For it has been granted to you that for the sake of Christ you should not only believe in him but also suffer for his sake, 30 engaged in the same conflict that you saw I had and now hear that I still have.
17 For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, 18 as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal.
Saying right before that:
14 knowing that he who raised the Lord Jesus will raise us also with Jesus and bring us with you into his presence.
16 The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, 17 and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him.
18 For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us.
5 For as we share abundantly in Christ’s sufferings, so through Christ we share abundantly in comfort too.
13 But rejoice insofar as you share Christ’s sufferings, that you may also rejoice and be glad when his glory is revealed. 14 If you are insulted for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the Spirit of glory and of God rests upon you.
10 And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you.
