I AM WHO I AM

Genesis 1:1 NKJV
1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.
Act accordingly:
Now probably the most debated statement since the begging of time
Who or what did it
Atheist, some scientist
Where did God come from
How did we get here?
The BIG BANG
Where did it come from?
Todays message is not to layout the creation of the Universe but rather reveal the Creator
Who are we talking about?
If I went to Winco asked people who God is, there would be very different answers
Gallup Polls:
Most recently, Gallup found 81% of Americans expressing belief when asked the simple question, "Do you believe in God?" This was down from 87% in 2017 and a record low for this question first asked in 1944, when 96% believed. It reached a high of 98% in the 1950s and 1960s.
Other Gallup questions asked most recently in 2016 and 2017 offered more response options than a simple "yes" or "no," and found a lower percentage -- 10 to 25 points lower -- expressing a belief in God.
In 2016, 79% of U.S. adults said God is "something [they] believe in"; 10% said it was "something [they're] not sure about"; and 11% said they didn't believe in God.In 2017, Gallup found belief in God was even lower when confining it to those who are "convinced" God exists.
In that poll, 64% of U.S. adults expressed certainty about the existence of God; 21% said God probably exists, but they have doubts; 6% said God probably doesn't exist; and 7% were convinced God doesn't exist.
Psalm 9:10 NKJV
10 And those who know Your name will put their trust in You; For You, Lord, have not forsaken those who seek You.
Starting a Series on the Names of God
Names now vs. Names then:
When we pick names for our kids
Toms on the boat
We don’t have the power or ability to make the person fit the name
When he picks a name
Abraham: Father of many
Isaac: laughter
Jacob: supplanter
Changed to Isreal: wrestles with God
But when he picks a name for himself we should listen to what he’s indicating
There is a lot of interpretations for the word God in language
Depending on culture, religion, upbringing, denomination, inter denomination even, there is different interpretations of who God is
Over the last 30-50 years more immigration being a more and people just overall turning from Christianity
We are still predominately a christian nation but
Becoming more of a polytheistic society:
I believe its very important we know just who were are referring to when we are talking about God
People are often ignorant of who God is
OR have been taught fallacies of his nature and his being
It’s not only important for us to understand not only to understand who were talking about but also be able to communicate that affectively
Over the next few months we are going to unpack the names of God
But also the character of the God we serve
This is going to be theology 101 of who God is
Genesis 1:1 NKJV
1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.
The word God there is the Word Elohim:
The term "Elohim" means “supreme one” or “mighty one.”
It is not only used of the one true God but is also used on occasion to refer to human rulers, judges, and even angels
Elohim is different than elohim in the
Elohim is used 2,750 times in Bible
Depending on capitalization and context
IN the beginning “god” elohim vs Elohim God
God or god created the heavens and the earth
The most used and most important word for God is YAHWEY
More than 6800 times
The Tetragrammaton is YHWY
Read from right to left
Not a great example
If a small child sees a furry animal he may very well refer to it as a puppy dog,
but as he matures he is able to clearly differentiate between a puppy dog and a kitty.
as a child matures it might call the dog a specific breed—like a beagle.
And if the puppy comes to live in the child’s home what once was ‘puppy dog’ will now become ‘my beagle’ or give it name
God (elohim) from an abstract name or idea to what we know him as his name YHWH
When you see the word LORD capitalized in your Bible the Translation is Yahweh
Here’s the first mention of this name in scripture
Exodus 3:13–15 NKJV
13 Then Moses said to God, “Indeed, when I come to the children of Israel and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they say to me, ‘What is His name?’ what shall I say to them?” 14 And God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM.” And He said, “Thus you shall say to the children of Israel, ‘I AM has sent me to you.’ ” 15 Moreover God said to Moses, “Thus you shall say to the children of Israel: ‘The Lord God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you. This is My name forever, and this is My memorial to all generations.’
IN vs 14 He says I AM WHO I AM
14 I AM HAS SENT ME
Yahweh . . . has sent me to you . . . this is my name forever.
I AM- Establishes the Eternal Aseity of God:
The mode of being of that which is underived from anything else; independent existence; existence by self-origination.
Being self-derived, in contrast to being derived from or dependent on another; being self-existent, having independent existence.
He operates above, apart from time but still has the ability to operate within it
Only someone operating outside of physics
Time Space and Matter can be created but they had to come into existence simultaneously(continuum)
If you had matter without space where would you put it?
If you had space with out time when would you put it?
You cannot have time, space or matter independently
Genesis 1:1 NKJV
1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.
Beginning gives us time
Heavens gives us space
Earth Matter
A trinity if you will, He’s the trinity of Trinities
Revelation 1:8 NKJV
8 “I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End,” says the Lord, “who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.”
These will sound very elementary to some of you but it’s important that we lay these ground rules before we go any further
1. He exists
God is there
The sad thing is that most people live there lives like its not true
People aren’t hardly held accountable for their actions anymore
Cause people are living “their truths”
Suppose your most favorite president invited you over to the White House
You get invited to the green room and your favorite president is sitting by the fire place
you don’t acknowledge him
You don’t greet him
you don’t make eye contact with him
you don’t honor him or thank him
you just go about doing what you want to do there
a reporter comes over to you
asks you if you believe in the existence of the president
You say of course you do
You might even acknowledge that your in his house and the food came from his kitchen
But you never acknowledge him with your thanks
you don’t speak to him
You don’t even tell him that you like him
Practically speaking you act as if you do not believe he exists.
You ignore him. He has no place in the affections of your heart.
His gifts, not himself, are the center of your attention
A lot of people live this way
Enjoying the gifts of God and not HIMself
Act as if God exists and that your thankful to be around Him
2. HE HAS A NAME
He’s not energy
He’s not Nature
He’s not a psychedelic experience
He’s not Chakras
GOD’S name is Yahweh
This personifies him and gives him character
Gives him a face
Acts 17:23 NKJV
23 for as I was passing through and considering the objects of your worship, I even found an altar with this inscription: TO THE UNKNOWN GOD Therefore, the One whom you worship without knowing, Him I proclaim to you:
Many people even Christians might be proclaiming this or that and not knowing YHWY
People are talking about God in ways that are untrue
This God is UNKNOWN to me because we’re not speaking about the same person
He Reigns and rules on a throne
Ultimately we will answer to Him when we die
The very fact that he has a name makes him Personal
He’s a personal God
He cares about you and what your going through
When he gave Moses a name He gave him access to call on Him
Exodus 3:7–10 NKJV
7 And the Lord said: “I have surely seen the oppression of My people who are in Egypt, and have heard their cry because of their taskmasters, for I know their sorrows. 8 So I have come down to deliver them out of the hand of the Egyptians, and to bring them up from that land to a good and large land, to a land flowing with milk and honey, to the place of the Canaanites and the Hittites and the Amorites and the Perizzites and the Hivites and the Jebusites. 9 Now therefore, behold, the cry of the children of Israel has come to Me, and I have also seen the oppression with which the Egyptians oppress them. 10 Come now, therefore, and I will send you to Pharaoh that you may bring My people, the children of Israel, out of Egypt.”
2 Peter 3:9 NKJV
9 The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.
