Turn in your Bibles to Romans 12.
One of the ministries that I’ve been blessed to lead here at Connection Church Athens is the worship ministry. Over the years of preparing to be a worship pastor, I have spent a lot of time just learning what worship is. Today, I want to talk with y’all about what I’ve learned about worship.
Let’s start by talking about two ideas that we’ve come to believe about worship that aren’t really true.
1. Worship is a personal experience
Do y’all know what Passion City Church is? It’s a megachurch in Atlanta that has multiple campuses with many many members. They put on this conference in January geared towards young adults called the Passion Conference. I went to this conference for the first time this past January and the one thing I remember most was the time of worship we had. I remember being in the middle of a song and looking around the packed out State Farm Arena at all the voices praising God and one of my first thoughts was, “Man this is a cool experience.”
Now don’t get me wrong, that was a really cool experience, but I don’t think I had the right mindset in that moment. I was thinking, “Man I’m getting a lot out of this.” instead of, “Man look at how much glory is being brought to God right now.” I mean there were tens of thousands of people there all praising God! And I was thinking about myself!
2. Worship is just praising God with songs
I wish Christians didn’t refer to our time of praising God through song as worship. Now before I get kicked out of the church, let me clarify what I just said. When we praise God through song, that is 100% worshipping God. But as we’re about to learn today, that’s not the only way we worship God. In fact, while it is important, it’s not as important as what we’re discussing today.
So now that I’ve confused you and possibly put my job in jeopardy, let’s read some scripture...
Romans 12:1–8 NLT
1 And so, dear brothers and sisters, I plead with you to give your bodies to God because of all he has done for you. Let them be a living and holy sacrifice—the kind he will find acceptable. This is truly the way to worship him. 2 Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect. 3 Because of the privilege and authority God has given me, I give each of you this warning: Don’t think you are better than you really are. Be honest in your evaluation of yourselves, measuring yourselves by the faith God has given us. 4 Just as our bodies have many parts and each part has a special function, 5 so it is with Christ’s body. We are many parts of one body, and we all belong to each other. 6 In his grace, God has given us different gifts for doing certain things well. So if God has given you the ability to prophesy, speak out with as much faith as God has given you. 7 If your gift is serving others, serve them well. If you are a teacher, teach well. 8 If your gift is to encourage others, be encouraging. If it is giving, give generously. If God has given you leadership ability, take the responsibility seriously. And if you have a gift for showing kindness to others, do it gladly.
