Thankful Acts 2:37-47
Thankful Acts 2:37-47
After Bro Josh’s sermons over the last 2 nights, our minds and hearts should be directed to the King and us being found as His citizens!
For a few weeks a little bud has been growing in my heart about the heart of revival!
There are many older stories about revival and some newer, but what is this time for?
Renewal.....maybe we have gotten caught up in worldly things and lost our sight and passion?
Maybe we have been busy about God’s business and just have gotten overloaded and tired and weak and you just need to be fed!
Maybe you have been just coming to church and you need to be lit on fire!
Sidenote: I don’t like to use the word fire when speaking of revival or any coming together, because fire in Scripture refers to God’s judgement......better said: “You need the lights turned on”
Let’s go down memory lane or let’s look at history!
Acts 2:37-47........
Peter has just delivered a powerful sermon, just after receiving the Holy Spirit!
This sermon caused a stir.......so much the crowd responded with “hey guys....what shall we do?”
.Acts 2:22-24............
Then he put a nail in the coffin....Acts 2:36........That stimulated their response!
What shall we do? This reminds me of a famous sermon by Jonathan Edwards “Sinners In The Hands Of An Angry God”
It was during what was called “The Great Awakening”
Jonathan Edwards preached about God’s wrath on unbelievers
One preacher’s account of this: Reverend Stephen Williams was in attendance at the Enfield sermon, with his diary entry for that day containing the following account of the congregation's reactions during and after the sermon:
[B]efore the sermon was done there was a great moaning and crying out through the whole house — "What shall I do to be saved?" "Oh, I am going to hell!" "Oh what shall I do for a Christ?" and so forth — so that the minister was obliged to desist. [The] shrieks and cries were piercing and amazing. After some time of waiting, the congregation were still, so that a prayer was made by Mr. Wheelock, and after that we descended from the pulpit and discoursed with the people, some in one place and some in another. And amazing and astonishing: the power [of] God was seen and several souls were hopefully wrought upon that night, and oh the cheerfulness and pleasantness of their countenances that received comfort. Oh that God would strengthen and confirm [their new faith]! We sang a hymn and prayed, and dispersed the assembly.
This was the early church’s response to Peter’s sermon!
Peter said Repent....Josh declared most rightly Monday night....The King has come....repent.....
For the remission of sins! 2 Corinthians 7:10 “For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death.”
This sincere repentance, not saying a bunch of words, but a broken heart over our sin against God!
Isaiah 66:2 “For all those things hath mine hand made, And all those things have been, saith the Lord: But to this man will I look, Even to him that is poor and of a contrite spirit, And trembleth at my word.”
A recognition that we are fallen and this world most definitely is fallen and a return to God the only way out of destruction!
So, these people heeded this call, sincerely........3000 souls were added, bringing the number to 3120.
Now, this is the meat of what we are doing or should be doing, I actually don’t care about how the ages and culture changes, I believe the early church in Acts 2 is the model church!
I am not good at it, but I believe it is the model! Because God does not change, we do!
This church went from believing in Christ, immersing themselves in Jesus Christ, to practicing it!
BUT.........Their sincerity didn’t change that battle with the flesh....Bro Josh read last night that the Spirit and the flesh are contrary with one another! Gal. 5
There is a battle raging within!
It also didn’t change the hatred that the world and the flesh has of Christ!
Because He testifies against us and the world!
All that Bro Josh spoke about last night and being a citizen of the Kingdom, how are we all doing on those things?
Not very good are we?
Put this in these folks perspective......Some of these were Jews and they knew the penalties of all the violations of the law and what all had to be done to cleanse themselves.
It had to be repeated every year!
Their response to Peter’s sermon and what they already knew was to repent and believe in Jesus Christ for the remission of their sin!
Hebrews 10:10 “By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.”
Hebrews 10:12 “But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God;”
