8-Redeems (pages 73-81)

God is working to bring about the redemption of His people.
How do we use the word redeem today?
How would you explain the word as it applies to God’s work in salvation?
Understanding the Context
Jer. 30:1-33:26
As you read Jeremiah Jer. 33:23-34, look for words and phrases that demonstrate God’s commitment to redeem and restore His people.
1-Blessings Promised (Jer. 31:23-26)
How did Jeremiah identify God in verse 23?
How does a deeper understanding of who God is facilitate greater trust in Him?
Why would the promise of God’s presence and provision bring joy to Jeremiah?
2-Restoration Sought (Jer. 31:27-30)
What differences does it make that God’s watching over His people is not passive but active?
How have you experienced God’s watching over you?
How does knowing God watches over His people bring security and comfort?
3-Covenant Established (Jer. 31:31-34)
How does both the old covenant and the new convenant point to the need for a Savior?
Key Doctrine: Salvation
Regeneration, or the new birth, is a work of God’s grace whereby believers become new creatures in Christ Jesus. (See Romans 5:8-10; 1 Peter 1:3-5)
Bible Skill: Use other Scripture to help understand a Bible passage.
Read aloud Jeremiah 31:31-34.
Also read Luke 22:20 and Hebrews 8:7-13, which reference Jeremiah’s words.
How do the New Testament passages illuminate Jeremiah’s meaning?
Ask the Lord to lay on your heart people who need to experience God’s redemption; pray for them and consider how you might share God’s love with them.
Apply the Text
The promise of restoration should bring believers peace and pleasure.
God’s attention to His people gives them a reason for hope.
God will give a new heart to those who turn to Him in repentance.
Discuss as a group why Jeremiah’s description of the new covenant is good news today.
How does it point to the gospel?
Consider the phrase “from the least to the greatest” in verse 34 and identify people who need to hear this good news.
Begin to pray for those individuals.
