The Sign of Authority- Week 2
John 5:18-29
ILL- Respecting the Judge- They've been given authority to give justice.
-My first ticket. - Going before the judge who was dating aunt and a friend of my dad’s.
Retell story (1-18)- lame man healed at Bethesda. Jesus heals on the Sabbath and commands the man to "take up his bed and walk."
John 5:18–29 ESV
18 This was why the Jews were seeking all the more to kill him, because not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God. 19 So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of his own accord, but only what he sees the Father doing. For whatever the Father does, that the Son does likewise. 20 For the Father loves the Son and shows him all that he himself is doing. And greater works than these will he show him, so that you may marvel. 21 For as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, so also the Son gives life to whom he will. 22 For the Father judges no one, but has given all judgment to the Son, 23 that all may honor the Son, just as they honor the Father. Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent him. 24 Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life. 25 “Truly, truly, I say to you, an hour is coming, and is now here, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live. 26 For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son also to have life in himself. 27 And he has given him authority to execute judgment, because he is the Son of Man. 28 Do not marvel at this, for an hour is coming when all who are in the tombs will hear his voice 29 and come out, those who have done good to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil to the resurrection of judgment.
vs 18- set up
John 5:18 ESV
18 This was why the Jews were seeking all the more to kill him, because not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God.
Jesus is both the divine Son of God and the humble Messenger of God. Both aspects must be balanced when we try to understand who Jesus is.
"Truly Truly" - statements - Amen -- emphasis statements- set to explain verse 18.
Why does Jesus heal on the Sabbath? To show authority!

3 Reasons Jesus Has Authority

1. The Father and Son are One (19-23)

(four gar (because) statements to explain)

4 Ways The Son and the Father Are One

A. The Father is the Model for the Son (19)

John 5:19 ESV
19 So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of his own accord, but only what he sees the Father doing. For whatever the Father does, that the Son does likewise.
To have a problem with Jesus is to have a problem with God.
"so you may marvel"- because you see things only God can do.

B. The Father Loves the Son (20)

John 5:20 ESV
20 For the Father loves the Son and shows him all that he himself is doing. And greater works than these will he show him, so that you may marvel.
The gift of Jesus is a huge sacrifice.
God is not the mean father using his son to get what he wants.
He truly loves his son.

C. The Father Gives Life Through the Son

John 5:21 ESV
21 For as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, so also the Son gives life to whom he will.
John 3:16 ESV
16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.

D. The Father Provides Honor in the Son (through judgment)

John 5:22–23 ESV
22 For the Father judges no one, but has given all judgment to the Son, 23 that all may honor the Son, just as they honor the Father. Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent him.
Jesus is given the authority to judge so that he will be honored the same as the Father.
Failure to respect Jesus is a failure to respect the Father.

2. The Son Provides Life (24)

John 5:24 ESV
24 Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life.
He is the judge but the judgment is based on verse 24
Spiritual life- being born again (Nicodemus and Samaritan Woman at well)
John 3:16–17 ESV
16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.
"passed from death to life"
We are all dead.
We must receive life. (Born again)

3. The Son Provides Resurrection (25-29)

John 5:25–29 ESV
25 “Truly, truly, I say to you, an hour is coming, and is now here, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live. 26 For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son also to have life in himself. 27 And he has given him authority to execute judgment, because he is the Son of Man. 28 Do not marvel at this, for an hour is coming when all who are in the tombs will hear his voice 29 and come out, those who have done good to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil to the resurrection of judgment.
The connection of spiritual life and physical life.
"dead" in vs 25 is the Greek word "nekros" which means dead body.- not a spiritual death.
Jesus has power over physical death the same as he has power over spiritual death.
vs 25 refers to individuals he calls from the grave (Lazarus for example)
however- a day is coming when he will call all dead to life.
1 Thessalonians 4:13–18 ESV
13 But we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, about those who are asleep, that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope. 14 For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so, through Jesus, God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep. 15 For this we declare to you by a word from the Lord, that we who are alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will not precede those who have fallen asleep. 16 For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the sound of the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. 17 Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we will always be with the Lord. 18 Therefore encourage one another with these words.
Then the lost will be resurrected for the purpose of judgment at the end of the 1000 year reign of Christ.
Revelation 20:11–15 ESV
11 Then I saw a great white throne and him who was seated on it. From his presence earth and sky fled away, and no place was found for them. 12 And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Then another book was opened, which is the book of life. And the dead were judged by what was written in the books, according to what they had done. 13 And the sea gave up the dead who were in it, Death and Hades gave up the dead who were in them, and they were judged, each one of them, according to what they had done. 14 Then Death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire. 15 And if anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.
John 5:29 ESV
29 and come out, those who have done good to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil to the resurrection of judgment.
“According to what you have done”
Good to life, bad to death.
Good only comes from a changed life.
Our righteousness is like filthy rags.
Abide in Christ and you bear fruit.
True believers bear fruit.
Changed life.
CONCLUSION

Have you made Jesus the authority in your life?
