The Book of Colossians

The circumstance which prompted the writing of Colossians seemed to be the special heresy that arose there. This

Paul sought to show the deity and supremacy of Christ in the face of the Colossian heresy
Or Gnosticism
This is why Paul called forth one of the greatest declarations of Christ’s deity found anywhere in Scripture (1:15–16; 2:9).
Colossians 2:9 ESV
For in him the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily,
Colossians 1:9 ESV
And so, from the day we heard, we have not ceased to pray for you, asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of his will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding,
Look at Pauls prayer list to the Colossian church
God fill them with the knowledge of your will.
Give them spiritual wisdom and understanding.
Colossians 1:10 ESV
so as to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him: bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God;
I’m praying that they will walk in a manner worthy of the Lord!
To walk (behavior) v. — to live or behave in a specified manner.

A genuine knowledge of Christ reveals itself in transformed character

I’m praying that there behavior will be fully pleasing to God
“Fully Pleasing to Him”
Pleasing: satisfaction n. — the trait delightfully yielding to the will of another person for their happiness.

The aim of believers in all their worthy conduct should be to please Him in every way, to anticipate and do His wishes in every aspect of life

(Paul’s prayer is…) A God pleasing Life:
#1 Productive
“Bearing fruit in every good work”
#2 Knowledge is Power
“Increasing in the Knowledge of God”
Increasing: to grow v. — to become larger, greater, or bigger.
Knowledge: cognitive content (personal) n. — cognitive content perhaps that emphasizes a personal acquaintance with, or a recognition of the truth of, the content.
Colossians 1:11 ESV
being strengthened with all power, according to his glorious might, for all endurance and patience with joy;
#3 Spiritual strength
“Being strengthened with all power, according to his glorious might, for all endurance and patience with joy”
Strengthened: to be enabled v. — to be or become rendered (more) capable or able for some task.
The Holy Sprit is more than a feeling!
We are strengthened for 1) Endurance
Endurance: steadfast endurance n. — the power to withstand hardship or stress; especially the inward fortitude necessary.
Patience n. — patient endurance of pain or unhappiness.
Joy (emotion) n. — the emotion of great happiness and pleasure.
My emotional state is pleasing to God!
#4 Expressive
Colossians 1:12 ESV
giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in light.
“Giving thanks to the Father”
Giving Thanks: to thank v. — to express gratitude or show appreciation to (someone).
Why should I be thankful?
The Father qualified me!
Qualified: to qualify (someone) v. — to make fit, prepared, or adequate.
I’m qualified to share in the inheritance of the saints in light!

the kingdom treasures that belong to believers

The only way I can be qualified, I have to be delivered!
Colossians 1:13 ESV
He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son,
Delivered: to rescue v. — to free from harm or evil, and in some cases from imprisonment.
Domain of darkness…
and
“Transferred us”
to transfer (move) v. — to move (something) from one place or sphere to another.
“To the kingdom of his beloved Son”
Through Christ we were brought from a rebel kingdom and placed under the sovereignty of our rightful King.
How was I delivered?
Colossians 1:14 ESV
in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

“Redemption” (apolytrōsin) means “to rescue by ransom”

Ransom: obtain the release of (a prisoner) by making a payment demanded.
Redemption is the forgiveness of sins!
forgiveness (absolution) n. — a formal release from an obligation or debt; especially understood of the debt of sin.
Jesus paid my debt! So I could be
Qualified
Delivered
and Transferred.....
