The Wisdom and Power of God

1 Corinthians 1:18-25KJV

18 For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God. 19 For it is written, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and will bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent. 20 Where is the wise? where is the scribe? where is the disputer of this world? hath not God made foolish the wisdom of this world? 21 For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe. 22 For the Jews require a sign, and the Greeks seek after wisdom: 23 But we preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews a stumblingblock, and unto the Greeks foolishness; 24 But unto them which are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God. 25 Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men; and the weakness of God is stronger than men.

Today’s generation is one of either a people searching for signs and wonders, or as is the most a generation of people looking for “wisdom”  “science, futurism, computers.

No matter what, they seek for proof before they will believe anything and this will be their downfall!

1.   Wisdom and worldly knowledge won’t save

a. Believing in God!

Mark 16:16KJV

16 He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.

b.  Not trusting in the wisdom of the world!

1 Corinthians 3:19KJV

19 For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, He taketh the wise in their own craftiness.

c. Verse 19 “it is written”

2.   Seeking signs, looking for magic won’t save

a.       What does it take for some to believe?

John 4:48KJV

48 Then said Jesus unto him, Except ye see signs and wonders, ye will not believe.

b.      There are too many looking for some “faith healer” some person (healing is real miracles are real but don’t look for proof) seek for Jesus!

Luke 17:20-21KJV

20 And when he was demanded of the Pharisees, when the kingdom of God should come, he answered them and said, The kingdom of God cometh not with observation: 21 Neither shall they say, Lo here! or, lo there! for, behold, the kingdom of God is within you.

c.       We are a generation of people always wanting to learn but the learning never gets us anywhere

2 Timothy 3:7KJV

7 Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.
We have become a people always learning but never able to find time to come to Jesus! Our nation put men on the moon but we don’t seek God we seek everything and nothing!

3.   We are saved by grace through faith!

Ephesians 2:8-9KJV

8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: 9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.

Evangelist D. L. Moody said that his “greatest mistake” happened on October 8, 1871, On that night in Chicago, he preached to one of the largest crowds of his career. His message was about the Lord’s trial and was based on Pilate’s question, “What shall I do then with Jesus?” (Mt. 27:22).

As Moody concluded, he said, “I wish you would seriously consider this subject, for next Sunday we will speak about the Cross, and at that time I’ll inquire, “What will YOU do with Jesus?”” Ira Sankey then sang the closing hymn, which included the lines, “Today the Savior calls; for refuge fly. The storm of justice falls, and death is nigh.”

But the hymn was never finished, for while Sankey was singing, there was the rush and roar of fire engines on the street outside. That was the night of the great Chicago fire which almost destroyed the whole city. And before the next day, Chicago lay in ashes. “I have never since dared,” said Moody, “to give an audience a week to think of their salvation.”
