Intro

Teaching about worship today at Students
Worship is something that is a very niche topic because I think for a lot of us we think of worship only in music
At REVO we have the worship team/band
Worship leaders
Production serves with worship
Yet to box worship of God into just solely music is missing the very point of worship
Worship is ascribing or giving God glory!
1 Corinthians tells us
1 Corinthians 10:31 ESV
31 So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.
We can ascribe and give God glory everywhere we are, and in ever circumstance
I found this cool quote by A.W. Tozer that said:
28  If you cannot worship the Lord in the midst of your responsibilities on Monday, it is not very likely that you were worshiping on Sunday!
A. W. Tozer
Whatever Happened to Worship? (20th century)
A. W. Tozer
So I want to give you six everyday ways you can worship God!
None of these are ground breaking, but it’ll be nice to pray through them as a team

Admire nature

The first way we can worship every day is by:
Admiring God’s glory in nature
We often times look for God in the big and mighty
We want to see God show up and move in the big ways, yet do you ever stop to think - God is moving all the time?
He is moving in the sunrises and sunsets
He is moving in the shimmering of raindrops that are caught in spiderwebs
You can see God and his majesty all over the small things
Proverbs puts it this way
Proverbs 30:24–28 ESV
24 Four things on earth are small, but they are exceedingly wise: 25 the ants are a people not strong, yet they provide their food in the summer; 26 the rock badgers are a people not mighty, yet they make their homes in the cliffs; 27 the locusts have no king, yet all of them march in rank; 28 the lizard you can take in your hands, yet it is in kings’ palaces.
God created everything we see, and we can worship Him by admiring His creation and giving Him glory
Pray that we would worship God through admiring His creation

Silence

The second way is this:
Dedicate a sacrifice of silence to the Lord
We fast every season during Lent - but what about the rest of the time?
One way you can worship God is by setting aside time each day you are quiet and waiting on the Lord
No reading, no music, just silence listening
God speaks in a still small voice, to hear Him, you must listen for Him
Isaiah 30:15 ESV
15 For thus said the Lord God, the Holy One of Israel, “In returning and rest you shall be saved; in quietness and in trust shall be your strength.” But you were unwilling,
1 Kings 19:12 ESV
12 And after the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire the sound of a low whisper.
We can worship God by sacrificing some extra sleep, time on the TV/cell phone, or by sacrificing our radio/podcast for silence listening for Him
Pray that we would sacrifice for silence to better hear God and worship Him

Read aloud

The next way is:
Read the Bible out loud
Read the Bible out loud - specifically in your quiet time
This may sound crazy, but let me break it down for you
We tend to remember more fully what we speak out loud
Reading out loud will keep your mind from wondering/getting distracted
Reading out loud will help you to pick out important phrases/words
Reading God’s word out loud reminds us of the power of God and will give you courage to obey
Romans tells us this
Romans 10:9–10 ESV
9 because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved.
Pray that the next quiet time we have, we spend it reading aloud

Memorize Scripture

The next way is:
Memorize the Bible
Memorizing the Bible sounds like such a daunting task
It can feel impossible to start, but it is something that can make a huge impact on your life
Memorizing the Bible can be as simple as one verse a week, or as complex as striving to memorize entire chapters/books
But what I have found personally is when I memorize the Bible I am constantly being reminded of those verses when times are hard
Memorizing can help you when talking to a non-believer
It can help you bless other believers
And as Psalm 119:11 says
Psalm 119:11 ESV
11 I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.
Pray that Scripture memory would become a passion project

Songs

The fifth way is:
Sing songs of praise
The music that you listen to can be all the difference between worshiping God, and worshiping Satan
It’s something I am coming to terms with more and more
I personally was a major secular rap fanatic - lil wayne, Drake, J Cole, Kendrick Lamar just to name a few
But what I have realized now is the music you listen to impacts your thoughts, speech and motives
It doesn’t have to be all worship music, hillsong, and elevation, but it should all be praising the name of Jesus
Listen to what the Psalms say
Psalm 33:3 ESV
3 Sing to him a new song; play skillfully on the strings, with loud shouts.
Pray that our taste in music would change

Love

The last way to worship God everyday is:
Love others
Loving others can look like a lot of different things
It can be bending over backwards to help someone in crisis
But I can also be just giving someone a phone call and asking how they are doing
Loving someone can be cleaning the bathroom or doing the dishes for your spouse
Love can be so many things
But to worship God we should be loving others
Listen to how Jesus put it
Matthew 25:40 ESV
40 And the King will answer them, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.’
Pray that love would be a mark of our life
Show love because God is love
Because God is love, you should worship God by showing love
We talked about this passage last week with serving - you are to love other because you love God
Matthew 22:37–40 ESV
37 And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. 38 This is the great and first commandment. 39 And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. 40 On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.”
We are to show love to others because God is love
We are to show the same love that God shows us
What is the love that God shows us?
It’s self-sacrificial
It’s sending Jesus to die for our sins
It’s forgiving us even when we continually sin
That’s the love we are meant to show to others
Worshiping God because of His love looks like us showing that same love to others
This comes from us serving like we said last week
This also come from us telling others about Jesus and how he died for our sins - because love is seeking the greatest good for the object being loved
We are to worship through love
Trust God’s plan, since God is in control
God is in control of all things, He is sovereign
That means He orchestrates everything
Yet some things will still happen that we don’t understand
How do we worship God in his sovereignty?
Romans 8:28 ESV
28 And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.
Trust that God has a plan!
Trust that even when we don’t understand it, Romans tells us that God is working it all out for our good
Proverbs 19:21 ESV
21 Many are the plans in the mind of a man, but it is the purpose of the Lord that will stand.
We will have many different things we will think is better, but God’s purpose is the only one that will prevail
It is the only one that matters
It is what will happen
To worship God in His sovereignty is to understand that He is in control, and to trust Him when we don’t understand
Be honest because God is truth
Since God is truth and cannot lie, we are called to be honest and upright
Ephesians 6:14 ESV
14 Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness,
We are to put on the belt of truth, being honest with everyone
In the context of the armor of God it is what holds up the rest of the armor
Our speech and conduct is what shows people if we are trustworthy
Matthew 5:37 ESV
37 Let what you say be simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’; anything more than this comes from evil.
Jesus in Matthew 5 tells us that our answers should be yes or no
That we shouldn’t be inconsistent, but instead be honest about what we can and cannot do
Don’t be dishonest with people, but instead worship God with your honesty
Just as God doesn’t lie, so we shouldn’t lie
1 Peter 1:15–16 ESV
15 but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, 16 since it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.”
Peter tells us we are to be Holy just as God is holy
Meaning we are to be honest and upright, since God is honest and upright
We are meant to be truth tellers in all things
Worshiping God for His truth looks like us walking in the same truth

Conclusion

There are so many ways to worship God
Worshiping God is all about admiring who He is, and giving Him glory
You can worship by singing, by reading your Bible, by praying.
You can worship by how you interact with others
Worship can be telling the truth, helping your parents, staying calm in crisis
Worship can be admiring the beauty that God gave us in nature
Worship can be so many different things, don’t box it into just worship music
We are called to worship God in all things!
1 Corinthians 10:31 ESV
31 So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.
