Jesus goes up into a mountain, and sits downs. His disciples come unto Him, and Jesus starts preaching His longest sermon recorded. It is also His most famous. Our theme is “Be a Disciple”. Now one thing that being a disciple means is you live differently from the World. WIth the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus is challenging what the disciples believe. The disciples had certain beliefs ingrained in this Jewish culture, and Jesus is letting them know, that following Him is way different. Following Jesus goes against the flow of what society teachesIt easy to just go with the flow. When you sand wood, you go with the grain to keep the face. If you go against the grain you scratch it. Christianity goes against the grain. It is very different then the way of this world. The Sermon on the Mount goes through many different situations where you think one way, but Jesus tells you to think another way. Now it might be easier to do what the world wants, to do what the flesh wants. It can be uncomfortable to You need to be like salmon. Salon are born in freshwater, but live their lives in the ocean. When it is time for them to lay eggs. They go back to their home and they swim against the stream. We need to swim against the stream of this world. These first verses are known as the Beatitudes. These start with the word Blessed which means happy. When you first look at the Beatitudes. They seem like a contradiction. But God’s Ways are not ours.
Isaiah 55:6–9 “Seek ye the Lord while he may be found, Call ye upon him while he is near: Let the wicked forsake his way, And the unrighteous man his thoughts: And let him return unto the Lord, and he will have mercy upon him; And to our God, for he will abundantly pardon. For my thoughts are not your thoughts, Neither are your ways my ways, saith the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, So are my ways higher than your ways, And my thoughts than your thoughts.”
As the heavens are higher than the earth, God’s ways are higher than yours. If the stratosphere is 66000 feet from earth. If you are 6 feet tall, it is 11,000 times you. Which means God’s ways are at least 11,000 times higher than yours.
It is reasonable to go the way of the Lord. Romans 12:1–2 “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.” It is reasonable to be a living sacrifice and not be conformed to this world because of the therefore, which represents 11 chapters of theology of how we are all sinners, but God loves us, and sent His Son to die for us. Which way are you going?
