I felt redirected to a different topic after some conversations I had this week…
Prophecy: A positive and negative example
Positive: Batman
Negative: 2020 Election Predictions
Every Christian can be used by God in supernatural ways to build others up.
Two Questions: What do we need to know? What should we do with this knowledge?

Body

What do we need to know?

Prophecy is sharing God’s words with others in the power of the Spirit to build them up. (1 Cor 14:2-3)
1 Corinthians 14:2–3 ESV
2 For one who speaks in a tongue speaks not to men but to God; for no one understands him, but he utters mysteries in the Spirit. 3 On the other hand, the one who prophesies speaks to people for their upbuilding and encouragement and consolation.
Prophecy can include...
A call to repent (Matt 3:1-2; John the Baptizer)
Matthew 3:1–3 ESV
1 In those days John the Baptist came preaching in the wilderness of Judea, 2 “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” 3 For this is he who was spoken of by the prophet Isaiah when he said, “The voice of one crying in the wilderness: ‘Prepare the way of the Lord; make his paths straight.’ ”
A call to action (Acts 13:2; “Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul…”)
Acts 13:2 ESV
2 While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, “Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.”
Foretelling future events (Acts 11:27-28; Agabus predicted the famine in Jerusalem)
Acts 11:27–28 ESV
27 Now in these days prophets came down from Jerusalem to Antioch. 28 And one of them named Agabus stood up and foretold by the Spirit that there would be a great famine over all the world (this took place in the days of Claudius).
Speaking a blessing over others (Gen 48-49; Jacob’s blessing)
Strengthening, encouraging, and comforting others (1 Cor 14:3)
1 Corinthians 14:3 ESV
3 On the other hand, the one who prophesies speaks to people for their upbuilding and encouragement and consolation.
Prophecy must be tested. (1 John 4:1)
1 John 4:1 ESV
1 Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world.
Prophecy from the Holy Spirit always leads to a confession of Jesus. (1 John 4:2-3; 1 Cor 12:3)
1 John 4:2–3 ESV
2 By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, 3 and every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you heard was coming and now is in the world already.
1 Corinthians 12:3 ESV
3 Therefore I want you to understand that no one speaking in the Spirit of God ever says “Jesus is accursed!” and no one can say “Jesus is Lord” except in the Holy Spirit.
Prophecy from the Holy Spirit never contradicts Scripture. (Acts 17:11)
Acts 17:10–11 ESV
10 The brothers immediately sent Paul and Silas away by night to Berea, and when they arrived they went into the Jewish synagogue. 11 Now these Jews were more noble than those in Thessalonica; they received the word with all eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see if these things were so.

What should we do with this knowledge?

We should ask God to empower us to build each other up by speaking God’s words to one another. (1 Cor 14:1, 39)
1 Corinthians 14:1 ESV
1 Pursue love, and earnestly desire the spiritual gifts, especially that you may prophesy.
1 Corinthians 14:39 ESV
39 So, my brothers, earnestly desire to prophesy, and do not forbid speaking in tongues.
We should practice hearing and sharing God’s words for others. Remember, every Christian can be used by God in supernatural ways to build others up.
What if I don’t hear anything?
How do I know if what I hear is from God?
Share with humility…

Conclusion: Practice Hearing God’s Words
