Galatians 3:7-18 Children of Abraham by adoption
Our salvation is based on a promise given to Abraham not on the law given to Moses 430 years too late
Two important words in this passage- Children and Inheritance
The Promise Preached (7-9)
The Promise Preached (7-9)
The gospel was preached to Abraham in Genesis 12:1-3 that he would have a seed that would bless all nations
This blessing that God promised was an inheritance from God
This blessing would come to Abraham but also through Abraham to the nations
Those that be of faith will partake in this Inheritance
All those who bless you will be blessed (vs 3)
Abraham’s blessing is the same as our in that he heard the gospel and believed in the promises of God and the work that he would do
The gospel, from Abraham until today has been the same good news that God will save us and bless us by the power of his might. To make this even more evident he issued the law to Moses to expose the great need of this promise.
The Promise Revealed (10-14)
The Promise Revealed (10-14)
The law brought a curse to reveal our need of faith
Romans 5:12-21 The law given to abound sin
13- without the law sin is not imputed- no curse, no clear consequences
Death was reigning from the beginning, the establishing of the law was to reveal his wicked throne in our lives (Romans 7:7)
When we reach desperation we will search for a savior
The law brought a cursed one to reveal the Savior
Jesus lived according to the law and fulfilled it in everyway without sin
However, Jesus died a death of a cursed sinner bringing the curse of the law upon himself instead of on us
When we see Christ on the cross we realize the weight and damage of our sin; we see what we deserved by breaking the law
When we see Christ raised again we have hope that there is life after death; that the law has no more power in our lives
Faith in this cursed Savior brings us into covenant with God. This covenant precedes the law so there is nothing the law can do to break our covenant with God and rob us of our inheritance
The Promise Fulfilled (15-18)
The Promise Fulfilled (15-18)
The Promise to Abraham was a promise of a Savior, Jesus Christ
God’s promise to Abraham was a continuation of his promise to Eve and he had one man in mind when he promised Abraham a seed
It wasn’t Ishmael, and it wasn’t Isaac
It was God’s son, Jesus Christ
The promise was one of inheritance given to the faithful
