I. Pray then like this...

has shown us what not to do and who not to imitate
Therefore, there is a right way to pray
What if I am just praying from the heart, is that wrong?
No, but get a Bible and connect the heart and the head
follow the Lords model
directly from the only begotten, God in flesh
not long, a private prayer is usually longer

II. Our Father

personal and plural (our)
revolutionary to Jews who did not see God as personal, individual Father, but Father of the nation only
annunciation from Jesus that He is now also our Father that we can speak to
We may venture more freely to call God our Father, because His only Son, in order that we might have a Father in common with Him, chose to be our brother.
John Calvin

III. Hallowed be your name

set apart as holy
may it be in our hearts, lives, etc.
You are an instrument through whom God displays His holiness in the world. If His name is to be hallowed on earth as it is in Heaven, it must first be hallowed in your life.
John F. MacArthur
He is Holy, Holy, Holy
For the sake of the name...

IV. Kingdom come, your will be done

Christ’s reign in His people, the church, here on earth
His presence is the presence of holiness here
kingdom being built, revealed
good for everyone
Will...
Ephesians 5:17 ESV
17 Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is.
on earth as in heaven, His decided will be done here, we are for it
Matthew 16:19 “19 I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.””
the keys are given to chosen agents used to carry out His will, building His church in holiness

V. Daily Bread

He alone provides.
FF to vv. 25-34
Israel in the wilderness - Ex. 16 -
gather only for the day
Deuteronomy 8:3 ESV
3 And he humbled you and let you hunger and fed you with manna, which you did not know, nor did your fathers know, that he might make you know that man does not live by bread alone, but man lives by every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord.
John 4:34 ESV
34 Jesus said to them, “My food is to do the will of him who sent me and to accomplish his work.
Our daily bread does but feed us as lambs for the slaughter, if our sins be not pardoned. It intimates, likewise, that we must pray for daily pardon, as duly as we pray for daily bread.
Matthew Henry

VI. Forgiveness

because of it we are justified
Romans 8:1 ESV
1 There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.
Romans 8:30 ESV
30 And those whom he predestined he also called, and those whom he called he also justified, and those whom he justified he also glorified.
Think 1 Peter 3:7 “7 Likewise, husbands, live with your wives in an understanding way, showing honor to the woman as the weaker vessel, since they are heirs with you of the grace of life, so that your prayers may not be hindered.”
unforgiveness may hinder your prayers
Unforgiveness is the measure of self-righteousness just as forgiveness is the measure of love.
John F. MacArthur
be so moved, changed by the gospel that you overflow with gratefulness and thereby forgive as you have been forgiven - see vv.14-15

VII. Temptations & Evil

only God provides the way of escape from temptation, see Matt. 4 -
1 Corinthians 10:13 ESV
13 No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.
so what are they for, why do they remain?
James 1:2–4 ESV
2 Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, 3 for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. 4 And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.
James 1:12–14 ESV
12 Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him. 13 Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am being tempted by God,” for God cannot be tempted with evil, and he himself tempts no one. 14 But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire.
without Him we would succomb
Evil
John 17:15 ESV
15 I do not ask that you take them out of the world, but that you keep them from the evil one.
2 Thessalonians 3:3 ESV
3 But the Lord is faithful. He will establish you and guard you against the evil one.
2 Timothy 4:18 ESV
18 The Lord will rescue me from every evil deed and bring me safely into his heavenly kingdom. To him be the glory forever and ever. Amen.
