Romans: Confession and Profession of Faith

Romans 10:1–13 CSB
1 Brothers and sisters, my heart’s desire and prayer to God concerning them is for their salvation. 2 I can testify about them that they have zeal for God, but not according to knowledge. 3 Since they are ignorant of the righteousness of God and attempted to establish their own righteousness, they have not submitted to God’s righteousness. 4 For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes, 5 since Moses writes about the righteousness that is from the law: The one who does these things will live by them. 6 But the righteousness that comes from faith speaks like this: Do not say in your heart, “Who will go up to heaven?” that is, to bring Christ down 7 or, “Who will go down into the abyss?” that is, to bring Christ up from the dead. 8 On the contrary, what does it say? The message is near you, in your mouth and in your heart. This is the message of faith that we proclaim: 9 If you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 One believes with the heart, resulting in righteousness, and one confesses with the mouth, resulting in salvation. 11 For the Scripture says, Everyone who believes on him will not be put to shame, 12 since there is no distinction between Jew and Greek, because the same Lord of all richly blesses all who call on him. 13 For everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.
Introduction: w
I. Zeal for God vs.1-3
Romans 10:1–3 CSB
1 Brothers and sisters, my heart’s desire and prayer to God concerning them is for their salvation. 2 I can testify about them that they have zeal for God, but not according to knowledge. 3 Since they are ignorant of the righteousness of God and attempted to establish their own righteousness, they have not submitted to God’s righteousness.
When Paul speaks of his people he highlights two things:
His concern for their salvation
Their zeal for God
Highlighting these two things tells us this; it is possible to have a zeal for God but yet not be saved. Paul knows this in his own life.
Galatians 1:14 CSB
14 I advanced in Judaism beyond many contemporaries among my people, because I was extremely zealous for the traditions of my ancestors.
NOTE: We must not mistake zeal/passion for the work of the Holy Spirit. (this does not mean that you won’t be passionate about thing, Paul still was as a believer, but it is to highlight that the Holy Spirit is still at work even when you don’t feel it).
Another note: Just because you’re passionate about it, doesn’t mean that God is passionate about it.
Wrong Info, Wrong Pursuit
Romans 10:2 CSB
2 I can testify about them that they have zeal for God, but not according to knowledge.
The disconnect here was found in the fact that the people had bad mixture. They had zeal which is good but that zeal was rooted in ignorance which is not good.
It’s a terrible thing when someone is running fast and hard with misinformation.
This isn’t just an ancient tragedy but it is very present one too. Sometimes we are very zealous about things that we are also very uninformed(lacking knowledge) about.
One thing that we ought not be uniformed about is salvation. For that is the only thing that has eternal ramifications. And God wants for us to be informed about these things.
1 Thessalonians 4:13 CSB
13 We do not want you to be uninformed, brothers and sisters, concerning those who are asleep, so that you will not grieve like the rest, who have no hope.
We want to have the right information so that we can have the right pursuit.
II. Righteousness by Faith vs. 4-7
The place that they were ignorant was concerning the righteousness of God and as a result they did not submit to God and they established their own righteousness.
Romans 10:3 CSB
3 Since they are ignorant of the righteousness of God and attempted to establish their own righteousness, they have not submitted to God’s righteousness.
Whenever we do not seek the righteousness of God we will establish our own righteousness. They looked at keep the law as a way of being righteous and for the person who can completely keep the law, it is. The problem is no one can fully keep the law (this does not mean that we willfully sin).
When we see that we cannot fully keep the requirements of the law, we must ask how can we be a righteous people? It is that pursuit that leads us to true hope found in Jesus.
Galatians 3:24 CSB
24 The law, then, was our guardian until Christ, so that we could be justified by faith.
Romans 10:4 CSB
4 For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes,
(Christ did not abolish the law, He fulfilled it. Righteousness is found in Him alone)
Romans 10:5–7 CSB
5 since Moses writes about the righteousness that is from the law: The one who does these things will live by them. 6 But the righteousness that comes from faith speaks like this: Do not say in your heart, “Who will go up to heaven?” that is, to bring Christ down 7 or, “Who will go down into the abyss?” that is, to bring Christ up from the dead.
ascension and resurrection motifs (as if they had not happened and needed human intervention)
III. True Salvation vs. 8-10
The cross isn’t far from us but it is near. Righteousness is found here:
Romans 10:9 CSB
9 If you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.
Confessing and believing are connected together. The confession is this: Jesus is Lord. It is that confession that makes one right with God/fulfills the requirements of the law/saves a person from the wrath of God/brings about eternal life.
It is this singular act that separates Christianity from every other world religion. It is this statement that more that just a religion about moral good. Jesus did not die to make bad people good. He died, was buried, and resurrected in order to bring (spiritually) dead people to life. Sinners to repentance.
The Epistle to the Romans 2. Two Ways of Righteousness, 10:1–13

It points to the deity of Christ (the word “Lord” is used over 6,000 times in LXX for the name of God

“believe in your heart”-this is not just lip service. It is the outward display of an inner working thing. God’s spirit working in us
Ezekiel 36:26–27 CSB
26 I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will remove your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh. 27 I will place my Spirit within you and cause you to follow my statutes and carefully observe my ordinances.
John 4:1–2 CSB
1 When Jesus learned that the Pharisees had heard he was making and baptizing more disciples than John 2 (though Jesus himself was not baptizing, but his disciples were),
So the belief that we come to is through God working in us.
John 15:16 CSB
16 You did not choose me, but I chose you. I appointed you to go and produce fruit and that your fruit should remain, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he will give you.
Philippians 1:6 CSB
6 I am sure of this, that he who started a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.
IV. Salvation for All vs. 11-13
Romans 10:11–13 CSB
11 For the Scripture says, Everyone who believes on him will not be put to shame, 12 since there is no distinction between Jew and Greek, because the same Lord of all richly blesses all who call on him. 13 For everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.
