A Praise of David. 1 I will extol You, my God, O King; And I will bless Your name forever and ever. 2 Every day I will bless You, And I will praise Your name forever and ever. 3 Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised; And His greatness is unsearchable. 4 One generation shall praise Your works to another, And shall declare Your mighty acts. 5 I will meditate on the glorious splendor of Your majesty, And on Your wondrous works. 6 Men shall speak of the might of Your awesome acts, And I will declare Your greatness. 7 They shall utter the memory of Your great goodness, And shall sing of Your righteousness. 8 The Lord is gracious and full of compassion, Slow to anger and great in mercy. 9 The Lord is good to all, And His tender mercies are over all His works. 10 All Your works shall praise You, O Lord, And Your saints shall bless You. 11 They shall speak of the glory of Your kingdom, And talk of Your power, 12 To make known to the sons of men His mighty acts, And the glorious majesty of His kingdom. 13 Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, And Your dominion endures throughout all generations. 14 The Lord upholds all who fall, And raises up all who are bowed down. 15 The eyes of all look expectantly to You, And You give them their food in due season. 16 You open Your hand And satisfy the desire of every living thing. 17 The Lord is righteous in all His ways, Gracious in all His works. 18 The Lord is near to all who call upon Him, To all who call upon Him in truth. 19 He will fulfill the desire of those who fear Him; He also will hear their cry and save them. 20 The Lord preserves all who love Him, But all the wicked He will destroy. 21 My mouth shall speak the praise of the Lord, And all flesh shall bless His holy name Forever and ever.
Share briefly about this Psalm
Our God, our king (v.1), our Lord, (all throughout)
is glorious, and majestic
His greatness is unsearchable
He is righteous
and powerful
there is no end to His kingdom
What I need to do is bow down
and look expectancy to the God
I need.
Mankind
we will fall, we will fail, we will suffer and struggle
We give God plenty of reasons to be angry
we give Him plenty of reasons to condemn us
May we look expectantly to our God
and call on Him, fear him, cry to Him,
Love Him
and He will uphold us, and raise us up,
He will provide,
He will be near to us
He will hear our crys
He will save us
He will preserve us
He is so great
He is so good to us!
He is slow to anger, great in mercy, and gracious
To start lets look at verse 1-2
which will introduce to us what this Psalm is about
1 I will extol You, my God, O King; And I will bless Your name forever and ever. 2 Every day I will bless You, And I will praise Your name forever and ever.
This is a Psalm to Extol, Bless, and praise
God.
Extol mean to exalt, to raise up and to lift up.
It is interesting because how do I lift up the One
Who already lifted up? And High and above it all?
How can us created out of dust exalt God?
Well I think it doesn't have to do with us giving God a status or position in life
We have no control over the universe
We cant give him a promotion...
So It has to do with our own heart
a place I do have control over.
We decide how important family is or our jobs, in our hearts.
How important is God?
What position does He have in our hearts?
So This is saying...
God I will put you the higher places of my heart
To Bless means to speak well of
it may help to think that the opposite of this word is
to curse
to bless is to commend
the word
Praise comes from a root word to shine
and carries the idea to make a show over,
to celebrate. to eulogize, to admire
...
So this is a Psalm of ...
Giving God the proper position in our heart
blessing, and praising His name
Who He is!
This next section speaks of His greatness
and so in reading this
may we repeat these words in our heart
Lets read verses 3-7
3 Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised; And His greatness is unsearchable. 4 One generation shall praise Your works to another, And shall declare Your mighty acts. 5 I will meditate on the glorious splendor of Your majesty, And on Your wondrous works. 6 Men shall speak of the might of Your awesome acts, And I will declare Your greatness. 7 They shall utter the memory of Your great goodness, And shall sing of Your righteousness.
His greatness is unsearchable
the word here is meant to say
that his greatness is beyond our understanding
but that doesn't mean we should not try
Just no matter how big we can try to picture God
He is bigger
No matter how great we can think of God
He is greater then that!
So this doesnt mean then since its impossible to know His greatness
that we should try
Here David continues to say that he will meditate
He will meditate on glorious splendor of His majesty
and on His wondrous works
Meditate doesn't mean to light a candle
get into a certain position and hum
It means to ponder, to occupy oneself
I like how the theological wordbook of the OT put it
“go over a matter in one’s mind.”
This meditation or contemplation may be done either inwardly or outwardly”
So just think about these things
occupy your mind with His power, His grace, His love, His greatness, His majesty, His acts, His goodness
And when we do this how can we not be like the generations,
like the men mentioned here
who will praise God’s works to each other
who will declare His wondrous acts
who will speak of might of his awesome acts
who will speak the memory of His great goodness
and sing of His righteousness
It just makes me wonder
what do I mostly occupy my mind with
how to get through the day
something I want to do
Shows, entertainement
Drama, problems, circumstances
We know what happens to our hearts when our min is occupied on problems?
we feel stress?
What happens to our hearts when we occupy with selfish wants?
heart never satisfied
What happens to our hearts with a mind occupied on
God?
Based on this verse we can occupy
our minds/ meditate
think of....
Here we see that He is:
Great (v.1)
Unsearchable greatness (v.2)
His actions are mighty (v.4, 12)
He is majestic (v.5)
His works are wondrous (v.5)
His action are awesome (v.6)
He is good (v.7,9,)
He is righteous (v.7,17)
He is gracious (v.8,17)
He is full of compassion (v.8)
He is slow to anger (v.8)
He is great in mercy (v.8)
He has tender mercy (v.9)
He is powerful (v.12)
His kingdom is glorious and majestic (v.11,12)
His kingdom is everlasting (v.13)
His dominion endures throughout all generations (v.13)
in the next section we see how He is worthy of praise for His acts
8 The Lord is gracious and full of compassion, Slow to anger and great in mercy. 9 The Lord is good to all, And His tender mercies are over all His works. 10 All Your works shall praise You, O Lord, And Your saints shall bless You. 11 They shall speak of the glory of Your kingdom, And talk of Your power, 12 To make known to the sons of men His mighty acts, And the glorious majesty of His kingdom. 13 Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, And Your dominion endures throughout all generations.
Here we see God receiving Praise of His Kingdom and of Who He is and what He does.
in response to the King and His Kingdom we see
His works praise Him
the Saint bless Him
The Saints speak of the glory of His Kingdom, and talk of His power
They make it known to the sons of men His mighty acts, and the glorious majesty of His kingdom
I love this because were going to get to experience this!
The reaction to God, to His acts, to His Kingdom
is praising, blessings, speaking, and talking about Him
Now we dont deserve this kind of life!
we are not saints because were perfect
this is because as verse 8 says
He is gracious
He gives to us what we do not deserve
it also says He is full of compassion
This is in the OT
He is full of compassion
Compassion is special because it involves much more then
doing the right thing
He cares
He loves
He sees the need
He wants to help
He has all we need and He cares for us
What is it that you need?
He cares for you!
He is full of compassion
He is also slow to anger
boy do i deserve His anger
I have given God plenty of reasons to be angry with me
and to condemn me
but as it continues to say
He is also great in mercy
He doesn't give us what we do deserve.
In fact it says His tender mercies are over all His work.
I was interested in that word being used for tender mercies
and looked it up and
saw that it means a very tender affection, love, natural affection, the feeling of love, a deep love
Their is a deep love over all His work.
God just do what He does
He does it in love
“for God so loved the world”
4 But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, 5 even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved),
What God does is done in love.
He cares, He has compassion
Why would we not praise Him?
His kingdom is a kingdom far above any other!
A place of His glory, and majesty
that we get to go
because He love
because He cares
because He is gracious, and merciful
in this last we see promises to His people
14 The Lord upholds all who fall, And raises up all who are bowed down.
Here we see a people who have fallen, bowed down, those with eyes looking expectantly to God, those calling upon Him, those who fear Him, those who cry to Him, and those who love Him
While this can be speaking of many different people
May it all of it be all of us.
Yes we have fallen, but He upholds us
Yes we have been bowed down but He raises us up!
28 Have you not known? Have you not heard? The everlasting God, the Lord, The Creator of the ends of the earth, Neither faints nor is weary. His understanding is unsearchable. 29 He gives power to the weak, And to those who have no might He increases strength. 30 Even the youths shall faint and be weary, And the young men shall utterly fall, 31 But those who wait on the Lord Shall renew their strength; They shall mount up with wings like eagles, They shall run and not be weary, They shall walk and not faint.
10 Fear not, for I am with you; Be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, Yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.’
to do is seen in that next part of our section in Psalm 145:15
to look expectantly to God
I know my sons look expectantly to me
give them some of my oreos
My wife looks expectantly to me
love her and care for her
So many of us look to God expecting Him
to judge us, condemn, be angry, or hate us
He is gracious expect grace
He is loving expect love
Now He does not put up with sin
and those who are wicked
not the Saints
as it says in verse 20
He will destroy the wicked
because as verse 17 says He is righteous in all His ways
He will show grace to anyone who turns to Him
because He is gracious
verse 17 says He is gracious in all His works
so as verse 18 says call to Him
and He will be near!
James 4:8 (NKJV)
8 Draw near to God and He will draw near to you....
What I love here
is that from our passage
Yes He is high and lifted up!
yes He is glorious
but He isnt in some distant land, un reachable, leaving you on a busy signal
He is glorious yet near those who call to Him!
It says that
He will hear their cries and save (v.19)
I dont know if you came in here today
with some baggage,
with some heartaches
with some pains
but go to Him
18 The Lord is near to those who have a broken heart, And saves such as have a contrite spirit.
I think verse 20 here just summarizes what
this whole Psalm should bring us to
it says “He preserves all who love Him” (V.20)
After all we see about God
For all who He is, and all that He does for us!
How do we not love Him?
May we Love Him!
and the promise we get for loving Him
is that He will preserve us!
which by this section we know He is capable of!
His kingdom is everlasting
He is glorious, powerful, mighty,
If he says He will preserve You He will!

Even in His greatness
He will be near!
