The Sinless Lord
The Sinless Lord
One of the clear distinctives between man and Jesus Christ was that Christ was sinless.
Sin has perverted the way we see ourselves. How we see each other. How we see the world around us.
But Christ had no sin.
So His perception about people and reality wasn’t tainted by sin.
Imagine every time we look at a person we are judging them by there look there dress, how they act everything is looked at with a skued perceptions because of sin.
12 For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part, but then I shall know just as I also am known.
A city like Corinth, they where famous for its bronz mirrors, They would had appreciated Paul’s illustration
When you look through this mirror you couldn’t see your face clearly just dimly.
Maybe the mirror has defects and you can see what kind of flaws you have.
But its way different looking face to face with someone. And having a God who sees you face to face.
When we look at man its through a mirror dimly.
When Christ sees man its face to face.
Without Christ and Him giving us the Holy Spirit we wouldn’t see clearly reality how we ought to.
We can contrast certain attributes about God with mans clearly limited attributes.
7 You are all fair, my love, And there is no spot in you.
One of the greatest arguments for the Deity of Christ is that He is sinless and man is not.
They’re are qualities about God that are very specific to His Deity.
His omni presence, though we are not all present we are present just with limits
His omniscience, Christ being all knowing, man is not all knowing but I know somethings though limited
Christ being all powerful, man isn’t all powerful but we do have authority and power to a limited degree.
But sinlessness we are not. to any degree.
Sinlessness in our Lord means that He never did anything that displeased God, violated the Mosaic Law under which He lived on earth, or in any way failed to show in His life at all times the glory of God
John 8:29 (NKJV)
29 And He who sent Me is with Me. The Father has not left Me alone, for I always do those things that please Him.”
Jesus had maintained that he was not acting alone but in response to the Father’s will (John 8:28 ; cf. 5:19; 6:38; 7:16).
Jesus though sinless He experienced limitations that come with being a human.
He was weary
6 Now Jacob’s well was there. Jesus therefore, being wearied from His journey, sat thus by the well. It was about the sixth hour.
He was hungry
2 And when He had fasted forty days and forty nights, afterward He was hungry.
18 Now in the morning, as He returned to the city, He was hungry.
He was thirsty
28 After this, Jesus, knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the Scripture might be fulfilled, said, “I thirst!”
He slept
24 And suddenly a great tempest arose on the sea, so that the boat was covered with the waves. But He was asleep.
But at every stage of His life, infancy, boyhood, adolescence, manhood, he was holy and sinless
He was announced as a Holy child!
35 And the angel answered and said to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Highest will overshadow you; therefore, also, that Holy One who is to be born will be called the Son of God.
He challenged His enemies to show that He was a sinner and the could not do it!
46 Which of you convicts Me of sin? And if I tell the truth, why do you not believe Me?
During the trials and Crucifixion, He was acknowledged as innocent eleven times
(by Judas, Matt. 27:4 ;
4 saying, “I have sinned by betraying innocent blood.” And they said, “What is that to us? You see to it!”
by Pilate six times, Matt 27:24 , Luke 23:14, 22; John 18:38; 19:4, 6;
24 When Pilate saw that he could not prevail at all, but rather that a tumult was rising, he took water and washed his hands before the multitude, saying, “I am innocent of the blood of this just Person. You see to it.”
by Herod Antipas, Luke 23:15 ;
15 no, neither did Herod, for I sent you back to him; and indeed nothing deserving of death has been done by Him.
by Pilate’s wife, Matt. 27:19 ;
19 While he was sitting on the judgment seat, his wife sent to him, saying, “Have nothing to do with that just Man, for I have suffered many things today in a dream because of Him.”
by the repentant thief, Luke 23:41 ;
41 And we indeed justly, for we receive the due reward of our deeds; but this Man has done nothing wrong.”
and by the Roman centurion, Matt. 27:54)
Peter said He commited no sin
22 “Who committed no sin, Nor was deceit found in His mouth”;
He was at all point tempted but yet without sin.
15 For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin.
Because Jesus was tempted does that mean He could sin?
The concept that He could not have sinned is called impeccability. The concept that He could have, whether He did or not, is peccability
Charles Hodge represents the peccability viewpoint. “Temptation implies the possibility of sin. If from the constitution of His person it was impossible for Christ to sin, then His temptation was unreal and without effect, and He cannot sympathize with His people.”
On the other side William Shedd (American Theologian ) wrote:
It is objected to the doctrine of Christ’s impeccability that it is inconsistent with His temptability. A person who cannot sin, it is said, cannot be tempted to sin. This is not correct; any more than it would be correct to say that because an army cannot be conquered, it cannot be attacked. Temptability depends on the constitutional susceptibility, while impeccability depends on the will.… Those temptations were very strong, but if the self-determination of His holy will was stronger than they, then they could not induce Him to sin, and He would be impeccable. And yet plainly He would be temptable.
26 For such a High Priest was fitting for us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and has become higher than the heavens;
He never responded wrongly to any of His temptations, Nor could He because He was God !!
But yet as a man He felt the reality of sin. Just not yielding to them.
Just like an immovable boulder can bear the brunt of a raging sea.
When Temptation came at Him though He felt its pressure He couldn’t succumb to it because He’s God.
Thats why He able to sympathize ( able to feel or suffer with) us
21 For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.
5 And you know that He was manifested to take away our sins, and in Him there is no sin.
