holy spirit revealing------ repent from something
todays passage
understand what repentance is
and why it is so important
open your bibles-
Luke 13:1–5 NKJV
There were present at that season some who told Him about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices. And Jesus answered and said to them, “Do you suppose that these Galileans were worse sinners than all other Galileans, because they suffered such things? I tell you, no; but unless you repent you will all likewise perish. Or those eighteen on whom the tower in Siloam fell and killed them, do you think that they were worse sinners than all other men who dwelt in Jerusalem? I tell you, no; but unless you repent you will all likewise perish.”
our first point

turn to Jesus when you see evil in the world

Q. Have you ever heard the term why do bad things happen to good people?
newsflash - no good people
Romans 3:10–12 NKJV
As it is written: “There is none righteous, no, not one; There is none who understands; There is none who seeks after God. They have all turned aside; They have together become unprofitable; There is none who does good, no, not one.”
no good people
some upright, some very unrighteous
However both sinners.
in verse 1 : some in the crowd turns to Jesus about a tragic event
pilate mixed gallilean blood with sacrafices
pilate - Roman Govenor of Judea
and gallileans- men from galilee
nazareth , many disciples from there, much of Jesus ministry there
can anything good come from Nazareth
explain event- pilate killed men making sacrafices
in vs 2
Jesus address wrong thought
many of us have
Do you suppose these gallileans were worse sinners ?
when something really bad happens
we often think God is repaying us for something we did bad
Illistrate
similar- my dad left my family when I was little
growing up I thought it was because of something I did wrong.
Untrue- I connected a tragic event with my righteousness.
If I was better morally - better things would happen to me
This is essentially karma - false
new age
good person =good
bad person =bad
Q- But what does the bible say?
Matthew 5:44–45 NKJV
But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven; for He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust.
explain - rain on just and unjust.
We recently lost our newborn daughter after 9 hours.
Do you think it was because we were worse sinners?
No
We were sinners just like everyone else.
Everyone in our church has a tragic story somewhere along the line.
I am sure most of you have one too.
God is not getting you back.
If anything He is getting your attention .
Showing you that the reason evil happens - because of sin
because of sin we die
gods judgment to every sinner is death
Romans 6:23 NKJV
For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
because of sin we live in a cursed world
Romans 5:12 NKJV
Therefore, just as through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned—
this one man is adam- ate from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil
sin- disobedience
consequence was corruption.
this is why pilate murdered the galileans
corruption of sin is why pilate murdered Jesus
BUT
Genesis 50:20 NKJV
But as for you, you meant evil against me; but God meant it for good, in order to bring it about as it is this day, to save many people alive.
God can take those tragic moments in your life and turn it for good
all the evil in the world is meant to lead you to Him.
so when you see tragic events
or face them yourself
turn to Jesus for comfort and understanding.
This brings us to our second point

Repentance is for everyone

Part of that turning to Jesus includes repentance.
Repentance- explain ---180----ball illlistration
starts in mind ---thoughts
Jesus answers his question in Verse 3 - No, They were not worse sinners
But if you dont repent, you will perish just like them.
Perish- to be destroyed, to die
Physical death- explain,---------- men who were murdered
likewise
if you do not repent you will also perish
2- main points to this perishing
1st prophetic -
speaking to Jews
needing to repent and follow Him
nation of Israel ---mostly rejected Jesus
In Ad 70 - Rome destroyed the temple and conquered Israel
2nd point of perishing is
Spiritual in nature
this applies to you
If you do not repent you will in like manner perish.
This perishing will happen to everyone who does not repent from their sin and follow Jesus.
Hebrews 9:27 NKJV
And as it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment,
Q.What will your judgment look like?
Those who are born again as followers of Jesus
will not perish
but attain everlasting life.
Revelation 2:11 NKJV
“He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. He who overcomes shall not be hurt by the second death.” ’
For the unbeliever the second death is eternal seperation from God.
This is the spiritual perishing.
spiritual perishing is for who?-----unforgiven
John 3:16 NKJV
For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.
Q. What do we need to repent from?
1st- unbelief
Mark 1:14–15 NKJV
Now after John was put in prison, Jesus came to Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God, and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel.”
Q. what keeps you out of heaven?
sin.
Q. What is the cure for your sin?
Faith in Jesus.
Faith is not just believing jesus existed and is God.
genuine faith always includes action.
illustration- ----Who has gone skydiving?
If you jump out of a plane what are you going to make sure that you have on?
parachute- —faith in parachute -----pull it open
same with faith in Christ
if we have faith in Him, we will follow Him
this includes repentance.
repentance is changing direction
starts in the mind
leads to action
Q. What does repentance from unbelief look like?
One day you have to make a decision.
your not saved because---- - your parents are christians,
go to church, or because your a good person.
your saved when you repent from your unbelief
and make a personal decision to follow Jesus.
It changes every aspect of the way you live.
After you have repented of unbelief
you are a christian.
But still need daily repentance
still struggle sin
remember it is not about perfection.
its about direction.
Q. What is sin?
missing the mark. disobedience to Gods commands
what to do ?
1st. Change your mind about sin
2nd. bring it to God in prayer.
3rd. go the other way.
Focus in areas that you need to repent
A. Are you a believer- or do you need to repent from unbelief
B. Are you loving God well?
C. loving parents, neighbors, etc.
Where are you falling short.
!!!remember when looking at our shortcomings
!!!REMEMBER- Gods heart is to forgive.
Romans 2:4 NKJV
Or do you despise the riches of His goodness, forbearance, and longsuffering, not knowing that the goodness of God leads you to repentance?
He will forgive you every time you repent
He loves to see hear admit when you messed up
His response will be, I love you, get back up , and follow me.
Our third and final point is

Dont wait until it is too late

Luke 13:4–5 NKJV
Or those eighteen on whom the tower in Siloam fell and killed them, do you think that they were worse sinners than all other men who dwelt in Jerusalem? I tell you, no; but unless you repent you will all likewise perish.”
We have another tragic event
Explain - siloam-area south of Jerusalem - tower fell and killed 18 people
Were they worse sinners, ....... NO
tragic death was not meant to pay back especially evil people
It was meant as a warning to all sinners.
Let this be a warning to you too.
At any given point something tragic can happen to anyone of us
we are not promised tomorrow
We hear about a school shooting a few times per year.
There are roughly 42,000 deaths per year by car accidents
in calvary chapel Miami we met a kid who was diagnosed with a type of cancer and has only a few years to live
not knowing when you will meet Him
You need to ask yourself
Am I right with Jesus?
2 Corinthians 6:1–2 NKJV
We then, as workers together with Him also plead with you not to receive the grace of God in vain. For He says: In an acceptable time I have heard you, And in the day of salvation I have helped you. Behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation.
If you do not have a genuine relationship with Jesus
It needs to start today.
You can come to me or Jessica any time
and we can walk through what that means.
Having a relationship with Jesus changes everything about your life.
but it starts with a simple decision
story- when I made that descion
I asked God for help
Psalm 34:4 NKJV
I sought the Lord, and He heard me, And delivered me from all my fears.
He wants to give you grace

Outro

From this passage we learn
that we need to turn to Jesus when we see evil in this world.
Wicked things happen because of sin
But what the enemy meant for evil
God turns it for Good.
we learn that repentance is for everyone
for unbeliever-
for christian-
Finally we learned that we need to get right with Jesus
Before its too late.
get right with him by faith
