2 Samuel 24:1 “Again the anger of the Lord was aroused against Israel, and He moved David against them to say, “Go, number Israel and Judah.””
1 Chronicles 21:1 “Now Satan stood up against Israel, and moved David to number Israel.”
Let’s address one question before we move on another.
Who stirred up David to take a Census?
Exodus 30:11-16 “Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: “When you take the census of the children of Israel for their number, then every man shall give a ransom for himself to the Lord, when you number them, that there may be no plague among them when you number them. This is what everyone among those who are numbered shall give: half a shekel according to the shekel of the sanctuary (a shekel is twenty gerahs). The half-shekel shall be an offering to the Lord. Everyone included among those who are numbered, from twenty years old and above, shall give an offering to the Lord. The rich shall not give more and the poor shall not give less than half a shekel, when you give an offering to the Lord, to make atonement for yourselves. And you shall take the atonement money of the children of Israel, and shall appoint it for the service of the tabernacle of meeting, that it may be a memorial for the children of Israel before the Lord, to make atonement for yourselves.””
The ransom was to make sure everyone knew they belonged to the Lord and He had rescued them from Egypt.
This Census was not led of the Lord and apparently David didn’t want to charge a tax on his insecurity
Read the rest of 1 Chronicles 21
Insecurity will abuse authority- You will remind people of your title/position
1 Chronicles 27:23-24 “But David did not take the number of those twenty years old and under, because the Lord had said He would multiply Israel like the stars of the heavens. Joab the son of Zeruiah began a census, but he did not finish, for wrath came upon Israel because of this census; nor was the number recorded in the account of the chronicles of King David.”
David was only interested in the fighting men.
David was insecure.
Insecurity causes you to examine yourself and see if you are strong enough…beautiful or handsome enough…have enough money in your account…have the right car…the right clothes…the right friends
Comparison with others starts with a census of yourself.
Stop trying to see if you have or are enough!
Don’t put others down in order to build yourself up! The women and the children were just as important as the men who drew the sword, but David was only interested in them.
Don’t value other people because of what they can do for you!
Luke 18:9-14 “Also He spoke this parable to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and despised others: “Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, ‘God, I thank You that I am not like other men—extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this tax collector. I fast twice a week; I give tithes of all that I possess.’ And the tax collector, standing afar off, would not so much as raise his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, ‘God, be merciful to me a sinner!’ I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other; for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.””
Psalm 118:6-9 “The Lord is on my side; I will not fear. What can man do to me? The Lord is for me among those who help me; Therefore I shall see my desire on those who hate me. It is better to trust in the Lord Than to put confidence in man. It is better to trust in the Lord Than to put confidence in princes.”
