Luke 10:1-12, 17-20
INTRODUCTION
Modern neighbor problem.
Garages and privacy fences/walls.
1940’s and 50’s- chainlink fences/ gates between yards/ chairs on front porch.
Hard doesn’t mean we stop trying.
We are called to love our neighbors.
Apartment complexes.
18 within a mile of the church.
No access to any right now.
Churches are losing the battle in ABQ.
We've had a decent 12 months.
But baptisms are almost nothing.
Statewide Baptisms are tanking. Baptists in New Mexico are in trouble.
We have forgotten our calling.
Acts 1:8 ESV
8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”
Jesus sent out 72 disciples.
Luke 10:1–12 ESV
1 After this the Lord appointed seventy-two others and sent them on ahead of him, two by two, into every town and place where he himself was about to go. 2 And he said to them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few. Therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest. 3 Go your way; behold, I am sending you out as lambs in the midst of wolves. 4 Carry no moneybag, no knapsack, no sandals, and greet no one on the road. 5 Whatever house you enter, first say, ‘Peace be to this house!’ 6 And if a son of peace is there, your peace will rest upon him. But if not, it will return to you. 7 And remain in the same house, eating and drinking what they provide, for the laborer deserves his wages. Do not go from house to house. 8 Whenever you enter a town and they receive you, eat what is set before you. 9 Heal the sick in it and say to them, ‘The kingdom of God has come near to you.’ 10 But whenever you enter a town and they do not receive you, go into its streets and say, 11 ‘Even the dust of your town that clings to our feet we wipe off against you. Nevertheless know this, that the kingdom of God has come near.’ 12 I tell you, it will be more bearable on that day for Sodom than for that town.
Luke 10:17–20 ESV
17 The seventy-two returned with joy, saying, “Lord, even the demons are subject to us in your name!” 18 And he said to them, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. 19 Behold, I have given you authority to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall hurt you. 20 Nevertheless, do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.”

6 Truths Concerning Taking Gospel to Our Neighbors

1. There is a Need (2)

Luke 10:2 ESV
2 And he said to them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few. Therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.
Albuquerque is one of the most lost cities in America.
Poverty/ drugs/ crime rate/ gangs.
Crime rate is 169% higher than national average.
The light can only be dimmed if the one holding the light allows it.
We’ve gotten scared and are running from those he’s called us to love.

2. It is Hard (3)

Luke 10:3 ESV
3 Go your way; behold, I am sending you out as lambs in the midst of wolves.
God never promised it would be easy.
In fact we are lambs facing wolves.

3. It takes Faith (4)

Luke 10:4 ESV
4 Carry no moneybag, no knapsack, no sandals, and greet no one on the road.
We have everything we need.
We must stop waiting for everything to be perfect.

4. It is Urgent (4b)

Luke 10:4 ESV
4 Carry no moneybag, no knapsack, no sandals, and greet no one on the road.
"greet no one on the road." (slows down the mission)
Don't get sidetracked.

5. Some are Ready (6)

Luke 10:6 ESV
6 And if a son of peace is there, your peace will rest upon him. But if not, it will return to you.
Find People of Peace
Don't spend too much time on those who do not want anything to do with the Gospel.

6. We Have Authority (17)

Luke 10:17 ESV
17 The seventy-two returned with joy, saying, “Lord, even the demons are subject to us in your name!”
Miracles happen outside the church gathering.
29 in Acts- 2 happen when church is gathered for worship.
When we are doing Jesus' work we carry his authority.
Matthew 28:18–20 ESV
18 And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
What do we do with the authority. Baptize and Teach.
CONCLUSION
John 8:12 ESV
12 Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
We are the light of the world.
We are the city on a hill.
New tool to help us be a light to our neighbors.
