We are back in Luke 9 verses 43-50 this week
Recap
Lets jump in
And all were astonished at the majesty of God.
But while they were all marveling at everything he was doing, Jesus said to his disciples, “Let these words sink into your ears: The Son of Man is about to be delivered into the hands of men.” But they did not understand this saying, and it was concealed from them, so that they might not perceive it. And they were afraid to ask him about this saying.
An argument arose among them as to which of them was the greatest. But Jesus, knowing the reasoning of their hearts, took a child and put him by his side and said to them, “Whoever receives this child in my name receives me, and whoever receives me receives him who sent me. For he who is least among you all is the one who is great.”
John answered, “Master, we saw someone casting out demons in your name, and we tried to stop him, because he does not follow with us.” But Jesus said to him, “Do not stop him, for the one who is not against you is for you.”
Lets Pray

Talk about Luke 9 43 through 50
We find ourselves here at this argument, speak on this
An argument arose among them as to which of them was the greatest. But Jesus, knowing the reasoning of their hearts, took a child and put him by his side and said to them, “Whoever receives this child in my name receives me, and whoever receives me receives him who sent me. For he who is least among you all is the one who is great.”
Lets talk about this word Humility shall we...
In the OT the Hebrew word for Humility An-wa(h) meant to bow down or crouch low, it was a sign of submission.
in the NT the greek word used here in Luke for humility is Tap-e-iones, spiritual state if you will
So what is humility, how do we apply this to our lives?
1. Humility is submission, but not groveling
1. Humility is submission, but not groveling
Speak on the Romans view of humility being weakness,
1 Peter 5:5–6 (ESV)
Likewise, you who are younger, be subject (Submissive) to the elders. Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another, for “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”
Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you,
Clothing ourselves once again with humility. We are to submit to one another
Submitting to one another brings unity and peace…Speak on this...By being submissive and “clothing ourselves with humility” we can create peace and unity with the others.
We are not to be so proud and high up that we can’t accept correction or exhortation. Neither should we be of the mindset that our own opinions and thoughts always are better than the others.
Such thinking won’t lead us to any progress or unity in Christ.
we are to be submissive but do not get it twisted, we are to bow down to no one but christ
You were bought with a price; do not become bondservants of men.
We are to yes be humble, be submissive, but we are to please God and stand for him only, not roll over to try and please others.
Talk about this...
While it is important to be submissive: to accept correction and remain lowly in our own eyes, as Christians, we are to seek to please God with our lives.
We need to fear Him and keep His word. This should be our focus: to humble ourselves under God’s will and live and breathe to keep His commands, not to try to meet human demands and expectations.
2. Humility does not mean that we are silent, or passive people
2. Humility does not mean that we are silent, or passive people
Do not let your adorning be external—the braiding of hair and the putting on of gold jewelry, or the clothing you wear— but let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which in God’s sight is very precious.
God desires that Christians possess a gentle and quiet spirit.
It is of the utmost importance that we are humble and still in our inner man, so that we can hear God’s Spirit speaking to our hearts throughout the day.
If we focus on the outward appearance, if we are loud in spirit, we can not hear Gods leading....Speak
However, possessing a gentle and quiet spirit does not mean that we should be passive people. God also requires action and zeal in our lives.
All those who want a deeper life with Christ realize that they need to be zealous, as well as humble, in their inner man.
Sin cannot be allowed to reign in the heart of a disciple! The Fear of the Lord
If we are humble in our inner man, having a desire to do God’s will, then we will do whatever it takes to keep our hearts and minds pure and free of sin. ( our devotional time with Christ)
Do not be slothful in zeal, be fervent in spirit, serve the Lord.
Likewise, while we should always have a quiet and meek spirit before the Lord, there are some situations where God wants us to be bold and speak up before others. (Work force, family, friends, city council meetings, PTA/school board meetings…)
Here, we need to forsake our own honor, reputation and natural expectations, as always, and obey the Lord with all reverence.
We should not question our own authority or ability to say or do something that God wants to be accomplished through us.
Instead, we should allow God to use us exactly as He pleases in every situation.
3. Humility means we use our talents and capabilities for Gods kingdom
3. Humility means we use our talents and capabilities for Gods kingdom
as a pastor I stress this next point here, (laughter hopefully) speak on this....
For by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned.
we have been given gifts, talents, abilities, that for some might change the world, might change a small mountain town, or might change that one person who God needed you to reach, but we must not boast in ourselves
Nonetheless, this does not mean that we should neglect the gifts and the heavenly calling that God Himself has given to us.
God wants to do a tremendous and transforming work in us and through our lives!
He has equipped us each with our own talents and gifts and bought us with the precious blood of His Son, Jesus Christ.
God desires to be able to use us to His glory and for His purpose, and each of us should be aware of this.
Humility is that we use our talents and capabilities under God’s direction and leading, giving Him the honor and glory for what is accomplished in and through our lives.
Speak on this.....
As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace: whoever speaks, as one who speaks oracles of God; whoever serves, as one who serves by the strength that God supplies—in order that in everything God may be glorified through Jesus Christ. To him belong glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.
Use your gifts and talents for his Kingdom
my last point
4. Humility is the key to progress
4. Humility is the key to progress
But he gives more grace. Therefore it says, “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.
Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you.
Speak on this
To be humble is to have the same mindset as Jesus Christ.
He existed in the form of God, but did not consider equality with God a thing to be grasped, or held onto.
Instead, He took on the form of a servant, and came in the likeness of men. Phil 2.7-8 “but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.”
Jesus is the ultimate example of humility.
He did not value His own self-importance or honor, but freely gave it up in every situation so that God’s will could be carried out and God could be glorified through His life.
If we are of this same humble mindset, forsaking our own reputation and honor in order to be obedient to God’s word and will, we will be able to make unbelievable progress in our Christian lives!
There is a process but with any process there needs to be progress and living humbly unto christ helps us see that progress in our lives...
Lets stand here to day as we get ready to conclude todays message
Humility is a key “article of clothing” in the kingdom of God
in fact without it I would almost say you cant enter...
You see there is the antithesis to humility and that is Pride
scripture says this about pride Prov 16.5
Everyone who is arrogant in heart is an abomination to the Lord;
be assured, he will not go unpunished.
Pride goes before destruction,
and a haughty spirit before a fall.
But he gives more grace. Therefore it says, “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”
For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.”
Pride is dangerous, and if we are not careful it can sweep our legs out right from under us....
speak on pride...
Be humble
