1 Samuel 15:22 “And Samuel said, “Has the Lord as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the Lord? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to listen than the fat of rams.”
Disobedience is the root of most sins. Disobedience began in heaven with Lucifer—Isaiah 14:12–15. It continued with Eve, disobeying God—Genesis 3:1–7. It continued with Cain—Genesis 4:1–13. All through the Bible you will find man being disobedient unto God. Throughout history we see many men as failures because of disobedience. The prisons are filled because of disobedience. All sin is the result of disobedience!

I. DISOBEDIENCE HAS DISTRUST

1. Samson had distrust toward his parents and God—Judges 14:1–4. He married a heathen girl. Because of this distrust, see his steps downward!

1. Self-centered—“Get her for me; for she pleaseth me well”—Judges 14:3. There was no seeking for God’s will.

2. Seduction—Judges 16:4–19. He loved another heathen woman, named Delilah. She was paid 1100 pieces of silver (shekel, worth 64c each) by the lords of the Philistines to find Samson’s strength.

3. Sorrow—Judges 16:20–24. He lost his hair, strength and eyes, and was made a slave. Satan always makes man a slave. 4. Salvation—Judges 16:25–30. Though God forgave Samson, he brought shame and sorrow to God and God’s work.

II. DISOBEDIENCE HAS DISRESPECT—Achan

1. Sin’s progression—Judges 7:1–12. a. Stealing—v.
1. He stole, breaking eighth Commandment—Exodus 20:15. b. Sorrow—vv. 2–5. Because of his sin, Israel lost the battle. c. Shame—vv. 6–9. Joshua questions God. God says, Israel has sinned. d. Sin—vv. 10–12. God reveals to Joshua that Israel had sinned. e. Showing—vv. 13–22. Achan had tried to hide his sin, but God revealed it to Joshua.
2. Sin’s punishment—Judges 7:23–25. Achan and his family were stoned to death. Your sins always cause others to suffer.
III. DISOBEDIENCE BRINGS DEGRADATION—David
1. Slothful—2 Samuel 11:1. David did not go to battle. He was idle. Idleness always leads to trouble.
2. Sensual—2 Samuel 11:2. David saw a woman taking a bath, and had sinful lust toward her.
3. Sin—2 Samuel 11:3–5. David committed adultery with Bathsheba.
4. Shame—2 Samuel 11:6. David tried several wicked plans, finally sent Bathsheba’s husband, Uriah, to battle and he died. David then took Bathsheba as his wife.
IV. DESTRUCTION THROUGH DISOBEDIENCE—Lot and his wife

6. Suffering—2 Samuel 12:6. David reaps his sin fourfold.
7. Sorrow—Psalm 51:1–13. David repents of his sin, but it leaves a scar upon him, and God’s work.

IV. DESTRUCTION THROUGH DISOBEDIENCE—Lot and his wife

1. Sensual—Genesis 13:12. Lot and family moved near Sodom. 2. Spirituality—Genesis 18:20–33. Could not find ten righteous people.
3. Sin—Genesis 19:1–11. The sin of Romans 1:26, 27. Note v. 28. 4. Shame—Genesis 19:14. Sons-in-law did not believe his words.
5. Salvation—Genesis 19:15–25. Lot and family escapes. 6. Stubbornness—Genesis 19:26. Lot’s wife turns into pillar of salt.
Disobedience destroys Christian character. Disobedience always leads away from God. Disobedience is of the devil. A disobedient person is not happy! A disobedient person will disobey both God’s and man’s laws. Everything goes well when you obey. Disobedience will separate you from God!
