This week we read Parasha Ki Teitzei, which is Deuteronomy 21:10-25:19. Ki Teitzei opens and closes with war… But, in between these two stark realities we find 74 mitzvot addressing a wide array of issues that B’nei Yisrael might face in their walk. Now, keep in mind, most of what we find in Deuteronomy is repetition from previous Torah discussions as a refresher before crossing the Jordan, and this is the case with a lot of what we find in this week’s Parasha. As we process through Ki Teitzei we see that the primary focus of this Parasha is two part: 1) V’ahavta L’reicha Kamocha—Love your neighbor as yourself (Leviticus 19:18). And 2) Righteousness of the camp before our Holy God. And pretty much everything found in Parasha Ki Teitzei covers one of these two issues that are both independent yet very much intertwined.
This week’s Parasha, in connection with the focus on how we live righteous lives by how we interact and treat others, we also see a reiteration of the command from Numbers 15 to wear Tzitziyot in Deuteronomy 22:12.

Deuteronomy 23:4–9 TLV
No Ammonite or Moabite is to enter the community of Adonai—even to the tenth generation none belonging to them is to enter the community of Adonai forever— because they did not meet you with bread and water on the way when you came out from Egypt, and because they hired against you Balaam son of Beor from Petor of Aram-naharaim to curse you. But Adonai your God refused to listen to Balaam, and Adonai your God turned the curse into a blessing for you because He loves you. You are never to seek their shalom or welfare all your days. “You are not to detest an Edomite, for he is your brother. You are not to detest an Egyptian, for you were an outsider in his land. The children born to them—the third generation—may enter the community of Adonai.

We see two distinct accusations: 1) They did not offer food, water, and ultimately Shalom. 2) Out of fear and hatred they sought to curse Israel, and ultimately found their weakest link to do so...
Who are the Ammonites and the Moabites?
Genesis 19:35–38 TLV
So they made their father drink wine that night as well, and the younger got up and lay down with him and he did not know that she lay down and got up. So Lot’s two daughters become pregnant by their father. Then the firstborn gave birth to a son and named him Moab: he is the ancestor of the Moabites to this day. The younger also gave birth to a son and named him Ben-Ammi: he is the ancestor of the sons of Ammon to this day.

The Edomites are from Esau with whom Israel was to be friendly…
It’s interesting that in Numbers 20:14-21 we read of the Edomites rejecting passage, food, and water to Israel, but they are shown much greater favor. But the Ammonites and Moabites, who were also family of Israel, were rejected because they did not meet Israel with bread, water, and Shalom, but rather with an attack via Balak and Bilaam.

Matthew 25:31–39 TLV
“Now when the Son of Man comes in His glory, and all the angels with Him, then He will sit on His glorious throne. All the nations will be gathered before Him, and He will separate them from one another, just as the shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. And He will put the sheep on His right, but the goats on His left. Then the King will say to those on His right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave Me something to eat; I was thirsty and you gave Me something to drink; I was a stranger and you invited Me in; I was naked and you clothed Me; I was sick and you visited Me; I was in prison and you came to Me.’ “Then the righteous will answer Him, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry and feed You? Or thirsty and give You something to drink? And when did we see You a stranger and invite You in? Or naked and clothe You? When did we see You sick, or in prison, and come to You?’

2— Hatred and fear
John 15:18–27 TLV
“If the world hates you, know that it has hated Me before you. If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own. But you are not of the world, since I have chosen you out of the world; therefore the world hates you. “Remember the word I spoke to you: ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted Me, they will persecute you also. If they kept My word, they will keep yours also. “But all these things they will do to you for the sake of My name, because they do not know the One who sent Me. If I had not come and spoken to them, they would have no sin. But now they have no excuse for their sin. “He who hates Me also hates My Father. If I had not done works among them that no one else did, they would have no sin. But now they have seen and have hated both Me and My Father. So is fulfilled the word written in their Scripture, ‘They hated Me for no reason.’ “When the Helper comes—whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who goes out from the Father—He will testify about Me. And you also testify, because you have been with Me from the beginning.”
