The Upper Room Discourse (Part 2)
The Upper Room Discourse (Part 2)
He has convinced His disciples that He is leaving.
He is trying to encourage them and prepare them.
“Do not let your heart be troubled.
Promise He would return
Way, Truth and life. No one comes to the father but through Him.
16 “I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may be with you forever;
17 that is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it does not see Him or know Him, but you know Him because He abides with you and will be in you.
Note on Helper later.
Spirit of truth------World / Cosmos (Moral order in rebellion against God)
John Patton at the airport.....
He abides with you and will be in you.
Jesus and the Holy Spirit are of the same nature.
John Porbeck’s son.
18 “I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.
19 “After a little while the world will no longer see Me, but you will see Me; because I live, you will live also.
20 “In that day you will know that I am in My Father, and you in Me, and I in you.
Who is You?
16: give YOU another Helper
be with YOU forever.
17: YOU know Him. abides with YOU.
18 not leave YOU. come to YOU.
19: You with see Me. You with live also
20: You will know. YOU in me, I in YOU.
THE DISCIPLES IN THE UPPER ROOM (can we infer that Jesus was talking His followers not in the Upper room?)
Can we infer that He was talking to US?
Overhear a conversation with my son
ex·e·ge·sis critical explanation or interpretation of a text, especially of scripture.
NOW for US.....
21 “He who has My commandments and keeps them is the one who loves Me; and he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and will disclose Myself to him.”
Not a gospel of Works…The works are proof of the condition.
26 For just as the body without the spirit is dead, so also faith without works is dead.
Love produces action.
The Other Judas
Last week we saw Philip and Thomas both ask dumb questions...
22 Judas (not Iscariot) said to Him, “Lord, what then has happened that You are going to disclose Yourself to us and not to the world?”
Deep Question:
Jews are God’s Chosen People.
5 ‘Now then, if you will indeed obey My voice and keep My covenant, then you shall be My own possession among all the peoples, for all the earth is Mine;
6 and you shall be to Me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.’ These are the words that you shall speak to the sons of Israel.”
About Jesus
6 He says, “It is too small a thing that You should be My Servant
To raise up the tribes of Jacob and to restore the preserved ones of Israel;
I will also make You a light of the nations
So that My salvation may reach to the end of the earth.”
So it is a legitimate question:
23 Jesus answered and said to him, “If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our abode with him.
24 “He who does not love Me does not keep My words; and the word which you hear is not Mine, but the Father’s who sent Me.
Does God love unsaved people.
Yes.
16 “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.
Mercy and Kindness providing a Way.
Does God love Christians more?
No....
Differently?
Special, unique way. Relationship with you.
25 “These things I have spoken to you while abiding with you.
26 “But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you.
NKJV: also Helper
NIV: Advocate
KJV: Comforter
AMP: Helper (But Counselor, Strengthener, Standby.)
Parakletos - Legal connotation. Someone that is a benefit in court. legal council, witness, advisor.
Where I think that the word Helper and comforter, or even advocate fall short, is that those words in modern context, give the impression that the Holy Spirit is somehow subservient to the person in whom they dwell.
You have NO power or sway over the HOLY SPIRIT.
You ignore the Holy Spirit at your own peril....
19 Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and that you are not your own?
28 “Truly I say to you, all sins shall be forgiven the sons of men, and whatever blasphemies they utter;
29 but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit never has forgiveness, but is guilty of an eternal sin”—
30 because they were saying, “He has an unclean spirit.”
The Gift of the Holy Spirit is not the OLD Spice variety pack your Grandpa gave you, to be thrown in a corner.
It is the enigma.
27 “Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Do not let your heart be troubled, nor let it be fearful.
28 “You heard that I said to you, ‘I go away, and I will come to you.’ If you loved Me, you would have rejoiced because I go to the Father, for the Father is greater than I.
29 “Now I have told you before it happens, so that when it happens, you may believe.
30 “I will not speak much more with you, for the ruler of the world is coming, and he has nothing in Me;
31 but so that the world may know that I love the Father, I do exactly as the Father commanded Me. Get up, let us go from here.
