Introduction

Many throughout history have been led astray from the true way to life. From false prophets and religious leaders in the Old Testament times, to the Pharisees and Sadducees of Jesus’ time, to people like Joel Oelsteen in modern day, many wolves in sheep’s clothing have arisen. John 10 has three parables that contrasts Jesus with the Pharisees as well as the “wolves in sheep’s clothing” that came before and have come since.

John 10:1-5 The Sheep Know the Voice of the True Shepherd

All three of these parables are a direct reference by Jesus to Old Testament text, particularly Ezekiel 34.
In Ezekiel 34 God tells His people He will lead them to the good pasture.
You will know the voice of Jesus, and He is the only way.
Jesus will lead you unerringly, others will lead you astray.

John 10:7-10 Jesus is the Door

Jesus is the only way into the sheepfold.
Furthermore, if you are in the sheepfold with Jesus, no thief or robber can pull you out of that sheepfold.
The thief of verse 10 is NOT Satan.

John 10:11-18 Jesus is the Good Shepherd

The hired hand will flee if trouble arises.
The good shepherd lays down his life for his sheep.
The other sheep in verse 16 are the Gentiles. Jesus came so that ALL may have life.
